The deposed emperor and his new role & confronting the past

Although an essential part to the story, I'm not a fan of the mask thing. I keep in mind that this is a fictitious story and don't overthink it. I've watched many wuxia / fantasy dramas all my life so this is not something that's too unusual. I think of it as something like people surviving after falling down a cliff, giving oxygen to another person underwater, going to sleep in full makeup waking up looking perfect and so on. The drama explains more about the 'science' part of this mask thing in a later episode. Love the part where the male lelead sees the evil uncle after so many years - excellent acting!

Nice

Emphasis on the vendetta is what transforms an ordinary story into an amazing drama. A vendetta gives the narrative a burning core, a personal reason that refuses to fade with time. It is not just about revenge, but about memory, pride, loss, and the need for justice as the character understands it. When a drama leans into vendetta, every action carries weight, every dialogue hides tension, and every silence feels dangerous. The audience is drawn into the emotional conflict, questioning whether revenge will heal or destroy the characters involved. Vendetta-driven drama thrives on moral ambiguity, forcing viewers to sympathize with flawed choices and painful decisions. It raises the stakes beyond simple good versus evil and explores how obsession can shape destiny. In the end, the emphasis on vendetta makes the drama unforgettable, because it mirrors real human emotions: anger, grief, loyalty, and the desperate desire to settle unfinished scores forever.

Definitely a strategist

To plan revenge for 10 years and carry it out to such an extent is something only someone with a single thought of vengeance would do. In this episode, we discover another side of Huai'an; he's brought back some of Cy's charisma.
