Worth Watching!

Since I have adopted - leave the details to others - I watch these dramas with a different eye. Now, it is simply - Was it worth my time? For this - yes.

My only gripe is the everyone gets a happy ending. The mother should be in jail. She made life miserable and ruined so many people over the years. She used them and abused her status to get what she wanted. A bow and a "sorry" should never cut it. Awful woman.

The twists to the plot were well placed and the clues were there though, many of us would need to really pay attention to the details. You will grow frustrated and use the fast forward button - like I did - mainly to get away from the hell the mother put everyone through. There should have been mention of a house or, huge check for the teacher but, no - flowers, blue skies and all smiles by the last episode. Ugh.

Where is that Korean truck in almost every drama that runs someone over?

Lesson in Love (TW Drama) (2023)

Thought i'm open minded when it comes to relationships but this really tested me!

Likes
1. The drama was addicting because the topic is taboo and there were a lot of twists along the way. The first 6 eps weren't easy to watch and I wasnt sure why I was still watching. Ep 7-9 made me feel uneasy coz i thought although it's not a crime to fall in love, it felt too inappropriate for the teacher to fall in love with a hs student. Couldnt they have waited until he graduated before they started anything? Ep 10-12 added a stalker storyline to already stressful events.
2. It's tough to like the couple, Mengyun and Yixiang given the circumstances. But i admire them for fighting for what they want. I also didnt feel any passion in all their steamy scenes because I look at the guy and all I see is him wearing his hs uniform in every scene, reminding us that he is still a boy. But his father telling his son that he was ok with the relationship also made me think.
3. I really hated the mom at the start but in the end, i liked her even more than the FL. She had the most growth in the drama. Still doesnt excuse all the bad things she did and i understood she tried to protect her son from an adult trying to get her revenge and hurt her son.

Dislikes
1. The way Mengyun was written. From the start her decisions and actions have been terrible. We dont always know what she is thinking or feeling because she has one expression. What did she like about Yixiang? I really cant imagine, but hey she seems happy so be it. But she should have resigned even before it became public because it was really unethical.
2. The whole stalker thing was unnecessary and obvious but they didnt figure it out because they were too busy with themselves. Also i didnt like that the ending was written in a way that they're forced to forgive or sweep everything under the rug after the stalker. I think without it, the mom would still be fighting with her son and Mengyun, which I think is more realistic than showing all is well after 6 years.

Questionable, Uncomfortable, Yet Surprisingly Watchable

An age-gap romance between a teacher and her student doesn't exactly sound comfortable when you first hear about it. I actually tried to pass on this drama several times, but the poster and title kept intriguing me. Eventually, I thought, why not? At worst, I could always drop it. Somehow, I ended up finishing it.

This is definitely not a drama that will make you feel warm and fuzzy. If anything, it makes you question the characters, their choices, the dynamics between them, and even your own feelings about what you're watching. The drama does try to justify the leads' actions, but I personally wasn't convinced by it.

The ML is 17, almost 18, and still in high school. He's rebellious and constantly gets into trouble, partly to spite his wealthy and controlling mother, who has a lot of influence over the school. Then we have the FL, a 30-year-old new teacher who becomes involved in his life. From the very beginning, the age gap and teacher-student dynamic made the romance uncomfortable for me.

The first few episodes were especially difficult to watch. The ML clearly develops feelings for her, while she initially tries to maintain boundaries but slowly develops feelings herself. It isn't presented as something overtly inappropriate at first, but watching a teacher gradually become romantically involved with her student was still extremely uncomfortable.

And as someone who has been a teacher myself, my teacher mode was working overtime while watching this drama. I usually try to ignore unrealistic school details for the sake of entertainment, but here there were so many things that kept pulling me out of the story.

The bullying storyline was one of my biggest problems. I really dislike dramas where bullying is a major part of the plot, and this one was especially difficult for me to sit through. The private-school parent association setup also felt very fake and forced, mainly existing to give the ML's mother power and influence over the school.

