Family Matters Season 2

I understand that the actor from season 1 couldn’t or wouldn’t come back for season 2. Still, I thought the “father” character had so much unexplored backstory with Bae Doona’s character. From the cast description, it looks like they decided against recasting the character. I thought the actor did a fine job, but I wouldn’t have been disappointed at all if they recast. In fact, I think they should have recast. I am sorry to see the character get written out of the second season, more so than losing the original actor. I wonder how they will handle his character’s departure. Will they kill him off or will he just be off screen, so he has the potentially to come back, if they get a third season? I’m still excited for the second season, just a bit disappointed they didn’t just recast.

The answer is we just don't know what the creators are going to do about it. We will have to wait until season 2 arrives.

I think they may make him the spy inside the family, whether he did voluntarily, involuntarily or even wasn't aware of it. Remember the last scene of season 1 and the phone call. The FL (Bae Doona's character) was looking at her family and trying to understand who had been giving information to their former bosses all that time.

They might or might not have some different ideas how to play the mole storyline, but those circumstances would probably turn the father into the spy. It's kinda obivous way out. And then, if (if!) the actor comes back in season 3 (in case of another renewal) , they might make his character innocent, like, he didn't know and was under hypnosis and whatnot.

I guess I need to rewatch because I do not remember the mole storyline at all 😅. I read somewhere on MDL that they cast an “uncle” character. I assume he will replace the father figure character in the show. Still, I feel like the original “father” has so much unexplored backstory, I’m sad to see him go.

There hasn't been an exact storyline about the spy in the drama yet. But the creators did set it up to develop in the last scene. Everything seemed to be resolved, give or take, and then the FL got a phone call from the boss of that secret facility they had escaped from in the flashbacks. The boss said something in line "did you really think I never knew where all of you were and what you were doing?" Even their escape itself seemed to me a part of the bosses' grand plan, a part of some experiment maybe. As she was speaking to the female boss, the FL was looking at her family, like she realized somebody in the family had been a spy all this time. The creators didn't do anything more, because the season ended.

Could have they thought about someone else? Yes, maybe. I thought it was a "father-in-law." But now they can build the drama around the "father" being a spy.

We know he is pliable, and even his love to the "mother" is the mother's own manipulation/hypnosis/instillation to some, probably huge degree. She obviously had been living all those years with the idea he didn't actually love her and wasn't ready to sacrifice himself for her and their family, that's what she did to him with her abilities for her survival. And she kinda tortured herself for it, but also was condesdending and even a bit resentful to her husband. I thought it would be the main emotional twist of season 2: yes, she did it to him, she implanted the idea of his love to her in his head, but he loved her himself, he had loved her before, and it would be revealed and become an emotional climax of the season.

Now they could say someone else with the similar abilities programmed the future "father" to monitor the family, especially the FL, and report to their bosses. Or something like this. There are so many ways to do it.

Anyway, this is just my thoughts, I can be wrong.
