Here, this is the novel's link, use Google translator to read 😊
it sounds like the show is loosely based on the novel. the novel is based on real historical figures and everyone dies at the end. I'm like 80% confident this will not be how the show ends.

Or not... It's hard to get a happy ending ... It's old times.. relationships between the same sex can't be accepted.. especially between the royals

I'm so sick of this argument that same sex relationships weren't publicly accepted and therefore how could historical fiction possibly have a happy ending. do you think gay people existed in misery every second of their lives until the past couple decades? there were gay couples who lived happily in secret. there's literally records of this. and also homophobia is largely a product of colonization. also this is historical fiction so the writers can do whatever they want and it's coming from a country that has heavily censored queer media for nearly a decade now so I think there's a good chance they would want to give the two of them a happy ending.
ALSO they're literally wearing wedding robes in this promo photo. I guess the show could pull a Go Princess Go and kill them after the wedding, but the fact that the writers are giving them that makes me think they will get their HEA.
Same sex relationships were a real thing in ancient China. Emperors had same sex lovers, I know that atleast one had a male concubine. It was also en vogue for young noble men to have male lovers and at one point in time nobles having male and female concubines was common. There was a diety of homosexual relations at one point. That in and of itself says something. This went on for a long period of time. It was just followed by centuries where it was condemned.
Chinese history is long and has undergone numerous changes between ruling parties, religions, and customs. Just like with all other countries, when looking back at history, many things are shoved into the shadows unless you dig deep.
