When Life Gives You Tangerines director shares his thoughts on why he chose to work on the Netflix series and what went into making it.

When Life Gives You Tangerines unfolds the story of the rebellious yet endearing Ae Soon (IU) and the diligent Gwan Sik (Park Bo Gum), as they navigate the seasons of life, facing challenges and trials along the way.

Known for his talent to capture the nuances of empathy and emotions, director Kim Won Suk (Misaeng: Incomplete LifeSignalArthdal Chronicles).

He commented, "I wanted this work to be both a tribute to the generations of our grandparents and parents who have lived fiercely and a song of encouragement for the generations of youth to come."

Expressing his hope that the series would break down walls of generation and gender discrimination, director Kim shared, "We put a lot of effort into everything — realistic yet beautiful cinematography, delicate acting, and music that touches the heart."

He also stated, "The historical backdrop of When Life Gives You Tangerines serves as a major dramatic element, presenting obstacles and challenges difficult for the characters to overcome. To capture this accurately, our art and technical teams poured their hearts [into every detail]." He heightened anticipation for the series, promising a visually rich experience.

Moreover, to vividly portray the changing times and characters' emotions over the period of 60 years, the team carefully selected period-appropriate songs, further enriching the storytelling of When Life Gives You Tangerines.

Writer Im Sang Choon, known for crafting rich narratives for each character while amplifying the charm of the actors who portray them, brings her signature storytelling style to this script. Director Kim said, "From the lovable and multidimensional characters to the dialogues — containing the writer's unique wit, humor — and heart-touching events —there wasn't just one thing that drew me in. I was captivated by everything." "I hope this becomes a drama that stays in people's hearts even as time passes."

When Life Gives You Tangerines will be released exclusively on Netflix on March 7.
