Key to the Phoenix Heart
Warning - contains spoilers.
After ep 11 and 12 I think I have finally more or less pieced together Li Mao and Li Lejun's relationship to the imperial family.
The big hint is in Li Mao's name itself. As I posted earlier on:
Lǐ Mào/李茂 was clearly named with a sense of humor as it is a near homophone of límāo/狸猫 or civet cat. Of course that immediately brings to mind the Chinese idiom límāo huàn tài / 狸猫换太 or the crown prince replaced with a civet cat. Or more broadly it refers to an imposter. For those who watched TROP, Ning Yi's nickname for Fang Zhiwei was 小狸猫 or little civet cat/imposter. It originates from the story of how Emperor Renzong of Song was swapped out at birth by the empress.
In the context of KTTPH, Li Mao or Prince Qi is only a second or third rank prince bearing the imperial Li surname. The title Prince Qi has passed on to Li Mao, his fief is Qizhou which is not a rich fief, therefor he is from a relatively powerless branch of the imperial family. That is also why his sister Lejun is only a Xiànzhǔ/县主 (or a county/third rank princess). But according to Li Fuhua, he is the illegitimate son of the late emperor's Consort An and the Grand Tutor. The thing is, Consort An and the Grand Tutor did not dare to pass him off as a son of the late emperor. They instead swapped him out with the son of the late Prince Qi, Lejun's father. So Li Mao and Li Lejun were raised as true biological siblings and as far as they both know, that is what they are. It is also why the ED keeps referring to them as tóngbāo/同胞/biological siblings. It is only when their "parents" died that they were brought to the capital where they were more or less ignored by the current emperor and the ED. Li Mao is the civet cat that was swapped out with the late Prince Qi's son (maybe the baby was sickly and died) and now must earn his way up from the appointed position of Regent to Crown Prince.

If it really happened in the past, Huai Gui's ambition for the throne amazed me. He carefully planned every thing for a long time. I wonder what drive him to do that: revenge, dreaming of a better empire, or merely hunger for power.
Thank you. It was me who didn't get and asked for a good soul to explain me. 😁
But there was a Li Mao's flashback in front of the Cui mansion I'm still confused about. Who was the woman killed in front of the "Li siblings"? Was it Consort An or his "adoptive" mother. Why they were poor, is it bc that province was poor or they were poor afterwards, when brought to the capital? Why the tutor did nothing when they were brought?

The woman was Qi Wangfei (王妃) or Princess Consort Qi, their mother. She was given to the rebels, presumably to appease them. The Cui steward mentioned that Qizhou is no more, presumably its a county that rebelled or was conquered by enemies. They should have been brought to the capital after their county fell - they are after all a distant branch of the imperial family. The Royal Tutor presumably had something to do with it - he probably arranged for Li Mao to be his student.
Given the Cui steward's involvement with the disposing of Princess Consort Qi's body, I am going to guess Li Mao's "mother" was a Cui daughter. Interestingly Wuyi's mother the late Empress Wenxi was also a Cui daughter.

I think it may have something to do with the Lu and An family rebellion 25 years ago that he was asking the ED of Northern Qin about. They were noble families that committed treason and undermined the power of the nobles, something he is very concerned about.

That's interesting, thank you 😚

Li Mao's mother is Consort An. So An family in that rebellion could be Consort An's family, right? Interesting. I actually confuse why Huai Gui asks people from Northern Qin about that rebellion, and not people in Ye kingdom. And, then, I remember in the flashback, Liu Yu E (Empress Wen Xi's maid) talk about return to the old capital. I guess the old capital may be in the Northern Qin territory. That's why Wu Yi does every thing to secure the peace talks.

Yes I also think that the old capital is in lost territory and the Grand Tutor is interested in the Lu and An betrayal because of Consort An. I suspect they knew and loved each other before she entered the harem. The director said no character is completely good or evil in this drama. So the Grand Tutor is not just about power, I think he is motivated by an agenda that he believes is a bigger cause.

Isn't consort An from An family? I am making a guess from their surnames. If it's so then he must be planning revenge.

Yes Consort An is from the An family and based on the latest episodes I believe they may have been framed and he is out to clear their names.
