What The F-ck, also ignore the last five minutes?

This is the most unhinged movie I have ever seen, nothing about it made sense for the first hour and still many of the interactions were weird. It felt like we were a bystander and you see 2 people that know each other talk about something between them, but for a whole movie. I dont really know how to rate this movie but I will just put some of my thoughts here.

A married school teacher gets raped by a guy in a pig mask. Three months later, he is still traumatized by the event and gets followed by 2 guys, one of them being a guy called Kai. The teacher thinks its the guys that raped him, and he gets followed and teased with more and more. Eventually, he loses his job and his wife, and his mental state is a wreck. He lives randomly just like everyone in the shit town.

SPOILERS

Turns out, the teacher was not raped by Kai, but by an older man who is the boss of the shit town. The connection and why he "protects and gives money" is confusing but whatever. It is nice that some of the questions the viewer has were answered, but it is still obvious that this movie is open to interpretation in many areas.

Kai probably kept an eye out for the teacher because Kai liked him since he was a child. He surveyed the teachers trauma responses and helped him face his trauma. Still, he ruined the life of the teacher, so it felt quite meaningless in my eyes. Kai acted mostly self-indulgent in my opinion. One thing i dont get is why did the big boss man decide to rape the teacher? I see the connection with the teacher and Kai but not the with the boss.

As for the ending, it was cool that the teacher ended up burning the boss man alive, and then made love with Kai. It was a fcked up story, but at least there is some sort of happy ending. Until the boss man (i think? his face was covered probably from the hospital but idk) kllled the teacher and he lies dead naked in the forest. Bruh. What even is this story. Kai manages to escape and god knows what he is thinking and plans to do with his life.

I dont know how to recommend this movie. Its somewhat of an interesting watch but super confusing and does not deserve a re watch in my opinion. Still, the acting was great and I recommend it if you like darker themes in general. Respectfully, I prefer soft and fluffy BLs (this one is not even a BL), and will be enjoying them instead.

Lurking in the dark is but a story of LOVE and TRAGEDY

I don't really know where to start but let me start this review by saying, "this movie was beautifully and wonderfully sewed in the dark"

The beginning of the movie bears lots of promises. A promise of a wild yet perfect cinematography, a promise to touch your innocence with an invitation to enjoy the darkness and a promise of a BL story. Because for all I know if not all there's someone who decided to watch this movie because of the BL ingredient on it.

Anyways let's go down to the business...

MUSICALITY. Obviously as what the title implies this movie will surely involves singing or music in general. For those who enjoys rap, free speech composition with a raw touch of feeling and emotions surely this movie is for you. You'll come to appreciate the unbounded power of music but for those who are not into such kind of genre you'll surely find yourself trying to understand and enjoy it. For me, I'll give it a pass. I'm not so fond of rap but I love writing thus the compositions strike me the most in those scenes than the rap.

CINEMATOGRAPHY. The movie is more likely produced with an indie film touch on it which contains the raw beauty of reality. The color grading is true to its natural form. The settings, location are well thought of except the forest scene. That's the last place for me to do such act. 😉

CASTING. The main leads nailed it all. Their roles are really suitable to their visuals, get up and background. The main leads are drop dead gorgeous especially sensie. I would fall for him if I were there for sure. They're just too perfect.

STORY. This made the movie worth a penny. The storyline. The movie tackled issues that do not usually happen but do happen and how someone's life could change because of it. The story of survival, slavery - on a different level, story of motivations, inspirations and brotherhood. In all honesty I could say lots of good things about the movie when it comes to the story because for me this is the cream of the crop of this film.

BL? Uhmmm. It depends on how you see BL. If you see BL as a lovey dovey story of both men then this movie is not BL. If you see BL as love between both men regardless of how the story goes and ended well this could be BL. So it is really up to you.

NOT SO FAVOURITE PARTS. I don't like the scene before it ended. Don't really like such ending because the story started dark. I do understand that the story mirrors the cruel reality of our world but I'm this kind of person who see films, movies and dramas as an escape to what I am used to. Thus, I don't fantasized such direction for the finale other than that some parts are quite acceptable.

This is but a great movie. 🙂

perfect ending :)

I don't really understand why this movie is so poorly rated.

Yes, it deals with the dark side, yes, the ending is how it is, yes it keeps you on the edge and yes, it's worth every minute.

It's about trauma, and love, and healing, and some more trauma. Please watch it with an open mind and appreciate its beauty (acting, cinematography, story).

I give it a 10 for rewatchable value, but I'm a fool for this kind of stories

PS: for me, was the perfect ending; it couldn't have been any other way.

rapping is a form of expression

It can be confusing on how you feel especially with no support aiding you in that process.

There was serious character growth for the teacher as he experienced trauma that destroyed most people in life and yet comes out better for it. It made me cry that he died right after he realised his love for Kai. He found a great friend from shota as he was comfortable with him and actually gave him some love advice.

Kai I felt was always rooting for the teacher as he wanted him to express his feelings from the start taking blame for a terrible act no one should have to face. At face value it seems he is uneducated and naive but he understands the world better than most people

Not really a BL but rather a strong, raw and brutal psychological story with a lot of trauma

This movie is very difficult to describe: it is about a very traumatic event happening to a school teacher as his life falls literally into pieces. It is raw, brutal and violent in addition of featuring a community of outcasts and a darker side of the Japanese society. It confronts the viewer to the ugliness of the reality of dealing with abusers and how it is difficult to receive proper help to heal as well as to find justice and peace. In term of story, I was pretty impressed by the choices made by the screenwriter. Pacing could have been a bit better, especially toward the ending.