The school itself never really felt like an actual school to me, and the teachers didn't behave in ways that felt believable. The FL's professionalism was another major issue. She repeatedly behaved in ways that I found difficult to respect, and because this is supposed to be a romance, I needed to at least understand or connect with the leads. Unfortunately, I never really did.

The ML also felt very one-dimensional to me. His rebellious behaviour is established early, but I never felt that the character developed enough beyond that. I kept waiting for more depth and complexity, but most of the time he remained the same difficult teenager.

The drama also seems confused about what it actually wants to be. Is it a romance? A crime mystery? A revenge story? It tries to be all three, but the combination doesn't always work. The romance was easily the weakest part for me. I didn't feel the chemistry, emotional connection, tension, or spark between the leads that would make me understand why they were drawn to each other.

Interestingly, I thought the FL's revenge storyline was much more successful. The mystery surrounding her past was kept hidden reasonably well, and I didn't see everything coming. The stalker storyline, on the other hand, was pretty obvious to me from the beginning.

There are also quite a few disturbing twists throughout the drama. Some were predictable, others genuinely surprised me, but many of them left me feeling uncomfortable rather than emotionally invested.

That said, I can't say I hated watching it. I was entertained enough to keep pressing the next episode button, and the story did manage to surprise me at least once. So despite all my problems with it, I still finished it.

Overall, I'd call this an average watch that didn't quite deliver on its potential*. It raises some interesting questions about boundaries, morality, relationships, and how people justify their choices, but the romance didn't work for me, the school setting felt unrealistic, and too many character decisions were difficult to accept.

If you're curious about it, I'd say give it a try and decide for yourself. If the teacher-student dynamic makes you uncomfortable, though, there's absolutely no need to force yourself through it. Just be prepared for a drama that will probably make you uncomfortable more often than it makes you swoon.

Disturbing yet oddly entertaining

This lesson in tabus is most probably not a drama that will make you swoon or fall in love with pretty much any of it´s characters. Even if you are like me who has a soft spot for bad-boys gone devoted (obsessed) and soft. As it is there constantly offering disturbing twists some more predictable than others yet indeed very disturbing in so many ways.

It also offers a bunch of issues done wrong oh so wrong and has me questioning the writers motives for this drama.

That said I was entertained, the story did surprise me more than once as well as made me reach for that next episode button so all in all a decent watch. Just prepare yourself to feel uncomfortable. Or at least I did

no better no worse revenge/school drama

I can see a lot of wasted potential here... It's got a lot of ingredients to keep this entertaining, but also it's got a lot of tropes, and not all of them done right!
I read a lot abt episode 6 & the turnover it brings. Indeed, there is something to it, but its aftermath not good enough if you ask me. Like someone said, two narratives are stuck together in an artificial way, as if the director received too many complaints from viewers for the story being boring and decided to add some action to it!
So, its a (student - teacher) romance + revenge (?) drama after all, and - hopefully - love wins and revenge is forgotten by the end.
Abt cast: i really think the weak spot is the FL, not the ML as many viewers said. The FL is really boring for wearing the same outfit and same facial expression all the time. While the ML is quite in the character, and though he might look more mature - which i didnt notice - it's not unusual for teens to look so. I've seen teens looking old and adults looking like teens, so this is not a concern for me while watching this.
My objection is to the plot itself, logic seems sometimes gone to the drain while cheap tropes keep recurring... Like, good ppl are in fact the creepy ones and vice-versa? Smh

If you miss a second, you'll miss the whole plot

The plot is full of mystery and secrets. Once you find the truth, the plot will get more interesting and engaging.

It's a teacher-student love story they said. But it's more than that. It's a friendship, parenthood, and also sometimes a thriller psycopath story mixed in a drama.

The biggest mistake is falling in love. Love comes with consequences and we should pay it someday, if it's not today.

I'm not recommending this drama for whose heart are weak. It content fake incest relationship so be prepared for the whole facts.

The love triangle, the betrayal, and the acting of the actors got me hooked. I watched this less than 24 hours without getting bored once.

Prepare your heart then watch it wisely!

