Splendid indeed
Really loved Gu Jinzhao, so smart and sensible. She had a good head on her shoulders. The way she handled Ye Xian and how they became great friends and how she protected and took care of Lan even after everything that happened was really admirable. Little emperor was also a delight to watch. Could a kid really mature and become wise that fast? 😅 Loved Ye Xian's story and character. He made a lot of people cry. Although the ending wasn't that satisfying and felt like they jumped from one scene to another, it was forgiveable considering how good the story and characters were.Was this review helpful to you?
It was indeed “ A Splendid Match”
The whole point of this drama was the “splendid match” between a young, feisty, intelligent girl forced to grow up too quickly and an older man who is calm, clever, and incredibly cunning. The drama gave us exactly what it said it would from the title.From the romance and masterful plotting to the epic battle scenes and the young, brilliant emperor, everything was amazing. This is officially my favorite drama after The Untamed. It’s been a long time since I connected this deeply with a drama.
I have rewatched it so many times, I love every minute of it, I love YeXian character, WINWINs acting blew me away especially towards the end when he owned his character. Oh Cisha expressions on his face was just perfect. I am a sucker for people that act with their eyes, you can see pain, joy, sadness just from looking at their faces and for someone that was playing a calmer man, he nailed his role. That was a 100/10.
Overall the drama gave me what I wanted entertainment, I was entertained and that is all that matters.

The story follows a feisty young woman, Gu Jin Zhao, from her coming-of-age ceremony at 15 through navigating marriage prospects and her relationship with Chen Yan Yun, a powerful man who will become her husband.
In many ways they’re opposites — Jin Zhao is headstrong and quick-tempered, and Yan Yun is often gentle and mild-mannered. Both are highly intelligent and have a strong sense of justice. But the tension and spark that one might expect from their contrasting personalities never materializes, and this lack of chemistry makes it hard to feel invested in their relationship.
Instead, the highlight for me was the character arc of Ye Xian, the second male lead. I felt his character was more complex and undergoes a more emotionally compelling journey of hardship and growth than that of the leads. He’s undoubtedly a flawed character — immature, prone to anger and even violence — but nevertheless sincere and unwavering in his feelings, even when he fails to express them in a healthy way. For a character to convincingly display both hateful behavior and heartbreaking grief, pain, and disappointment takes a talented actor, and Dong Si Cheng (“Winwin”) delivers the emotional intensity in spades. I was thoroughly impressed and drawn in by his memorable and layered performance as Ye Xian.
While I appreciated the healthy, mutually supportive relationship between the leads, their dynamic didn’t have as much impact and emotional resonance as some of the friendships and even rivalries depicted in the series — not exactly what I’m looking for in a romance drama. Aside from the lackluster chemistry of the main couple, hard-to-follow political plots and an abrupt ending made this historical drama a bit disappointing in its writing and execution.

A splendid show
Let me start this off by saying I never would've watched this show if it wasn't for Winwin, but I'm so glad I did. This show was incredible! Easily one of my favorite historicals I've watched! I loved everything about it! The characters, the acting, the costumes, the sets, and the story. It was 40 almost hour-long episodes, and I still wanted more after it was done!Starting with the story, it kept me hooked the entire show. Whether it was focused on the love story or the other plotlines, I loved it! I loved getting to see how the characters changed over the few years of the series. My two complaints are I wish it was a little clearer how much time was passing between each event and the finale had a little bit more after the fire, but it's okay. I loved that it ended with a war as well. So much of the show, especially with Fu Hai Lian, was leading up to that so I thought it was fitting that it ended that way.

