Tong Hua’s OS: If the twisted behavior of the main storyline wasn’t shown a bit more explicitly, I never expected so many people would enjoy this kind of “threesome” mental state (having one in the heart, biting on another — impressive, my Yao!).

The truth

Only if one is truly blind would they fail to see the “extremely high martial power,” right?

[Xiaoyao stretched out both hands, just about to receive the jade seal, when suddenly, from the sky came a series of urgent crane cries, as if someone were pounding at the gates, forcing their way in. Everyone looked up to the heavens in astonishment.

The Queen Mother was displeased and transmitted her voice outward:

“Today, Mount Jade does not receive outsiders. Who is so bold as to intrude upon this mountain?”

Her voice was like furious thunder, shaking everyone’s heads until they ached as if about to split.

Amid the vast clouds, amidst radiant and flowing light, a white crane gracefully descended. Standing upon the crane was a man in green robes—his form like drifting clouds, his bearing like the bright moon.

Zhuanxu’s expression changed drastically, and he could not help but take a few steps forward. Xiaoyao also suddenly stood up, her eyes wide, her body trembling uncontrollably.

The green-robed man leapt down from the white crane and landed before the sacrificial altar. He looked as though he had just recovered from a long illness—his complexion pale, his figure thin—yet his features were fine and handsome, his expression calm, his natural elegance and charm undeniable. Amidst the falling blossoms, he respectfully bowed to the Queen Mother:

“I am Tushan Jing of Qingqiu, come to take away my fiancée. I have already heard from the maidservants that Mount Jade is now holding the Queen Mother’s succession ceremony and does not receive outsiders. By propriety, I should have waited, but due to urgent circumstances, I was forced to intrude. I beg the Queen Mother’s forgiveness.”

The Queen Mother froze in shock, and asked in astonishment:

“Tushan Jing? You are not dead?”

“Oh my! 😱 The Great Squid King”

“Pretending to be a two-headed sea snake”

“Tong Hua is too talented, who else could have guessed this themselves?”

“🤣🤣🤣 Yes, we only know it ran away, but how it ran, only the author can explain.”

Right side:

“Did you see it?”

“I didn’t watch the drama, only saw your screenshot 😂”

“Then you understood it instantly”

“The octopus’s arms can regenerate”

The squid releases ink

Left:

The flamboyant cuttlefish not only can blend into its environment to hide itself,

but it can also communicate with its kind through color changes,

scare off enemies,

and even take on the appearance of other animals.

This mimic octopus spread out all its arms,

pretending to be a flounder.

That one,

baring its teeth and claws,

is pretending to be a highly venomous lionfish.

And this one

hides itself inside a hole.

Center:

Only stretches out two arms,

pretending to be a sea snake.

So it turns out that the mimic grass carp

is actually the world’s greatest actor.

Right:

If all its camouflage tricks are discovered,

it still has one final move to escape.

The squid will release ink to flee.

The ink cloud it releases

is about the same size as itself.

At the same time,

it will make itself instantly transparent

and escape in the opposite direction,

so that you can’t even see it.

Truth and lies alike are all for survival.

Octopuses have 9 brains

The octopus’s nervous system is very special. They have 8 accessory brains distributed along each of their arms. These accessory brains function like memory storage and are mainly responsible for memory. In addition, the octopus has a main brain located in its body cavity, which is responsible for thinking and coordinating behavior.

This nervous system structure gives each arm a certain ability to “think independently,” allowing it to react when in danger, and in some cases, even enabling arm-autotomy (letting an arm go to escape).

Regenerative ability

When an octopus’s arm is injured or lost, under suitable conditions, a new arm can regrow, restoring it to its original state. This regenerative ability is a highly coordinated, multi-level biological process involving stem cell mobilization, signaling pathway cooperation, epigenetic regulation, and energy metabolism adaptation.

Octopuses can become invisible and disguise themselves as “sea snakes”—all survival instincts of animals: to intimidate enemies and protect the secrets of their own bodies.

After releasing ink, the squid becomes transparent.

Do you think it evolved this ability

as a punishment,

or as a reward?

It’s just for survival, right?

