Episode Title: Shakotan Edition
Rui Yoshida, the bar poet, takes his 8th tour of Hokkaido's port towns! To the Shakotan Peninsula in summer! Cape Shakotan in Hokkaido faces the Sea of Japan. Surrounded by the "Shakotan blue" that stretches from the coast to the horizon and into the sky, bar poet Rui Yoshida wanders around in search of delicious sake and snacks. He will be accompanied by HBC announcer Kanako Muroya. There were many wonderful encounters this time as well.
Shakotan's speciality during this season is "sea urchin donburi" (sea urchin bowl). There were lines of people waiting for their turn to eat at all the restaurants, but we found a guest house that served sea urchin donburi by reservation only. The sea urchin bowl came with a miso soup with fresh seafood, boiled Tsubu (a type of whelk), hokke (a type of fish cut into small pieces), tsukudani (a type of fish boiled in soy sauce and sweet sake), and even sashimi of sweet shrimp, which is in season. At 2,400 yen per person, the two were very satisfied.
Having satisfied their appetites with the seasonal delicacies, Rui headed to a hot spring where he could enjoy the view of Shakotan. Was this the place for Ana Muroya's bathing report? But, what...it was actually Rui! Will the naked bar poet be able to blend in with the spectacular view of Shakotan introduced with aerial photography...?
The "Bikuni Fire Festival" heralds the arrival of full-blown summer in Shakotan, and the two of them also go out in yukata, wandering around the stalls and having a drink at an izakaya. They were treated to not only fresh seafood caught off the coast of Shakotan but also "stewed zangi," a dish that originated from the restaurant's makanai (food prepared at the table). As usual, the impromptu " drinking friendship party" was a lot of fun.
The two then headed back to the festival site. The climax of the festival was the "Tengu no hi-kuguri". The fantastic finale, which unfolded amidst the flames floating in the dark night, was well worth seeing. Rui and Ana Muroya were so moved by the performance that they composed a haiku with all their might!