The acting was good overall: especially regarding the two main characters. I would have expected maybe a bit more from the secondary casting who did ok but where in some case it could have been stronger (especially when comparing with what the main leads were providing). Even at the level of the two main male leads, it could have been even stronger but they did a very good job given the raw scenes in which they were acting.

The music is pretty central in a way to the film. It is super interesting to see how poetry, language and then rap and music are used to deal with trauma and as part of the healing process. The filmmaking was great: it had an indie vibe totally fitting the scenario, with some camera movements giving an angsty vibe which brought me shivers.

I would recommend this to people looking for a strong psychological story with a thriller / dark side and involving very traumatic events happening to the characters. It is completely gripping and gut-wrenching. This film is full of triggers, shocking scenes and very graphic: be mindful and check the tags (or even maybe the spoils if you want to make sure this is a movie you will be able to digest).

An Ending That Feels Like It Was Just There To Shock You

I want to give a brief overview of this movie, because I did enjoy watching it, but there were a few key points that made it more difficult for me to watch:

Some points I liked:
- It shows an insight in how rape victims (try to) overcome the aftermath of being sexually assaulted. It feels painfully realistic, which makes this all the better. Do note that this can be triggering for some to watch, due to the storyline.
- This is one of the few instances where I can condone a teacher-student relationship, because the teacher had no idea the student was his student until the very end. It was very well made in that sense. No creeps in the main relationship.
- The storyline with the main character's wife is wrapped up in the end, when usually it is just left there to hang. It was nice seeing her again and that they parted amicably.
- The main actors acted incredibly well, especially considering Endo Kenshin (Kai) was 20-21 when this was made.
- The two main characters kiss well. I've seen a lot of kisses in dramas, both straight and gay, and these two actors kiss really well.
- Just in general; The two main characters had really good chemistry.

Some points I disliked:
- The ending. It alone made me take off half a point from my rating. As the headline suggests, I feel like it was more there to shock you than anything else. The ending didn't add any value to watching the movie. My suggestion: watch the movie until 1:50:25 and you won't be traumatised by nonsense.
- Jin assaults his wife, and it is not mentioned ever again.
- Jin basically ignores the fact that Kai did a background check on both him and his (ex-)wife after they get closer. It is barely an issue.
- A lot of the characters weren't very fleshed out. The only ones were the two main characters and even then I feel like Kai still has a lot of mysteries.
- For a movie that has rap as one of its key centre points, the rap in this movie was honestly subpar. Jin's rapping also felt more like slam poetry than rap.

not my cup of tea

i was thinking how to rate this one... eventually i followed my heart and rated it low
idk how to feel about it, its disturbing af, poor execution and terrible ending. i usually watch dark series and i dont mind dark stuff but this one i didnt like , it felt much depressing until the end and i didnt find any interest, the dark things thrown feel forced because what ending is this (probably added to the worst endings that can happen)
idk how i finished it and i have no plan to rewatch

wow.

never have I watched a bl that has made me use my brain this hard. maybe it's the source material but the writing and execution of parallels and hindsight (every time the connections between scenes clicked I was floored) was extremely well-done. love the rough style of filmmaking and also spectacular soundtrack choices.

this one's gonna stick with me for a long time, and I don't know if I like that.

I Want to See This Film

I ‘ve wanted to be able to see this film, since hearing about it, almost two years ago.

I refuse to watch on my phone, with ads, on Daily Motion or bilibili.

When will a major streaming service pick up this film?

I pay for three streaming services for Asian series & movies, so I’m highly disappointed that none of them have decided to air this film, for whatever reason.

I had to leave a rating in order to post this non-review, but I’m certain, from all I’ve heard & read that I will love it.

All the best gay films are, unfortunately, depressing, I’ve found.

Will simply never shut up about this movie.

Movie Tw: rape , child death !!

I love this movie with all my heart It shows raw reality and emotions. Again if you don't like seeing anything rape related don't watch the movie because that's how the story begins and forced underage activities as well. It's sad that the mc had to divorce his wife to keep her safe from who he thought was Kai and couldn't even tell her about what happened to him that night but I'm glad they stayed in touch though. Just a warning the end is heartbreaking and definitely unexpected. !ENDING SPOILER! He died before he even got to turn himself in.

P.s "go build that school"

Overall storyline is about a man that gets raped + loses his job and has no one to tell his story to and is actively getting threatened by a boy (that mc used to teach years ago) that owned up and said he did it just for us to find out that he really didn't do it later on. Eventually they get comfortable with the other and tell each other their life stories which ends up in them planning and attempting to "kill" the man behind it all. (It all : The rape, the killings and underage activities.)

An Messy, Chaotic And Pretty Violent Movie

Sing In Love was a messy, chaotic, and pretty violent movie. The movie has some sensitive themes that I will not say. Because I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone. But I will say this. The plot was questionable. The acting performances, music, and dialogue were raw. The actors and actresses acting were realistic. The s*xual scenes were intense. There were some violent scenes in the movie that were too much for me to handle, but I made it through those scenes, plus the whole movie. The movie was good, but I dislike the ending. The ending was sad and tragic. If you can't stomach a messy, chaotic, and pretty violent movie with a tragic ending, then don't watch it but if you can stomach a messy, chaotic, and pretty violent movie with a tragic ending, then watch it.