Our main 3:
Gu Jin Zhao: An absolute baddie!! I was in love with her the whole show. She's so smart, so brave, kind, beautiful, and really pushed the boundaries of what women were able to do back then. I loved getting to see her develop friendships and go through different things over the series. I understand why she had four or five men want her throughout the show. I loved her relationship with Chen Yan Yun so much. I loved getting to see them fall in love. I loved her relationship with Ye Xian too. They really relied on each other a lot and even when they had rough times together, they always came back to each other in the end. I adored her relationship with Qing Pu!! I loved how they interacted more as sisters or friends rather than master and servant. So sweet! Her giving Qing Pu freedom and property at the end too, omg love it! I could talk about Hin Zhao forever I loved her so much. Her actress Ren Min really had great chemistry with everyone as well!
Chen Yan Yun: He did frustrate me at some moments, but I loved him overall. I loved that he never strayed away from his morals and what he thought was right. I loved how smart and brave and dedicated he was. Seeing him fall in love with Jin Zhao was so sweet. I loved how down bad he was for her I'm not going to lie. I loved his relationship with Chen Yi as well. When he died you could see how bonded they were. I liked that his relationship with Ye Xian was always changing. They didn't like each other at times but also cared and respected each other at others and I loved seeing how it was always changing.
Ye Xian: After Jin Zhao, he was my favorite character (and I'm not just saying that because he's played by Winwin). Seeing his growth as a person over the show was so cool to see. He started as this bratty guy who used his name to get whatever he wants and ended the show a true hero and I loved getting to see that. Though I was heartbroken and cried over his death, I am happy he died with so many people who truly cared and loved him in his life. His deep love for Jin Zhao was so beautiful. It started out as just a little crush, but you could see how strong it became overtime, and it was so beautiful. I loved his relationship with Yan Yun like I mentioned before. His relationship with Xian Hui (I believe that's his servants name) was great as well and when he died, you could see how much of a bond they had.
Others:
Chen Yi: I loved him. He was such a good guy, and I cried when he died. He was a little silly sometimes too which was adorable.
Qing Pu: A baddie!! I loved her so much! Her and Jin Zhao were the perfect match together and I loved seeing how they were with each other.
Chen Xuan Qing: Oh how the might have fallen. He was one of my favorites in the show and then he became such a problem. I do think he got what he deserved in the end; I just hate that he got to that point. He could have been one of the great, but he got too obsessed with the wrong things.
Fu Hai Lian: Hated him and I'm glad the king constantly saw through his nonsense. I was very happy he died in the end. He was not a good man at all, but he did love his wife so I will give him that.
Gu Lan: There were definitely moments I didn't like her, especially in the beginning, but she grew to be a strong woman like her sister in the end. By the end, even though she wasn't in the show as much anymore, I really liked her character
The king: Loved him! He was so adorable! He actually was quite wise for his age as well. I loved seeing him on screen. His relationship with Ye Xian was so sweet too.
There are so many characters in this show, but I figured I'd just talk about a few that I really liked!
Overall, this show was just incredible to me. I loved every moment and I was interested in the story from start to finish. The romance was great and I loved that we saw it build overtime and none of it came out of nowhere. I loved all the relationships between people, romantic wise or not. There was enough conflict to keep the story going but not so much it felt like they were trying to just fill airtime. I wish there was more I loved it so much. The cast all did a great job too and again just have to give a shoutout to the costumes, hair, makeup, and sets!! So stunning! A perfect 10/10 for me!!

Can't anyone be original?
I saw a recommendation for this in the reviews for another show. So far it's pretty solid.But, I swear, if I see another drowning scene, I'm going to flip out. First of all, it's been overdone. Seems like 90% of old China dramas have a drowning scene. And it's never realistic. How are their hair and clothing dry, wrinkle free, and perfectly styled five minutes after coming out of the water? Why does the hero not remove his cape and shoes, both hazardous when attempting a rescue? Anyone can tell it's done on dry land and the "water" is added later.
And, of course, three or four men swoon over the FL. Also an overdone trope. Honestly, aren't we sick of the same 3 or 4 scenes considering recycled?
However, I was pleasantly surprised by the leads. I was unfamiliar with them. I especially enjoyed aren't Min, she's cute without being nauseating. I will be checking out her other work. Ci Asha in another great addition to my library of actors. These two are the reason i put up with the nonsense scenes.

