This episode felt so warm to me.

If I could go back a bit to EP 5 and 6, they've showed how Manami and Taiga are often separated by barriers; both literally and figuratively. Both times, they've tried their hardest to reach the other, but they always pulled back at the critical moments. When they were separated by the school gate on EP 5, Taiga attempted to climb it to join Manami on the other side. And yet, he didn't push through with it. When he held Manami's hand, Manami was reeled in and didn't let go immediately. And yet, she eventually did. On EP 6, when they were separated by the train gate, Taiga imagined jumping over it to reach Manami. And yet, he turned away. On the other hand, Manami looked back at him despite promising not to, hoping he was still there. And yet, she never tried to call out to him.

So why are they acting like this?

Well... maybe because of the biggest barrier of all.

As said on the show's title, no one would bless their love

That's the reason why they always retreated. For Taiga, he believes that he couldn't reach Manami. He always viewed Manami on top of a pedestal that he could only ever look up to. She always stuck to her principles, belonged in a good family, and had a respectable job. For him, reaching out to Manami would mean that he'd pull her down. Reaching her would mean to isolate her from the community that she belonged in. That is why all he ever did was imagine a time where he could reach her. And yet, he couldn't find the courage to try. He couldn't learn how to

Meanwhile, Manami had always thought that she couldn't break free from her father's expectations. She couldn't escape. Despite wanting the freedom to choose and to speak for herself, her head is always bowed down in the presence of her father. Even with other people, she is also like this. In her school, when they demand for her to not meet with Taiga again, all she did was say yes. Because that is what is expected of her: propriety. And so, despite yearning for him, she never tried to run. She couldn't learn how to

Well... that is until EP 9.

Finally, as Manami's mother charged in with her steel ladle, Manami FINALLY managed to run away. She finally learned how to escape. With her bag and sneakers, Manami ran as fast as she could. For the first time in her life, she had managed to break free, and to not care for doing so. She finally learned how to take charge of her own life. However, despite of her newfound courage, her feelings for Taiga remained locked somewhere inside of her. Even when she heard about Taiga being interrogated by the police, she tried to show that she wouldn't run to him.

That is, until Sakura-sensei said the words that she has never heard from anyone before.

"I want to support both of you."

Because Sakura-sensei knew how it feels to have no one support his love, too. With this, he wanted to stand beside Manami and Taiga in the way he knows how. With his words, Manami broke free from her own restrictions and hailed a cab to the police station to help Taiga. She even tried to visit Taiga in his dorm, and yet their paths never crossed. Instead, she decided to write a message in the rooftop's air conditioning unit, which has been a witness to their story from the very start.

"Fight!" She wrote. And with that, she decided to leave and start her new life. She finally got the keys to her new apartment. She even began doubting her ability to live alone.

Until she received a visitor.

Kawahara.

For a moment, she thought she was pulled in back to her former life. Kawahara reminded her of the times that she was still under the mercy of her father. Kawahara was the symbol of her being nothing but compliant. And so, she met Kawahara with the same reservation that she's always had.

Until Kawahara freed her from the remaining chains that were in her life.

"I think its best to cancel our wedding."

When she asked, Kawahara gave her an honest answer. That he attacked Taiga back in Miura beach. That Taiga didn't report him to the police. That when he asked Taiga why he did that, his answer has made it very clear.

"That guy is thinking of you." Kawahara said to Manami.

And so, with Taiga's love being clearly conveyed that even Kawahara saw right through it, the couple gained another ally.

For a woman like Manami, who has always lived abiding by the standards set upon her, it seemed unusual that her love is being supported by two unlikely figures.

A man from the same institution that condemned a man like Taiga, and a man that she almost married.

Taiga, on the other hand, has always been stronger in his resolve to no longer meet with Manami. Of course, it was still out of love. He always felt that she was better off without him. He always felt that she deserved a better life. And so, despite doing his best to forget about her, his mom's words lingered in his mind. That Manami talked to the police officer about his condition. That she begged the police officer to be patient with him as he reads the police's documents. His mom berated her, thinking that Manami simply pitied him. However, it never looked like an act of pity in Taiga's eyes.

Manami didn't pity him.

That was simply Manami's kindness.

However, despite all of it, he still aimed to move forward with his life. Even with Takechiyo saying "I want you and Chihuahua-sensei to date," as a parting message, he tried his best to ignore it. That is, until he was greeted by a surprise visitor.

Our banker-turned-stalker, Kawahara.

Honestly, their interaction in this scene was so funny. Kawahara was ready to enter his dorm as his "dachi (friend)", bringing food as an omiyage. Taiga thought that Kawahara was going to burn his dorm down. And yet, before it all escalated, Kawahara pulled out a note.

"Here," Kawahara said. "is Manami's new address."

Kawahara told him that they were no longer engaged. Kawahara encouraged him to go after her. And yet, despite receiving the note with a special hand-drawn map courtesy of Kawahara, Taiga still feels like him and Manami are living in two very different worlds. He still doesn't want to go after Manami. He had so many reasons that Kawahara lost his patience. "You're still going on and on about that?" Kawahara said. Had they not been interrupted by a Thai woman, they would've been involved in another brawl.

