I wanted more romance. It tap,danced around

9/10 is my rating. This is a 2022 South Korean workplace romance drama with 16, 62-76 minute episodes.

First, I provide a unique synopsis then review. I provide the synopsis because I find, when I’m looking for a show to watch, some of the synopses do not describe the series very well. So, unique synopsis is intended to provide another perspective. If you aren’t interested in the synopsis scroll down, the review is labeled.

Synopsis

On Ma-eum (Kim Se-jeong) is ready to move on to other opportunities after being injured during her quest toward Olympic glory in Judo. When Ma-eum decides to chart another path pursuing her dream job as a webtoon editor, she must hide it from her Judo coach father On Gi-bong (Ko Chang-seok). Ma-eum’s father thought they were just waiting for the injury to heal so she could get back to Judo. Having put all of of her energy into getting the job of her dreams she is not about to return to Judi which had taken such a tremendous toll on her body. But Ma-eum is facing a tremendous challenge as a webtoon editor as she doesn’t have traditional qualifications. But the determined young woman is not about to give up on her dream that easy. Her career in Webtoon creation could be short-lived though because the branch she works for is part of a larger company that is about to eliminate the webtoon platform as it is losing money. She got her chance because the leader of the branch took a liking to Ma-eum when she worked security and was willing to take a chance on her as a trainee web editor. So it is unlikely if this branch goes down that she could get another job with another webtoon company. But, when she first starts out, the fact that Ma-eun is a super fan of webtoons means she has to scale herself back from fan girling on all of the clients/authors they work with. Her over enthusiasm at first causes her mentor, Seok Ji-hyung (Choi Daniel) to scold her to be more professional and leave her own interest out of her interactions. But what seems to be a weakness at first turns out to be a strength in that she understands the authors on a deeper level. In fact, Ma-eun’s particular fan girl mojo just might be what was needed to help save the webtoon branch. Ma-eun’s wins over all the other project managers and editors with her magnanimous, personality, and boundless energy. Goo Jun-yeong (Nam Yoon-su) was hired at the same time as Ma-eum with outstanding credentials and at first cannot understand how Ma-eun is so successful while he is struggling. That is until he himself starts to fall for her charms. Can one outstanding employee save the drowning webtoon branch? Will the two opposite in personality newbies find the other half in each other?

Review

I enjoyed this start to finish even though it was not fully what I expected. I thought it would be more focused on the romance with the Webtoon platform as a backdrop, but it is actually the other way around. In terms of slice of life, it does an above average job of that. You get a deep look at how Webtoon platforms identify, support, develop and manage the artists they work with. But, if you are after a romance, you will get some of it with this but not for those of us that want the happily ever after full suite. There is a love triangle. Lots of romantic tension. But I see where other reviewers said it is like they left it open for a second season on some of those plot points. I am glad I watched it, feel like I know more about the making of the sausage with Webtoons and would recommend it to others. I might watch it again but only if someone else had it on.

I liked learning more about the rigors in the Webtoon world. The artists do really become slaves to their art and are producing a product. My daughter is an award-winning artist and had dabbled with online comics. She had a lot of interest in her work, so I asked her why she did not more actively pursue that to make money. I thought she could enter some contests and see if she could get signed or whatever. She told me that it is basically an artist mill. That it becomes miserable for the artists. This helped me to see a little more what she was talking about. I could see where the art would lose its joy.

I know it's a cultural, but it really bothered me that that the other newbie, Jun-yeong blamed all of the long timer Webtoon colleagues at NEON for his sister's accidental death. Yes, they let her go when she was a contractor but when a business is basically ready to go bankrupt or get bought out, contract positions are always the first to go. They did not do anything unusual. The loose association was she was out on the road early because she no longer had the Webtoon job, but it is not fair to blame others for that accident. So, that was a little frustrating. But I find it to be frequent in Korean dramas so there must be something to that indirect blame.

They danced around the romance so much, as someone who is in need of romance, I found it frustrating. She seemed to have a lot of romantic tension with the Senior Editor (her superior). I am glad they did not go that route because there felt like a huge age gap just in terms of where they were at maturity wise in the scheme of life. But, he definitely liked her like that and wound up letting go when he realized how much PD Goo liked her and that she seemed to like him back (even though she was not admitting it to herself). Which is why the soft ending with them was so frustrating. He finally confessed and she is thinking about it and they just leave it there. It was a very soft, unfinished ending to their story.

There was also the assistant web artist who really was very good and with some guidance could likely have made it. But he quit after ten years, is still around helping everyone out, but they don't do anything to advance him. I was disappointed we didn't get to see him finally make it. He said he had another dream, but we didn't even get to know what that was.