Truly Splendid
"Splendid Match" really surprised me… in a good way, until it didn't. My main issue is that none of the love interests are true matches for the female lead; they're all flawed and doomed from the start. The romantic trope felt fresh at first, but quickly fell flat once I realized this. On top of that, the male lead's appearance and prune-like facial expressions distracted me, making it hard to stay engaged. I ended up not finishing the drama, especially since the fight scenes lost their appeal; suddenly, the male lead couldn't fight or keep himself or the female lead safe. Watching "Adventures of Zhan Zhao" right after only highlighted these problems more.Was this review helpful to you?
Amazingly funny
This is an amazing series. Every episode is intriguing and captivating, with humour. I had some difficulty following the political plot but still manage to enjoy every episode. All the characters are well developed and have their own lovely personalities.I love the humour, it is mixed in with the political plot and romantic story. True that 40 episodes is long and the last 10 episodes were more drama than a mix of comedy and drama.

If you love love, then you will like this a lot. If you want complex court drama, you will like the first three quarters. If you want a proper, well rounded ending, lol sorry.Dear Writers, your ending 5 minutes of the drama are just as important as the starting 5 minutes, if not more. Your viewers have invested so much of their time and emotions and then to be presented with sucha non-ending is a disgrace to them and to you. Cdramas usually fail at endings but this was a new low. Did you accidentally cut off the last few minutes? Did you forget your runtime? Have you gone crazy?
Kudos to Ren Min and Ci Sha for such an incredible chemistry. Good thing the drama is peppered with enough romance to make me give it a high rating so people don't avoid the drama but please please please learn to wrap up a story for god's sake!!!

Second male lead stole the limelight
Ep 27-28 killed me, I cried so many tears. As much as I love the main leads romance, I think I was more emotionally moved by Ye xians story, I usually hate second lead storylines but his was just sad, he truly is a character of despair, his storyline made me cry a lot. I see a lot of people hating on his character of being a man-child, but i think Gu Jinzhao said it best, when he was outside her window the night before she got married about what kind of guy he is. While she was the love of his life, he was her twin flame.The ending really could have been more, it felt like it was cut short, like maybe the main leads happy in their lives, or something a bit more satisfying to the bad guy ending, cause that was not satisfying, like that was it? The main leads romance was a quiet but mature kind of yearning and love, it's nice to see. A male lead full of nothing but green flags, a female lead strong headed but smart. The way they could understand each other and go through things together is the best kind of relationship to have.
The politics I didn't really care for in the story, it was the typical evil story of corrupt ministers, but him at the end was probably the only evil guy that wanted things to turn around, I see why they don't do that storyline more often, because it looks dumb, you did so many bad things and now you regret? Like at least be a more evil person or something, his wife too was loyal, he literally suffered through nothing, still in power even when he died, he didn't suffer, that's what I didn't like. But I will say I paid more attention than in the other dramas when it involves politics, probably because I wanted to see how the young emperor would go about it. He did well.
All in all solid drama, the ost in the later part really did a number on me, contributed to my cause of crying. Minus points for so much attention on the second male lead story because I almost feel as though he had as much screen time as the male lead, as much as I love the second male lead story, I'm here for the romance, the politics was alright nothing crazy. Would I recommend? Yea, why not.

The incompatibility between the female and male lead roles.
The Incompatibility of the Male and Female Leading CharactersThe series started off pretty well in terms of its plot. However, it gradually became problematic. While watching, I saw a man acting more like an older person lecturing a younger one than a couple who loved each other. His ability to love was problematic, his interest in the opposite sex was problematic, and in short, their compatibility was problematic. I couldn't watch any more. I couldn't understand what the screenwriter or the casting team who chose these actors were aiming for. I didn't like it. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Slow burn but good drama
While I don't write many reviews, this drama is one of only five that kept me hooked and interested in every episode. I appreciate the FL's strength, intelligence, and forgiving nature. I also admire the ML's ability to be both forceful yet tender towards his woman. The second ML was outstanding; despite his condition, he demonstrated immense willpower, though he sometimes appeared arrogant, refusing to succumb to his limitations. Any drama that makes me cry as deeply as the lead characters is a truly worthwhile watch.Was this review helpful to you?