Yes.

Being invisible itself is neither a punishment

nor a reward.

You mean I overanalyzed it.

“Dream of the Red Chamber,” Chapter 44

Lin Daiyu, upon seeing the play The Male Sacrifice, said to Baochai: “That Wang Shipeng really doesn’t understand much. No matter where the ritual is performed, it will surely end up by the river. As the saying goes, ‘Seeing an object brings thoughts of a person.’ All the waters in the world ultimately come from the same source. It doesn’t matter which water you scoop up and look at while crying—it allows one to grieve fully.”

These are translations of essays from different people found in a variety of places.  Some of it is objective or subjective analysis of the text or drama or Tong Hua posts, and others are speculation and others are, IMO, flights of fancy.  It isn't just one person's writings, so, it isn't consistent across posts.

Ah thank you, that is helpful.

And thank you  @AkuMau for sharing all this!

Yes, thank you AkuMau!

There's a ton of analysis of the novel in China, and the drama led to even more essays.  I like reading these, because they catch cultural and historical references that I am unaware of, or point out things I missed.  But of course, there's also stuff I don't agree with.  People have different takes. :)

2. The Letters of Longing Extras Released by TX

  1. At the end of the Rushou special video released after the broadcast of Season Two, Xiangliu’s death struck the audience hard. Ding Jiawen, the actor who played Rushou, posted the final Letter of Longing extra on his Weibo (and there’s no need to doubt it—it was definitely arranged by the production team for him to release). It clearly explained Xiangliu’s ending—he returned to Guifang (definitely as the revived clan leader of the Guifang, not Xiangliu sneaking back to Guifang like a deserter).

But this version was only in text. Since the actor’s Weibo was set to “visible for six months,” now everyone can only see the screenshots circulating online (I’ve pinned them in my top post).

2. The four-male-characters special after the end of Season 1.”

After the broadcast of Season One ended, the extra stories of the four male leads in Lost You Forever only included one, “Xiangliu’s Extra.” At that time, the author Tong Hua was still planning to write Qian Fang Xiang and continue with the sequel to Lost You Forever, so naturally, much of the characters’ backstories and endings would be explained later. But more than ten years have passed, the writing environment and mindset have both changed, and the original plans could not keep up with reality. Of the originally planned four-novel series “The Classic of Mountains and Seas Chronicle” (Shan Jing Hai Ji), only Once Promised and Lost You Forever have been completed so far—leaving behind many unresolved plot holes.

Fortunately, for the drama adaptation of Lost You Forever, the author personally took part, and under the existing conditions, the logic and spirit were presented in a way that most respected the original novel. To provide the audience with some additional clues, after Season One ended, the production released four extra video specials—letters of longing (Si Xiang Letters) from Cangxuan, Tushan Jing, Xiangliu, and Fenglong—which can be found on TX or a certain Dou platform.

Among these, the Letters of Longing extras were made in two versions: one paired with clips from the drama, and one without. The version I analyzed was the one paired with the original footage. It must be said that this version conveyed much more information—using the contents of the letters, combined with cinematic language and the drama’s visuals, it subtly revealed the true endings of the four male leads: Fenglong died in battle; Cangxuan gained the throne but lost Xiaoyao forever; Tushan Jing married Xiaoyao but died young; Xiangliu, after dying, was reborn and lived with Xiaoyao in Qingshui Town.

You can find my video analysis on my Dou account of the same name. It is important to emphasize: this is not an advertisement! The written versions are also included in the official Lost You Forever Setting Collection.

3. The Huichun Hall Extra Released by the Production(Drama)

  1. Huichun Hall Extra

On Yang Zi’s birthday, the production team released the Huichun Hall extra on a certain Dou platform, emphasizing the theme mentioned by the producer: “write one part, leave nine parts blank, and within that blankness lies the true essence.” That essence is—the flourishing of life, with “birthday” echoing the sentiment of “life.”

Since these are underlying themes deliberately left in the blank spaces, they are naturally not something ordinary viewers can easily grasp. So then, did Xiaoyao and Xiangliu have a child?

