I can make a better horror story around a wet wipe

I've sat through some proper garbage horror, but at least those movies tried to explain where the damn spirits came from. This one just gave a sketchy ah grandma for that.
It's like the director looked at the script and said 'backstory? Flashbacks? Plot? Nah, too much work.' Half the movie is just random spooky shit happening with zero explanation and the rest is people dying.
The lead looks terrified of water but there is no explanation whatsoever. None of the characters had any character. From the first scene I knew all of them were dying in the most mid ways possible.
Easily one of the most personality-less horror movies I've ever seen. I have nothing to look forward to, but I really hope they explain stuff in the to be continued part.

Salmokji: Whispering Water (2026) emerged as one of the most disturbing and visually hypnotic experiences in recent South Korean cinema. Unlike the traditional "slasher" style, this film delves into psychological folk-horror, using local folklore to construct a narrative of guilt and paranoia.

Immersive Sound Design: As the title suggests, sound is a character in its own right. The "whisper" of the water is mixed in a way that makes it seem to come from behind the viewer, creating a constant feeling that someone is right there, invisible.
Atmospheric Horror: The director avoids cheap jump scares. The fear in Whispering Water comes from anticipation, the use of empty spaces, and the bluish, cold cinematography that conveys an almost palpable sense of dampness and mold.
Central Performance: The protagonist delivers a raw performance, especially in scenes where the line between reality and the delirium caused by exhaustion and guilt dissolves.Symbolism: The film is a brilliant metaphor for the subconscious. The drying reservoir represents the mind that can no longer contain repressed secrets. Aesthetics: The beauty of the drone footage over the submerged ruins contrasts terribly with the horror unfolding on land.
Slow pacing: The film is a slow burn. It takes time to build tension, focusing more on the psychological disintegration of the characters than on frenetic action. Ambiguous ending: Following the trend of new Korean horror, the ending doesn't give away all the answers, requiring the viewer to piece together the metaphorical puzzle.

Salmokji: Whispering Water (2026) is a masterpiece of modern horror. It proves that the genre still has room for innovation by blending ancient legends with contemporary anxieties about trauma and responsibility. It's a film that, like the waters of a reservoir, will linger in your mind long after the credits roll.

to be continued?

I was very excited to see this film as I am very keen on Lee Jong Won and Kim Jun Han and folklore based horrors.
Unfortunately, I left the screening quite disappointed. The actors delivered solid performances ,no complaints whatsoever. Especially, Kim Jun Han character was creepy and had this unsettling vibe surrounding him. I'm not going into much detail but the film was marred with red herrings, unimpressive water ghosts and chaotic and inconsistent writing-basically,lazy storytelling.
There were no rules, rituals or folklore based survival tactics. The film's world building was inconsistent, everything appeared to be an illusion after the sunset (and even before -another fallacy),just being in the close proximity guarantee your death. Having Gyo-sik's body already sitting in a real-world morgue in the hospital while his clone roamed the lake completely shattered the movie's timeline and violated the idea of the soul exchange according to the Korean folklore (escape from the lake is Mulgwishin Jakjeon (Water Ghost Tactic): they must actively lure, trick, or drag a living human down into the water to take their place). It was also very puzzling that the crew knew that the senior DP was missing after visiting the place, choose to ignore the reservoir bad lore and refused to implement any safety measures.
To think this film generated so much noise and hype doesn't inspire confidence, and it was commercialised more effectively than it was crafted. It was done well enough to make a stir and make so many people go to the theatre yet quality of film does not support it. My expectations were shattered.
There are some good jumpscares though, clever use of diegetic ambient noise and the atmospehere was thick and unsettling.I felt their terror, their ability to escape was non negotiable. Classic B-rated flick I would say, nothing novel ,no solutions or set rules to escape,no coherent narrative .They were simply doomed the moment they stepped into the lake/reservoir area and stayed after the sunset.
I am rating it 6.5/10 as the director abandoned consistent folklore logic for a generic, mindless "kill-them-all" doom and gloom ending. I think Exhuma deserves all the accolades as all events ,rituals, folklore and mythology behind it were very well researched and implemented. I understand that not everything should be logically explained in the horror genre but in the case of Salmokji it was kind of a let down.
'To be continued' gives me some hope that another film will explain the idea behind everything and gives some reason to the inconsistencies. It can be salvaged pretty well.

just okayish watch

Well, it's a good watch, that's it.
I feel like it's based on Rusalka (a Slavic folklore figure). She's described as the spirit of a young woman who died tragically, especially by drowning. If someone follows her... she lures them into the water.

When I started watching, it just felt okay-ish, and the ending was also just okay-ish. I don't know why horror shows keep doing open endings. If they're planning a second season, then sure, it makes sense. If not, I really don't get it.

That being said, I was never actually bored. It's a pretty good watch. It has that classic horror vibe people making the dumbest decisions imaginable, creepy atmosphere, eerie background music.

Honestly, it's not that scary. Half the horror comes from the sound effects doing all the heavy lifting. 😭 I wanna know why people in these types of movies are always so dumb 😭 while the main characters are somehow both terrified but super smart.

Overall, it's a fun watch if you're into supernatural horror. Nothing groundbreaking, but I don't regret watching it.

I actually liked it

Wow that was good and actually scary! Although the whole movie was predictable it was still a fun watch. Love me some horror. I don't like the "He's dead" plot line though. Felt cheap. Loved Da Ah and Jae Chan's role, been waiting to see them again a while.

it's a 5/10 but Da Ah and Jae Chan made it a 6/10

Disappointing and unnecessarily hard to understand.