Drama storico cinese dedito a un costante bilanciamento dell’equilibrio tra tenerezza e durezza. A visione conclusa, la sensazione è quella di aver assistito a qualcosa di imperfettamente umano, più che a un intrattenimento levigato e ad effetto.Il punto di forza assoluto è la coppia protagonista: Gu Jin Zhao e Chen Yan Yun sono due personaggi davvero credibili, ben caratterizzati e che vivono una matura e silenziosa costruzione della fiducia, fondata sul rispetto reciproco e non su conflitti forzati o gelosie esagerate. L’intelligenza di Jin Zhao non viene mai sbandierata, ma si dimostra con i fatti: nelle strategie politiche, nella gestione della reputazione e nel controllo delle emozioni. Chen Yan Yun è un uomo potente e solo, il cui dolore non è mai urlato ma trattenuto in silenzi e sguardi ancor più significativi, in una compostezza che ne fa uno dei personaggi maschili più complessi del genere. La scena in cui riceve la lettera di divorzio è uno dei momenti più intensi e toccanti dell’intero drama.
Ye Xian, il secondo protagonista maschile, è invece una figura dolorosa e crepuscolare: una vita, la sua, che sembra basata costantemente sul tempismo mancato di un puntuale e lieve ritardo, e la sua storia d’amore impossibile con Jin Zhao si trasforma in un lutto emotivo che il drama scolpisce giocando su immagini contrastanti, come il corteo nuziale che incrocia quello funebre. La relazione tra i due uomini rivali supera inoltre ogni cliché: pur amando la stessa donna, lavorano insieme per il paese e finiscono per rispettarsi profondamente, imbastendo un rapporto quasi fraterno.
Cast oserei dire azzeccato: Ren Min e Ci Sha – quasi coetanei sebbene i loro ruoli diano l’impressione di un divario anagrafico maggiore – offrono interpretazioni misurate e intense, supportate da una fotografia che non ammorbidisce i volti in una perfezione irreale, restituendo invece una gamma di texture e di ombre vere. Le svariate scene romantiche promuovono una buona chimica di coppia, sebbene il coinvolgimento non sia stato per me stellare, ma questo è un aspetto estremamente soggettivo. Nonostante ciò, ho davvero apprezzato la caratterizzazione di ambedue i protagonisti.
Il punto più debole è la struttura narrativa, specialmente nell’ultima parte. Intorno alla trentesima puntata la storia inizia a vacillare, gli eventi si accavallano in modo confuso e le sottotrame politiche perdono mordente, come se mancassero gli episodi necessari a chiudere il tutto dignitosamente. La fine riservata a un certo numero di personaggi, pur ragionevole per certi versi, sa comunque un po’ di soluzione di comodo: non mi entusiasmano mai né le redenzioni collettive né tanto meno le dipartite di massa, sono sempre misure quantitativamente sbilancianti, difficilmente lineari ma spesso utili a risolvere nodi diventati troppo ingarbugliati da sciogliere altrimenti. La conclusione, in particolar modo, è sbrigativa e insoddisfacente e lascia con più domande che risposte, sia rispetto alla risoluzione con le figure antagoniste che in merito al romance, sul quale il sipario cala bruscamente, dando più la sensazione di uno stacco pubblicitario che di un epilogo vero e proprio.
Punto di demerito per la colonna sonora, il cui investimento lascia alquanto a desiderare: i brani sono piatti e fin troppo generici, per un’opera che nelle immagini e nella recitazione risulta invece molto più ricca.
Al di là dei difetti resta però un drama che propone una riflessione interessante, matura e talvolta impietosa sui sistemi di potere che soffocano l’individuo, sulla solitudine del comando e sul prezzo altissimo da pagare per restare umani dentro macchine politiche spietate. Non è un gioiello perfetto, ma di certo un buon drama che merita tutto il tempo dedicatogli.