Filter implicitly contains some of Tong Hua’s explanations about Lost You Forever. Lin Yuan is the author’s spokesperson, and Lin Yuan drawing comics is precisely a form of hidden expression of Tong Hua’s own creation and writing.

1. Lin Yuan and President Gu Releasing the Fish

Lin Yuan said:
“Normally, I often eat fish myself, but after I finished this drawing, whether out of sentimentality or a sudden impulse, I just couldn’t accept it being eaten like that.”

Gu:
“You wanted the fish so you could release it? It’s already been released.”

Do you see it? This is a mermaid, a jiaoren ( merfolk). In Lost You Forever, the jiaoren couple is a symbolic reflection of Xiaoyao and Xiangliu.

So, what Tong Hua is telling the audience here is that although in her writing she often has to make characters die, in Xiangliu’s case—although his character setting dictates that he must live and die together with the righteous army—she still does not wish for Xiangliu to truly die completely. And that fish has already been released.

 AkuMau:
At the end of the Rushou special video released after the broadcast of Season Two,

WHAT????  There was a Beloved Ru Shou video after the end of Season 2???  Where???

So, the Letters are Longing are the ones you were asking about?  The one you were looking for with Tushan Jing?

 Kokuto:

I also don’t know whether that video really exists, or if it might just be a text. I will include the original text because I’m afraid of mistranslating it.

Yes, you’re right. The extra letter from Tushan Jing is exactly what I was looking for, and I happened to find it on YouTube. And there really was an inserted image of Xiaoyao when she was looking at Xiangliu/FFB.

“The political conspiracies of ‘showing one while concealing nine,’ hidden beneath the romance, need to be thoroughly uncovered and critically examined.”

Many people say the author doesn’t know how to write about power struggles. How could that be possible?

With such a skillfully crafted book that she managed to produce, do you really think she doesn’t understand political intrigue?

She deliberately made it clear that cangxuan is the male lead.

Not the official pairing, not the “true love,” but specifically cangxuan?

Isn’t this precisely telling us what kind of story this is?

It’s the chronicle of an emperor’s rise to the throne, a game of power and authority—how could there not be political intrigue?

Not only is there intrigue, but also blatant open schemes, and hidden, unspeakable plots.

Her purpose is nothing but to subtly tell everyone: this is the story of an emperor’s path to unifying the world. So stop focusing only on romance.

Go and study the schemes of power.

Although the thread of political intrigue is indeed subtle, between the lines there are clues everywhere, constant hints at it.

Is this really just a novel she’s writing? Isn’t it actually a reflection of reality?

Real reality, real power struggles—aren’t they exactly like the stories we see in this novel?

What you see before your eyes is only the surface, what others want you to see.

The real truth inside—if you truly want to understand it, you must look deeper.

Xiaoyao could break free from the cage, regain her freedom, and wait until the seal on the Zhuyan Flower was lifted—then she could change her face again, escape again. That was the true purpose for which she spent a hundred years maneuvering among different powers, putting on false appearances, and acting in countless plays.

It was all so that she could escape again and go live together with her nine-headed demon.

So, the King of Haoling was truly steady, precise, and ruthless. Right from the start, he directly sealed her Zhuyan Flower, making it impossible for her to escape. Truly, the older ginger is spicier—the snake was struck right at its seven-inch vital spot.

In the end, in the drama, the author didn’t even leave behind that flimsy cover from the book, which tried to disguise his hypocrisy and cruel schemes toward Xiaoyao.

It was made absolutely clear: it was Chichen who lifted the seal for his own daughter, the real father exhausting the last of his remaining spiritual power to fulfill his daughter’s desire for freedom.

Shaohao toward Anian vs. Shaohao toward Xiaoyao vs. Chichen toward Xiaoyao.

This difference between a real father and a stepfather—when you then look at how cold A Heng was toward Shaohao in the drama, it directly slapped the face of Shaohao, this hypocritical “kind father” stepdad.

The author personally delivered the blow in the end—a resounding slap, face stinging.

You are watching his cold attitude when taking the Zhuyan Flower. It should have been A Heng who unlocked the Zhuyan Flower for her own daughter, and she also guessed his intention.

