On October 21, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council held its regular press conference.

At the press conference, a reporter asked, "It is understood that mainland Chinese entertainer Zhang Ling He recently applied to travel to Taiwan to hold exchange activities, such as a fan meeting, but the [Taiwanese] Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities rejected his application. What is your comment on this?"

In response, Zhang Han, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said that exchanges involving mainland Chinese entertainers traveling to Taiwan for cultural activities are people-to-people interactions welcomed and anticipated by people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and help enhance mutual understanding between compatriots on both sides.

The mainland Chinese reports further stated that the DPP authorities, driven by political motives, have disregarded the wishes of the people on the island, particularly Taiwan's youth, and refused to approve visits by relevant mainland Chinese entertainers for exchanges in Taiwan, undermining cultural exchanges across the Taiwan Strait and running counter to the wishes of the vast majority of Taiwan compatriots. The Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council urged the DPP authorities to heed the shared desire of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to strengthen exchanges and interactions, abandon political manipulation, remove unreasonable restrictions, and facilitate cultural exchanges across the Taiwan Strait.

Recently, mainland Chinese TV dramas, including Pursuit of Jade, have gained immense popularity in Taiwan, and actor Zhang Ling He has been in the spotlight ever since.

The news comes amid tense China-Taiwan relations. China claims Taiwan as its territory and has not ruled out using force to bring it under its control, while Taiwan operates under its own constitution and democratically elected government. Behind the tensions is Taiwan's strategic importance in the global tech industry: TSMC reportedly produces over 90% of the world's most advanced semiconductor chips, essential for AI, smartphones, computing, and military technology.
