Yang Shi Nan é um garoto de 14 anos que passa por uma metamorfose sem perceber o que está acontecendo. Tudo começa em um dia normal de aula, quando ele sente fortes cólicas estomacais. Ao correr para o banheiro, ele percebe que sua urina está ficando vermelha como sangue. Levado a um médico, ele é diagnosticado com "Distúrbios do Desenvolvimento Sexual", ou intersexo. Sem consultá-lo, os pais de Shi Nan decidem se submeter a uma "cirurgia de redesignação sexual", transformando Shi Nan em uma menina e mudando seu nome para Yang Shi Lan. A família se muda para uma nova cidade para começar uma nova vida e tudo parece estar indo bem, já que Shi Lan se adapta e até faz amigos. Difficult, often ignored subject
This is probably the first movie with an intersex protagonist, even though intersexuality occurs in tens of millions people around the world. These people often undergo invasive surgeries without their consent and are deprived of any control over their bodies. How is it possible that we don't hear about this problem more often? Beats me. Hopefully, with movies like this one, the situation of intersex people will gradually improve.