This movie is basically just a thriller, not horror or even a mystery. You need to pay really close attention to what the characters say, otherwise you'll have no idea what's going on.

1. The movie only explains the reason the main character is scared of water one time. If you miss it, you'll probably never find out why.

2. The senior who shows up to help her only explains who he is about five minutes into the movie. So once again, if you weren't paying attention, you won't know who he is or why he's there until the last 15 minutes.

3. When it's revealed that the senior is actually dead, the main character decides to go into the forest by herself instead of telling her friends what's going on (and remember, she's terrified of water and doesn't even know the area). Like... what????

4. And then there's the old lady. Nobody thinks about her at any point after her first appearance. Not even the paranormal YouTuber, who somehow knows all about rituals and spiritual stuff, but when it comes to the stone monument, she suddenly has no clue about it. Very convenient for the plot.

5. The movie has several moments that are perfectly set up for a jump scare, but it completely fumbles every single one of them. There's a scene where they discover the senior is dead, and the camera zooms in on the protagonist while everything behind her is completely dark, only for half a face to appear and that's it. Then there's another scene where several heads emerge from the water and the manager (the older brother) gets startled, and when the specter finally appears, it doesn't make a sound. So the scare falls completely flat. Another time, the senior is placing stones on the monument, and when he turns around, he transforms into the specter and starts chasing them. Once again, it's a silent jump scare with no scream, no loud noise, nothing. And that's basically what happens every time the movie sets up a scare—they ruin it horribly.

6. Why does the water specter even exist? Well, once again, if you weren't paying attention, you'll never know, because it's only mentioned once. The pond was built on top of a cemetery. One of the staff members says this at one point and that's pretty much the only explanation you get. As for the old lady's daughter, you're basically left to figure it out yourself. All we know is that she died in the pond and now lures people into building those stone monuments.

7. And finally, it feels like the director just couldn't be bothered. There are basically no flashbacks to explain anything. We never see how the protagonist almost drowned. We don't know much about her relationship with the guy who comes looking for her. We learn almost nothing about the old lady's daughter or how the old lady ended up performing sacrifices. We never find out how the senior or his wife died either.

On top of that, the movie is completely inconsistent about how technology works. Sometimes phones and other devices work just fine, other times they don't. For example, we see the specter cut off phone calls at one point. If that's the case, then why doesn't it interrupt the call where the protagonist learns that the senior died in a hospital? The answer is simple: because the plot needed that information to get through. It's convenient for the movie, so it happens.

8. The ending is hard to understand for a lot of reasons, mainly because the ghost creates illusions, so you never really know if what you're seeing is real or not. Keeping that in mind, you can pretty much come up with whatever ending you want since everything could just be an illusion. For anyone who didn't get the ending, Gi Tae doesn't actually manage to save the main character when she drowns trying to grab the paddle. The ghost makes him think he saved her, then traps him in an illusion where they're back at work. It takes her appearance and tricks him into walking toward the water, which is what we see at the end. The whole movie was basically an illusion, including all the horror and fear.

good atmosphere for the horror and some unsettling based on real life urban legend

Overall this was an enjoyable psychological horror film. I quite liked the scares, they weren't the scariest but it does however thrives on mystery and uncertainty surrounding Salmokji. It's apparently also based around some real life urban stories surrounding the place and that's pretty cool. I like when they base thrillers/horror on urban legends it makes it so much more enjoyable and realistic in a sense. It also makes it feel more real even though none of this ever happened but it got that element of spooky where it's a fun watch. I watched this while it was completely dark out and no lights bc that is how horror should be enjoyed and it added so much more to the film. It definitely one I would rewatch at a later point with some of my friends if they were up for watching a horror film. But yes as mentioned It is not particularly frightening but it got some unsettling aspects to it since it's some urban legend sequel. What I loved about it especially is that it create an eerie atmosphere that keept me focused on the film and not loose focus, I tend to loose focus when I watch bad and poorly directed/poor jumpscares in horror.
So if I had to give an overall, id say that this is a good watch for those looking for a layered psychological experience.

I thought it would be scarier.

I expected the film to be scarier, but I wasn't disappointed at all. The story was engaging, and I really liked how the filmmakers deliberately left some things unexplained. That approach lets every viewer fill in the missing pieces with their own imagination, making the experience more personal. If you watch horror movies regularly, you might find this one a bit tame. I enjoy horror too, although I don't watch it often to protect my peace of mind. Overall, I really liked it and would definitely recommend it.

i guess this is a good watch for beginners ...

storyline was a bit confusing for me... i feel like there are parts that are important in the movie, but are not explained well, or the explanation was lacking. nevertheless, i really enjoyed the creative camera angles. i feel like it was able to give feelings of uneasiness and it somehow feels like u r in the scene. i dont think i have seen some of the camera angles in other horror movies, so it was very refreshing and interesting.

..and since this is a horror movie, i liked the timing of the jumpscares. they were not overdone nor it was underwhelming (..at least for me since i dont really like watching hardcore horror movies 😆). if u want a relatively easy watch horror film, then i guess u will like this one. some scenes were predictable, some were not but they knew how to build tension in those scenes. overall, it was good but hoped that it was longer...

spooky iffy water

Just a watchable movie. Nothing stood out, so if you're looking to watch something to pass the time, this would be it.
It's an easy plot and it's the typical movie where everyone disappears one by one. It has a couple jump scares that caught me off guard so it gets points for that.

Overall, this is an average horror movie that provides some entertainment but doesn't bring much new to the genre.
