The following is my rough translation of Filter's music feature where composer Dong Dongdong talks about the creative process of composing for Filter. He has nothing but glowing praises for TJC's musical artistry.

Filter Music Feature

Hi everyone. I am Filter's original composer Dong Dongdong.

Filter is the most interesting drama that I have worked on. Its musical styles, character transformation has the most changes, including the character Tang Qi - his gentleness, his kindness, and his many misunderstandings with Su Chengcheng - which then took form in a total of eight songs. For example, after coming into possession of a bracelet, Su Chengcheng transformed into a great beauty Su Miao, turned into an alpaca, turned into a female professor, turned into a man. Such a fantastical setting does not exist in other dramas, and there was a lot of changes in its musical styles. These songs would only appear in each of their different situations.

During Su Chengcheng's recollections of Tang Qi - actually Tang Qi was her Prince Charming after all. From young, she had a very innocent crush on him - so Teacher Chen Xi wrote the song and lyrics for "Up and Down". This is a recurring theme in the entire drama. The first time it played is during the flashbacks to their youth.

At the beginning of Ep3 during Su Miao's dazzling entrance, we played "拽姐 Badass Queen", looking at all the common masses from Su Miao's perspective, since she is actually Su Chengcheng. "You are prejudiced based on appearance, so now I let you see how breathtaking I am". Therefore, when composing this song, it is often plot-driven, so we tailor-made this "Badass Queen" for her. 

By Ep8, at the time I was travelling in France with Teacher Chen Xi. As I was walking along the streets, I suddenly thought what other drama could have incorporated such an adorable alpaca in their story. I said, shouldn't we grab this opportunity to write a song for the alpaca? Of course, TJC is truly a multi-faceted TJC. You have to sing adorably, as well as incorporate alpaca dad vibes as you sing. When a child's voice and TJC sang this song together, you will feel that this is a song with family feels. 

Let us now talk about TJC's second song, which is also the main theme for this drama, called "好好告别 Say Goodbye Properly". What Teacher Chen Xi's lyrics intend to convey is since one must part, one needs to say goodbye properly, so that in the future, our memories still something to say. We did not lose this love because we fell in love with someone else. Rather, this love never began so let it end at the point where it was the most beautiful yearning, the perfect instant. As such, the song "Say Goodbye Properly" came to be.

The third track we composed for TJC perfectly encapsulates the screenwriter's core vision from the outset. Actually, Filter’s central motif—"傲慢与偏见 Pride and Prejudice"—is rendered through a Bossa Nova arrangement, crafting an easy-listening soundscape that resonates with emotional warmth. This piece scores romantic moments when there are sparks in their love, to when they were in the school, those kind of emotions. What I find TJC most incredible is his chameleonic artistry—his performance of all three stylistically divergent songs is totally unique, even adopting distinct vocal timbres for each. As a result, you feel that these there is effortless synergy in these three songs.

Later, during their first kiss, we need a song with a new vibe to distinguish from the sweetness and schooldays -  actually a more happy... a song that makes everyone even more joyful. So we wrote "心跳跳 情多多 Racing Hearts, Overflowing Emotions". Then I got Yu Jiayun to sing this song because the tone of his voice is very R&B; what you can hear is the groove of R&B. His performance is very relaxed, so this song is perhaps a pleasant surprise for everyone.

Background Music

The first time Tang Qi appeared was at a tennis court. I wanted to use Double Stride, this kind of electronic music with hard-hitting beats, so that with his movement, you will feel he is like a young tennis player in what he does. 

When creating Su Chengcheng's signature music - she had trained in Wing Chun from young; wherever she goes, she would stand up against injustice; she is a girl who knows martial arts. So during the music conceptualization stage, I used a lot of traditional musical elements such as Chinese drums, "Hey! Ha!" cries, Beijing opera percussion instruments to match her unyielding character.

In Ep1, the soul of this drama makes its appearance, which is she is about to transform. This piece of music is different from all the music that had played earlier in Ep1 - there is a aura of fantasy to it. Fantasy, danger, with a hint of Medieval Europe - this kind of musical combination - including vocals.

In Ep2, Su Chengcheng has discovered the secret of the bracelet. As she tried different skins, you must constantly use musical styles and continuously incorporate them in step with the madness of the scenes. The music has to constantly evolve.

I think the hardest part is Ep7, because the music has to match up fully with Su Miao's faked death, multiple methods of faking death, all kinds of ways of dying. As such, all musical styles are featured here - from the beginning when the three women make their appearance like 007, Mission:Impossible, up to when she sought death by fireworks, being bitten by insects, up to being struck by lightning - there is humour, tension, cool vibes. Also, in the end when she was struck by lightning.

The most interesting scene in Ep15 is when Su Chengcheng transformed into Quan Shengtang and had a tennis match with Tang Qi. At first, I wondered whether the music should be so scene-stealing, but this drama gave me enough leeway so I added all the elements I could use into it. There is also all strong, pulsating beats in there, as well as rock beat, and the suona playing the main motif at the end - that air of victory, of pride - which can only be captured by what I feel is the most awesome Chinese instrument - the suona. 

So what I gain most from this drama is that it gave me a width berth for creativity because its plot is diverse enough, unconventional enough. As such, the music can be very exaggerated, very extreme.