Because he had just met A Heng, he must have remembered the promise he made to her. Treating her daughter in such a way, he should have felt guilty in his heart.

And when he saw A Heng together with Chichen again, he must have also felt unwillingness inside.

Xiaoyao acknowledged Chichen as her real father. With the protection of her real father and the scheming of her stepfather, when the two are compared, doesn’t it make him look all the more disgraceful?

At this very moment, he must also have felt rather ashamed.

I’ve always been thinking, if Xiangliu had taken Xiaoyao with him, the formation definitely wouldn’t have made Xiangliu feel uncomfortable. One would need to use spiritual power to protect the body in order to stay inside.

Compared with the drama, Chichen would definitely also protect her. As clever as Chichen is, why would he let Shaohao and Tushan Jing be inside the formation, yet they too had to use spiritual power to protect themselves?

One who sealed the Zhuyan Flower must have taken advantage of the other’s own daughter, while the other, who was not the beloved tied to the daughter through the Gu, was surely scheming and coercing the daughter.

The Lover’s Gu, ah. Chichen, as the leader and guardian deity of the Baili tribe—would he not understand what even A Heng could see through at a glance?

Look at how cold A Heng was toward Shaohao.
Apart from greeting him once at the beginning, did she ever really look at him again? Have you never wondered why?

She had already noticed Shaohao’s ruthlessness, his use and manipulation of her daughter. By ignoring him, by not giving him a single proper look, that was the best way to express her dissatisfaction. Otherwise, if he had truly helped her raise her daughter and taken good care of her, how could she not have deliberately expressed some gratitude?

And then, seeing Tushan Jing who followed along—he was not the beloved tied to her daughter by the Gu. As a real mother, could she not guess clearly what was truly going on in all of this?

Therefore, beneath the surface of the author’s words, much deeper meaning and hidden intentions are concealed.

From the hypocrisy and schemes of those in power, the King of Haoling was truly a master player of high-level strategy.

In Once Promised, it was always made clear—both openly and implicitly—that Haoling and Shaohao were full of cunning.

Without losing a single coin, he both gained the good reputation of a benevolent father, while suppressing, warning, and manipulating his foster daughter who could be exploited because she refused to obey and became his tool.

What a perfect deal—killing two birds with one stone, a profit with no cost at all.

Just make a proper comparison with how he treated Anian, and you’ll understand.

The better he was and the more attentive to his real daughter, the harsher and more hypocritical he was toward this cuckolded foster daughter.

So in the drama, they didn’t even leave him the last shred of a fig leaf to cover up. It was directly Chichen, the real father, who lifted the seal of the Zhuyan Flower.

The book left too much blank space—however you look at it, it was on the returning boat that he lifted the seal. The author blatantly exposed the hypocrisy of this so-called foster father.

Later, in Gouwei Alley, he even shamelessly questioned Xiaoyao, asking why she didn’t go to him for help when she ran into trouble.

I really wanted to snap at him: “Why? You say why? If she had even a bit of sense, would she dare? Where did you get the nerve to even ask this?”

If it weren’t for Xiangliu, who was truly capable, standing behind her, then at Merlin’s massacre, she would have long since been completely wiped out because of the scheme you were plotting to place your grandson in power.

Introduction :

"Flying Birds Return to Their Forests" from the Twelve Songs of Dream of the Red Chamber is the final piece in a suite of fourteen songs in the classic novel Dream of the Red Chamber by Qing dynasty writer Cao Xueqin. This suite appears in Chapter Five of the novel and tells the story of Jia Baoyu, who, in a dream within the Illusory Land of Grand Mist, is invited by the fairy Jing Xian to listen to twelve dancing girls perform live.

The first piece of the suite is the Prologue, and the final piece is Flying Birds Return to Their Forests. The twelve pieces in between each celebrate one of the “Twelve Beauties of Jinling” from the main roster, foreshadowing the fate of these twelve female characters.

This suite corresponds with the illustrated text and poetic judgments of the Twelve Beauties of Jinling, providing key insights for interpreting the characters’ experiences, the progression of the plot, and the decline of the four great families: Jia, Shi, Wang, and Xue.
