For me, the central message of Shadow Punisher is that good and evil cannot be neatly separated. The boundaries between victim and perpetrator, legitimate power and injustice, and resistance and oppression are more complex than a simple black-and-white distinction would suggest.

1. Victims can become perpetrators. The injustice people have suffered may explain their actions, but it does not justify them.

2. Legitimate power can also produce injustice. Reasons of state, political stability, and the supposed common good do not justify the means used to achieve them.

3. Resistance can also become unjust. Those who fight an unjust order can reproduce precisely the structures they seek to overcome through manipulation, coercion, and violence.

Neither the preservation of power nor revenge can bring lasting peace to a society. An order based on deception, fear, and hidden interests, one that turns people into puppets, remains unstable. A sustainable order, by contrast, requires the rule of law to replace arbitrariness. Four conditions are essential to achieving this:

• Understanding: It must become clear who is pulling the strings and how people's perception of reality is being manipulated.

• Responsibility: Neither good intentions nor supposedly higher goals absolve individuals of responsibility for their actions.

• Justice: Injustice cannot be eliminated by replacing it with new injustice.

• Renewal: It is not enough to eliminate individual masterminds. The social and political structures themselves must be changed so that the mechanisms of manipulation and abuse of power cannot continue to reassert themselves.

The puppet motif expresses a central aspect of the story: people become pawns when others determine how they perceive reality, restrict their ability to act, and exploit them for their own purposes. A just order must enable people to break free from this role. At the same time, it must prevent new manipulators from simply taking control.

Li Si (Zhou Yan) is the character who most firmly advocates uncovering the truth and pursuing justice. He seeks to expose crimes, unmask those responsible for the events, and bring to light the truth concealed behind deception and manipulation. His actions are not primarily driven by personal vengeance or the pursuit of power, but by his determination to uphold law and justice.

His stance takes on particular significance in the context of the puppet motif. Li Si himself has been a victim of political intrigues and the conflicting interests of others. Yet he refuses to be reduced to a pawn in other people's power struggles. He develops his own standard of right and justice and seeks to help others break out of the cycle of manipulation, injustice, and revenge.

In this way, Li Si represents the antithesis of a world in which people are controlled, exploited as tools, and sacrificed for the goals of others. He counters the concealment of truth with exposure, the exercise of power without accountability with the identification of those responsible, and arbitrariness with the pursuit of a just order.

The decisive question, therefore, is not simply who ultimately holds power or who emerges victorious from the conflict. What matters is whether the mechanisms that turn people into victims and allow victims to become perpetrators can be broken. Only when those responsible are held accountable and the conditions that allow injustice to recur are also changed can the struggle against an unjust order truly become a path toward greater justice.
