I get the distinct feeling that ML had feelings for FL in high school. He has said things like, "that's the girl I remember," when she said she won't be give up easily while under investigation. At the end of this episode 2, she said, "Love is not a must in marriage. Comfort and stability also matter." ML pauses just a little too long before agreeing with her. I'm guessing love plays a huge part for him and already exists. Just my intuition at play.
EDIT: Aaah - just watched the black and white high school flashback and I feel even more certain I was right, plus he still has the red umbrella after these years.