Turn off your brain

my first ever review.

what i like:
1. chemistry
2. the way the scenes were shot and how it shows on screen
3. some decent acting
4. the overflowing emotions
5. interesting makjang
6. not boring
7. imperfect characters. morally grey, morally red. red flag. green flag. Mysterious character (xia yuxin), annoying character (the mom).
8. the pace, the amount of eps, and duration of each eps

what i dislike:
1. some of the logic and reasoning (i just ignore it, bcos I don't treat this as an educational material, just a pure entertainment drama).
2. sometimes ekkkk acting


overall a 8.5/10. it's definitely not perfect in any way. so many questionable morals, but heck as a makjang and rom, it is entertaining. ok that's it :)

This felt so Forbidden in its Rightness!

I saw some shorts on youtube and was really intrigued especially since it involves one of my fave guilty pleasure tropes which is the forbidden aspect of student-teacher romance. And i do not mean when Male is the teacher and the student female, i mean when its the opposite. So much more sexier (hehe).

Tiffany Hsu really brought out the complex, broken and tortured soul of Meng Yun alive on-screen, whose family was ripped apart by a betrayal and the tragedy thereafter. She is kind to people and dedicated as a teacher, instantly despising YiXiang when she meets him for the first time. There is a sensual undertone in mids of their hostile encounters where YiXiang tries to break her will (as he has done to many other teachers) and YiXiang cannot undermine the thought of viewing her as a beautiful mysterious woman. His great heart got stolen by her, and he falls so hard for her.

Its the first time i have seen Edward Chen on-screen and oh my what a terrific actor! He is handsome in a very manly way. Loved his brash and energetic persona, the way he protects the people he cares about, his fearless way of pursuing MengYun, with his heart & soul bare on his sleeve, for her to shatter whenever she wants to by his heartfull permission.

Not as bad as you might think

First few episodes might have you cringing.. typical spoilt rich boy acting up and pulling pranks on this new female teacher. But somehow in the process, he falls in love w her.

Our ML is 17yo going on 18, still in high school. He’s doing all these rebellious acts to spite his mom, who is the chairwoman of the parents association in the school. The mom of course is super rich, donated loads to the school and abused her power with the school principal. Enters our FL, who is a new teacher at the school, and she’s 30 yo.

The first 5 episodes were questionable : HE was obviously crushing hard on her, but SHE was gracefully holding back, but slowly falling for him as well. It wasn’t anything pedophilia but it was difficult to watch the budding romance between teacher and student. Thankfully, the explicit scenes at this stage were merely a fragment of his imagination ;)

Then comes Epi 6 with a huge plot twist, which made the story turn quite interesting. Here the drama and angst intensifies, and emotions are running wild. I must say I didn’t really like our ML’s acting. He seemed wayyyy too childish to handle a relationship w a much older woman. As the story unfolds, it gets more gripping and more and more plot twists, especially the final episode! Never saw that coming! It is a happy ending for our main couple, and somehow by the end, their relationship doesn’t seem so “wrong” anymore.

Watch this with an open mind. Yes definitely there were some steamy scenes, though it seemed a little forced lol. Bear in mind this is a Taiwanese drama ;) and good thing it’s only 12 episodes :):)

Lots to like but ultimately failed to convince

There was so much to like in this drama, the performances were good, the script was tight and the characters well drawn. The plot really held your interest and it managed some good twists, even if you could see some of them coming. But right at the heart of it was a major flaw as far as I was concerned, that undermined the whole thing. And no, it wasn’t the perceived immorality of forbidden love.

The fact that Edward Chen makes such an excellent job of being an immature, bratty teenager and the writing for him is spot on, makes the romantic relationship all the more difficult to understand and believe. I simply couldn’t credit that the character of the FL would be at all interested in him as a lover. Their relationship simply did not gel for me and I had to just suck it up and move on.

Plus, it’s really hard to get past the unprofessional attitude of the FL in the drama. She behaves so badly, so often, that I ended up really not liking or respecting her at all. I don’t have to like the characters to rate the show, but when it’s a romance, it’s sort of necessary to at least warm to the lead couple.

What my rating means: 7+ A watchable drama, but nothing exceptional. Good enough to qualify for the race, but finished with the pack. The sort of thing that promises more than it delivers.