Not Your Traditional K-Drama

This has become one of my favorite K-Dramas! It had comedy, drama, heart, etc. It is not heavy on romance at all (depending on the viewer, this might be good or bad I guess lol).

I personally found this K-Drama never boring. I was impressed with how much they fit into each episode. It never felt like they were putting in filler content. I ended up loving just about every character too. And the story was so heartwarming and inspiring. It's definitely one of those dramas that have me questioning my career path yet again lol.

My only complaint is that we don't really find out who the female lead ends up with! I was conflicted the whole time about who I wanted her with and got mixed signals. Finally, at the very end, one of the guys confesses but she says nothing! I had personally thought that though she cared about him, she had never considered that one specifically as a potential love interest honestly even if they did have good chemistry.

So, I would love a second season. It would be interesting to see them explore more into a romantic storyline while continuing to introduce us to new Webtoon artists and continue seeing the growth of the current artists and the PDs! I feel like there's so much potential.

Heartwarming and motivating

If you want to watch a light hearted drama, feeling like you aren't doing well and need motivation i recommend you this. This is not a energy shot steroid but a feel good drama, it may not excite you much but will definitely give comfort. As it is not a rom com but a workplace story their conversation and life lessons, experience is what made me watch this. They will teach you the value and need of humanity among us. The safe environment one need to grow and develop. I love every episode as I've binged till 10 episodes and waited for the next i didn't feel bored or unnecessary twists. The osts are sweet and beautiful. A little love story between leads is good and help one in developing character and change of heart.

Watch when bored

Its one of those feel good kdramas tbh. It didn't leave a strong mark on me after I finished and I honestly already forgot what the kdrama was about. It does get interesting at times but this is also one of those kdramas where you just have to have patience to get through. I didn't hate it though! I think the characters are very likeable and I like how romance didn't play a big part but it was still subtly there. If you're bored and just wanna start a kdrama for the sake of it then this is the one! Its not that hard to follow although you kinda forget what the plot is throughout it, and it ends with a sort of an open ending. You don't know if the main character ends up with the main lead or the second lead. I'm glad they left it like this!!

Static Plot and Characters

The first two episodes are honestly really exciting. It sets the tone of the show and shows a lot of potential for the directions it could take. However, I've watched over half the show by now and nothing has changed. Every episode essentially goes like this: one of their artists has a problem, they try and find a way to fix it, meanwhile evil director guy tries to get the webtoon team kicked out of the company because they're struggling to keep up sales. This fact, by the way, is one of the major issues in this webtoon and, yet, despite reaching episode 8 NO progress whatsoever has been made. I was hoping for a story like Search: WWW where they come up with ways to increase sales and become number one. However, this entire first half of the show was just a major drag and repeated complaining. Also basically all the characters except Ma Eum (female lead) and the annoying coworker are static and boring. They have no character development whatsoever, and the male lead (is he even the male lead at this point?) lacks any personality. Honestly getting ready to drop the show....

Light-hearted but meaningful and intresting drama.. definitely make your day better.

So I was so excited when I Heard that kim sejeong is coming with this new series.
And I'm watching it and have to say that I'm not disappointed..damn..so let's talk about why you should start watching this drama-

1• the --SCRIPT --
Script is very fresh yet so exciting. Every character have their own story. It's a female centred plot but not boring..they show every characters life so beautifully.
Romance plot is amazing.. both Ml and second ML are charming and have amazing chemistry with FL.
Side characters are nicely written.
Webtoon industry is so much more than we think... it's fun to watch how artists and their webtoon department employees face new problems each day but still do their best to make readers happy.

CHARACTERS ---
Om ma eum/FL(kim sejeong's character is just so amazing and it's fun to watch her dealing with everything happening around her.
She is someone who is very warm and bright just like a sun. Her quality is she never gives up and always gives her best . When she make up her mind nobody can stop her. she is so kind and always smile so brightly (just like sejeong herself) but she is very hardworking and strong minded girl.

ML is a handsome a handsome co-worker who is well qualified. He is someone who is not rude and always think before doing anything.. he is sensitive and tbh a very new kind of male lead in kdrama land..godd nowdays male lead's are setting bar so high..why they are so good ..huhh..

Second ML is someone with a special charm . He is a senior who never forget to help FL and always encourage her.. I like his character.. he is an amazing boss. His chemistry with FL is so good..

ACTING:-
Kim sejeong's is an amazing actress.. her past dramas proved that.. she proved herself as a good actress in school 2017, uncanny counter, business proposal etc.
As we all know she is a CHEMISTRY queen.. her chemistry with ML, second ML and everyone in the drama isso good and fun to watch.
Her laugh is addictive and her versatility is no joke.. over-all sejeong didn't disappoint me at all.

