In both, there's a sect of people controlled by another group by a drug for which they must regularly receive antidotes. One of the sect's leaders is trying to find a cure so their people can break free.

There's a similar betrayal done by the FL to protect the ML. In MM it's in the past rather than the present unlike in the TBW.
The supporting characters all play a very big and important part in the overall story.
The villain is a Deity that wants to take over the world.
