Spoilers ahead..read at your own risk:
In ep1 ML is killing the peasant who asks for grain and attacks him...thisnis witnessed by FL from her carriage...he threatens her with his blood stained sword, and breaks some pearl ornament she is wearing..I didn't think much about it in ep1..but now in ep where SML comes to propose with eastern pearls, seems like that was deliberate choice by director in ep1

I saw a lot comments questioning if ML recognizes FL and vice versa. He's not talking about about their earlier encounter here, but the far past. It appears that the FL doesn't realize it's him though.
I don’t think he knows she is the young girl from the past. In EP 1, ~20min, he comments “who are you exactly?”, as she walks away from him w/ her horse. I think he actually is talking about their more recent earlier encounter, rather than the distant past…though that is just my take on this. 😅

I wish a Chinese or someone well versed in Chinese literature can explain them, but so far Google says this:

That makes me think he knows she is his childhood friend embarking on her revenge journey.

I remember this, but thought that he was referring to her plan to get revenge having found out that her mother was forced out of the Xie residence and had been brought up by Granny Chen. It is a good point though. I need to re-watch the episodes to make sure I’m not missing anything. I see now that everything was moving quickly and sometimes the subtitles flash by too quickly. I forget, when they were kids and XQY’s mom was still alive, did XQY go by Chen Yunya or did she get that name when she started living with Granny Chen? Up to this point, I don’t think they’ve revealed how XQY ended up with Granny Chen, except in the beginning where it seemed like Grandma Xie had purposefully sent XQY there? Anyways, it’s clear I need to rewatch!! lol 🤣 (note that I’m actually looking forward to re-watching while i wait for the new episodes!)

The timeline shows that he finds out/knows it when he says those lines:
At ~20min, he is suspicious and says that line.
After that, his subordinate is giving him the details about the investigation into who she is.
He reveals her schemes to enter the Xie household and implies she has many more secrets and schemes buried knowing more than he should.
I think we can draw the conclusion that he knew from this point on.