Other cast is doing amazing job too..there are so many senior actors too so you can understand how good this drama is.

Final points:-
•Plot is superb.. hooked with 1st episode. And it's getting more and more exciting.
•this drama is light-hearted but writers doing great job showing difficulties of webtoon industry.
•Acting is on point.. nobody is doing over.. and supportive cast is nice too.
• it's fun tow watch' a gold medalist turn into a webtoon producer and doing her job as a newbie and facing daily probelms and solving them.
•comedy is on point..you will definitely don't feel bored at all.
•bg music is nice

Lost

I wanted to like this series. I loved the lead actress in business proposal. She’s perky and always portrays positivity. But the story is, I’m afraid, going nowhere. The characters arks are not developed enough. We still don’t know anything about the ML and we are already mid way through. He’s indecisive about his life and about what to do. Big deal… I think he could have been a little bit stronger. Not too strong as to geopardise the gender swap comedy scenes which I particularly enjoy. I find him flat without any real personality.
The supporting cast is so so as well apart from the annoying coworker who really is doing a great job at getting on my nerves. Even On Ma Eum’s boss is too flat a character.
It could have been a bit more powerful I think.
The webtoon industry is depicted as ruthless and that’s what I found interesting.
I’ll continue to watch but without much conviction …

Inspirational

I have seen many web series but this web series was one of emotional and filled with inspiration.everyone in life wants to achieve some thing and the one who is weak could become strong and one who is strong could become stronger by watching this Web toon i wish and i also expect season 2 of this series hoping for best to all the crew members of this team .love u guys keep going fighting ....... And this is one of most important series of my life too as this series i would like to be strong and coming back to episode i thought i lead role will end up with Romans but it was cute and simple proposal we expect the answer form the pd om but the series ended without the answer made us little disappointed but i think the direction could think of the season 2 of today's Web toon so we look forward to see the series as soon as possible.i wish good luck to hole crew and success with their future projects love u guys keep fighting .............

Stand Up For Woman

I really loved this drama. The female lead was strong and not perfect. As humans we make mistake but her heart was to do her best. This is the Korean version of "Sleeper Hit" from Japan, which is also on VIKI. I enjoy this version better because it went a little slower to understand each episode and what was going on. The 2 male leads where very supportive of the female lead and it was great to see that even in a company you can get support and not just challenges from the male side. Romance was not really a thing in this drama. The little we have is dry and not really emotional. I also liked the issues that it brings out about the artist of the comic draw of their experience in life and how they determine and see the world. The actors were great in their performance and I enjoy the story.

Almost perfect !

The main plot, for thoses who don't appreciate this drama, is the webtoon team and family : how to face, deal and actually create and published webtoons. The background is rich and subtile, with all the aspect of what we can expect froma a series about creation and artistics thematics. Fortunatly the love story plot didn't slow down to much the main subject.
I am fond of dramas wich can make you discover a world, and as an artist, i appreciate a lot the way this production has deal with creation, doubts, dreams and run aways. Specially the "peeve weapon" creator and all his madness in order to save his life by drawing. It's the only weak point for me, dealing with creation and madness means to be helped with a therapist. Most dramas let us believe that you can heal only with accomplished dreams and love but it's not totally true. With deap traumatisms, art will give you the energy to heal but a good therapy is needed to drive the energy of healing to sucess.
I love the redactors role which can help creators and how both imagination and economics aspects have to mix to became a hit. The dialogues are good and profond and the frequent quotes makes me want to read webtoons now :) The cast is well done and the suspense is vivid till the end about who will be the male lead, lmao. It's a dream team and almost the whole heroes team is a little bit to much humanist and kind but it's so good to see that it still exist on earth, in 2022, even in a fiction.
Happy to have watched this and follow the next works of the screenwriter of this drama :)

Very moving and has great characters

I originally started this just because I wanted to see actor Nam Yoon Su in a main role in the hopes that he will end up with whoever his love interest was. I quickly became invested in the story itself and loved the characters for their own personality, flaws and growth. It was very satisfying to see the character development and I liked how much they delve into the lives of the side characters so that their experiences are really fleshed out. It was fun to see the challenges that artists face along with those that support them. It was extremely satisfying to watch, I did not expect to love it as much as I did. It really makes you think about pursuing dreams and balancing that with reality. I liked that some characters did not have their original dream realized and moved on to a new dream. I think it’s important to recognize that sometimes things just don’t work out and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
