Educational & Compelling Time Capsule
I’d never heard of the original drama before, so I find myself astounded by the depth of historical detail and emotions I’m feeling after watching this prequel. Having now read that the kind old grandfather, Choi Bool Am, was the original Inspector Park, I’m even more touched and impressed. As another comment stated, Lee Je Hoon’s Detective/Chief Park is a subdued version of his Taxi Driver character. But while elements were similar, he still made this role uniquely his own. The cases changed each episode, but the thread of his moral character as a police officer remained consistent, and you couldn’t help but root for him and his circle of friends and family.
I loved all the cameos from notable actors, in particular, Kim Min Jae who was quite convincingly awful. I enjoyed the leap back in time learning about what was happening in the post Korean War years, watching good old fashioned sleuthing, being amazed at how much change S Korea has achieved in a relatively short period of time, and what remain challenges to this day.
I too would have like another couple of episodes, and I’m not totally against another season, but I think the ending was bittersweet and poignant as it stands, and I hate the thought that the elder actor might not be here to participate. I highly recommend this homage to the elder originals, and for the quality of the drama in its own right.

I love everything but.....
The only thing I wish is if the old YeongHan is portrayed as happier than how it's currently being presentedI mean I understand if the funeral scene is meant to be sad, but I wish to see more smile/laughter in other scenes. I don't know, there's something about his look that is just sooooo sad. I mean, for a great life he has lived, i really wish to see a happy old man.
Plus, he looks like a totally different person than the younger version of YeongHan. Not just in looks, but in overall being. Perhaps, age has taken its toll on our young YeongHan :)
Besides that, I love the show very much, especially the part on the FL! When I first sense romance in the show, I'm like "you better not give me another cliche where the FL needs to be saved". Thanks God they know better than to do that and deliver us an FL role that we all love. Like, we can really see how she is the support pillar for YeongHan and has been helpful in many ways. I really love such portrayal of FL than the typical K drama tropes
The ending is extremely satisfying, especially when they did the last recap of all characters. The story is wrapped up very tightly and neatly. Well done
Of course, the acting, the story, and everything is great. I love that it's in 1958 and it gives us cases that is somewhat different from the modern day cases. That said, somehow there's a gloomy undertone throughout the show, despite some funny moments. Maybe, it's the nostalgic vibe of the 50s!?
The highlight for me? Lee Jee Hoon! Ngl, I'm here for him and he totally delivers! Brownie points? Seeing him in 50s trench coat is a look I never know I needed to see this lifetime and he's so dashing!!
Overally, I enjoyed it- I just wish it's a little funnier and. a little lighter in tone. But, that's more of personal preference than testament of the quality of show.
If you love a solid crime, action, detective show, with amazing cast, go for it. Every single team member of unit 1 is very lovable!

Was this review helpful to you?
