Summarizing the imperial family chart for anyone who is confused:

***First Generation:

1) Grand Princess: The emperor's aunt. Matriarch of the Yue family. Part of the Marquis of Anyang's Mansion. Mother of Yue Qiong.

2) Prince Yu: The emperor's only uncle. Married 11 women. Like drinking, gambling, and women. Scapegoated someone for embezzlement.

3) Empress Dowager: The emperor's mother. Was a Noble Consort when she had twins. Had to send one of the twins out of the palace as he was weak and it would be considered bad omen if he died in the palace. Mother of Yan Huai, Yan Han, and Yan Lin.

***Second Generation:

1) Emperor aka Yan Huai: Had a close relationship with the Empress. Has 3 sons (Prince Jin, Yan Che/The Crown Prince, Yan Qi/Prince Cheng) and 1 daughter (Yan Zhen). The current/fake Emperor is actually Yan Han.  The real Emperor, Yan Huai, was killed by him. His blooded related sons are Yan Li and Yan Sui.

2) Empress aka Zhao Shu Hua: Emperor's wife and mother of Yan Che/The Crown Prince and Yan Zhen. Helped the fake Emperor covered up the truth in order to ensure Yan Che can secure the throne. Hates the fake Emperor and seeks revenge. Later works with Yan Ze to stage a coup.

3) Noble Consort Su aka Feng Ling Su: One of Emperor's consorts. Mother of Yan Qi/Prince Cheng. Also knew the truth but kept up with her act to ensure Prince Cheng can become the Crown Prince.

4) Noble Jin: One of Emperor's consorts who was rumored to have been killed by Prince Jin. Killed by the fake Emperor due to discovering his true identity from his handwriting.

5) Prince Rui aka Yan Lin: The Emperor's brother. Father of Yan Chi. General of the Shuoxi Army. Rumored to have poisoned his wife due to her supposed infidelity which resulted in Yan Chi. Previous Emperor wanted to make him the Crown Prince, but he rejected it and moved to Shouxi. Killed by Prince Cheng's people, influenced by the fake Emperor, Yan Han. His wife was also killed by the fake Emperor years ago to hide the truth.

6) Prince Yi aka Yan Han: Originally a farmer's son who later enlisted with the military. He rose in ranks and later married Madam Yi, whose family staged a coup 20 years ago.  Father of Yan Li. Supposedly died from saving the Emperor during the coup. The Emperor was so moved that he granted Yan Han the honorary title "Prince Yi" in memory of his allegiance. His true identity was the imperial twin that was sent out of the palace. Took Yan Huai's identity to become the fake Emperor.

7) Prince Xin: The Emperor's half-brother. Borne from the previous Emperor and a concubine. Father of Yan Ze. Passed away after his wife, Princess Xin's death. Princess Xin was poisoned to death by the fake Emperor as she knows about his birthmark.

8) Yue Qiong: Marquis of Anyang. Related to the imperial family through his mother, the Grand Princess. Father of Yue Jia, Yue Qing, and Yue Ning. Later the adopted father of Qin Wan. Fought side by side with Prince Rui on the battlefields before.

***Third Generation:

Prince Jin: 1st Prince. Emperor's eldest son. Rumored to have committed suicide and that he attempted to rape and killed Consort Jin. His death is related to Shen Yi and the Shen family's death. Discovered the knife used to kill Consort Jin was the knife only the Emperor could use. Covered the crime to protect the stability of the court, told the truth to Shen Yi. Later poisoned by the fake Emperor.

Yan Che: 2nd Prince and also The Crown Prince. Emperor's son with the Empress. Beefing with Yan Qi. Later killed by Prince Cheng, a trap set by the fake Emperor.

Yan Ze: 3rd Prince. Son of Prince Xin. Been in good terms with Yan Chi and Yue Ning since childhood. Has vision problems. Poisoned when he was young and his mother, Princess Xin, also died from poison by the fake Emperor. Leader of the Heavenly Way Society and has been planning a coup against the fake Emperor.

Yan Qi: 4th Prince aka Prince Cheng. Emperor's son with Noble Consort Su. Has been trying to pit the emperor against Yan Che. Killed himself using Yan Chi's sword as that would equate Yan Chi breaking the law.

Yan Zhen: Royal Princess. The daughter of the Emperor and Empress.

Yan Chi: 7th Prince. Son of Prince Rui. Young Marshal of the Shouxi Army. Later entered the Ministry of Justice. Married Qin Wan/Shen Wan and later became the Regent to newly crowned Emperor Sui for a few years.

Yan Li: Son of Prince Yi. Gets along well with Yan Chi and dislikes self-righteous people. God son of the Emperor and was bestowed the imperial surname "Yan". He is an honorary heir of a prince so no one in the capital considers him as part of the royal family. His true identity is the fake Emperor's son, making him an actual Yan/noble blood.

Yan Sui: 9th prince. Emperor's son with Consort Jin who was supposedly killed by Prince Jin. Witnessed Consort Jin's murder and stopped speaking after Consort Jin passed away. Was pretending that he couldn't write and mute all along in order to protect his own life from the fake Emperor. Inherited the throne at the end to become the Emperor.

------Yue Family/distant relatives via the Grand Princess-----

Yue Jia: Yue Ning's oldest brother. Was supposed to marry Song Rou (headless bride) by the Emperor's decree.

Yue Qing: Yue Ning's second older brother. Has a crush on Qin Wan.

Princess Yongning: Yue Ning. Her father is the Marquis of Anyang and her grandmother is the Grand Princess.

Qin Wan/Shen Wan: Adopted by the Yue family as their foster child. Now considered the younger sister of Yue Jia, Yue Qing, and Yue Ning. However, she is still associated with the Qin family due to the name Qin Wan and "blood relations". Later granted the title 'Princess Yongci" due to her accomplishments. Later taught her forensic skills to students, married Yan Chi (who became a Regent for a few years to aid the newly crowned Emperor Sui), and made changes to the criminal code.

Thank you for this, cuz I keep getting confused. :'3

No problem! I will continue to update too as more of the Yan members show up!

Glad it is making it easier for people to understand! 😊

Thank you again! I keep coming back here. Without this, I would not enjoy the drama, because it is quite tangled.

You welcome! There are definitely more and more information/relationships being updated too per episode.

Can't agree on current emperor explanation  ..prince rui is not emperor in this drama...but I've no idea about the novel

Current emperor and Prince Rui are 2 different people and thus on separate lines. I just have nothing else to add for current emperor as he was mentioned but no explicit information yet.

Oh I understand now. Thank you for replying🖤👻

No problem! I added in numbers now just to make it clearer!

You’re a treasure, JJJ 👍

Thank You 🫶🫶🫶 I hit beg of ep 20 and needed this chart! Was confused when Prince Che and Officials were using both names in the same conversation. So didn’t  figure out that Prince Cheng was actually Yan Qi until I read your post…

No problem! And yeah, they dropped a lot of names in the recent episodes and very similar when written in English so totally understandable with the confusion!
