So I guess this novel takes place in the same universe, and yes the implication is that the timeline is much later - but very much affected by the events that took place in TTEOTM. Apparently having no gods and “devil god” disrupts the balance of the heavens.

So much for all the assumptions that destroying the Devil God etc would bring everlasting peace. Honestly, I always found the plot/world building pretty weak in TTEOTM. What was very well-handled was the cycle of karma and the human storylines surrounding karmic balance. But there were always too many poor plot devices for my liking (characters just “overhearing” absolutely crucial information, dues ex machina stuff, incredibly stupid orthodox sects that beggar belief (just to keep setting TTJ up to suffer), etc.)