And so, with Kawahara being serious about showing his support, he encouraged him again. Go after her

But all of it was simply not enough. I guess between the two of them, Taiga was more afraid. Why wouldn't he? Manami was the first one to show him genuine love. Manami was the first person he wanted to show real love to; a love that is not influenced by money. But how could he do it? He's never lived a life where love was free of charge. His mother only showed him affection when he's able to give her money. He only showed affection to clients who had enough money to pay him. And so, he can be swayed by the support he has received, but never enough to be fully driven. No one could ever convince him to move.

That is, except for Manami herself.

As he caught a glimpse of the writing in the air conditioning unit, he saw the word "fight!"

A word that he is able to read because he was patiently taught by the person that wrote it.

And from that moment on, he knew.

He pulled out Kawahara's map, even getting lost along the way. He rang the doorbell to Manami's apartment, exactly at the time when she went out. He eventually decided to rest at the park, trying to come to terms over his failed romantic gesture. However, upon hearing a voice, he saw Manami.

On a side opposite to him.

Once again, they were separated from each other. This time, by a river. IF Taiga was still the old him, they would have remained settled on their own sides. He would've never crossed the gap. He would have accepted the barrier for what it is.

But times are different now.

Their love is no longer condemned by everyone. Now, there are people that are ready to stand behind them.

Takechiyo. Sakura-sensei. Momoko. Kawahara.

And so, Taiga took a step forward.

Taiga stepped on each stepping stone, almost stumbling along the way. He manages to find his balance despite almost falling in the water. Manami, on the other hand, was shouting words of encouragement. Which, if you'd listen carefully, is almost the same encouragements that she tells him as she teaches him to write.

"Do it slowly, slowly."

"You can do it!"

"You're doing so well!"

As I watched the scene, I couldn't help but remember how Manami was always the first one to reach out to him. He was always the first one to build walls the moment he feels that his feelings are growing. And yet, now, Taiga finally learned to do one thing on his own.

He finally learned how to reach out to her

As they are finally on the same side, they greeted each other with the warmest smiles and the loudest laugh. Now freely sitting closely beside each other, they teased one another using the iced treat that Manami bought. For the first time, Manami was no longer hiding under a stern facade. She happily eats the iced treat, and gives Taiga a huge smile as she managed to prank him. Taiga, on the other hand, was now able to show affection that came right out of his own heart and not his survival instincts.

After such a long time,

they finally learned how to love.

Thank you! Great recap! I feel so touched just reading it

Thank you, you brought up new ideas I had missed!  Some sound track info: when Taiga is finally going to Minami's apt to find her, Dvorak's "Going Home" from Sypmphony #9 is playing.  Tiaga is finally "going home."

In an earlier episode, right after she has broken up w Tiaga, French composer Erik Satie's melancholic "Gymnopédie #1: lent & doloureux" is playing in the background when Minami is w Takagawa in the restaurant. Translated, it means "slow and painful."  Could that be signaling that the break up w Takagawa is going to be slow and painful?

Trains play a big role from the beginning.  In an earlier episode, Minami was at a crossing when she called Taiga.  The gate was down and red lights flashed:  it was going to take a while for the train to be with her.  Taiga ended the convo abruptly: "Thanks."

But when Minami escapes her father, a train suddenly flashes by in the same direction just as Minami approaches the tracks. This time, she and the train (Taiga?) are going in the same direction.

And Taiga finds the red toy train and is playing with it just as he hears Minami's voice, and finally connects with her.    (I believe the train first came into sight in one of the first episodes when he is fixing a red train toy for his half sibling? Or maybe when I is looking at the trains through the fence, I will rewatch soon to see.)

Re: Sakura-sensei: I was surprised earlier when he seemed to parrot the official school stance on her relationship w Tiaga, and said something like "I'm glad you ended it. A relationship between a teacher and a host is not appropriate." I had actually thought maybe he and Taiga's sidekick had gotten it on, so I was startled that he would say that.  But perhaps he was fighting w the same feelings of being w a host, layered w his own struggles at self acceptance?  But then he came around, another example of the writers "fooling" us, perhaps....

I gotta say, I love the actor who is playing the father.  He's doing an amazing job seeming complelety unhinged.  And I want to see more w Kawahara actor, he's also hitting it out of the park and the Tik Tok that Mamacat shared of him w Raul was precious.  And I love Raul's sidekick.  He brought such energy to the drama. Whoever cast LTL deserves an Oscar.

I also LOVE the club president, so abrupt, so handsome, I LOVE his smile as he's pouring the champs in Ep 8. And such an interesting back story.  Not for him long analytic convos!  Get to the point, pat on the shoulder (or head) and "Bye."

I am not understanding what Minami means by "fight" (which she wrote on the bench).  "Fight for our love?  Fight to learn to read?  Fight for a better life?"  Does anyone have any ideas?

I think the message "fight" means fight for a better life (not to lose to his traumatic inner voices that he's baka or it's too late to have a better life/learn to write/read), because it's in line with her recent move to be an independent person. She also wants him to be more independent, 'coz she did say in the previous episode that it'll make his life easier if he knows how to read official documents and write properly.

I watched ep 9 again and in the scene w his mother in the cafe, Ave Maria was playing....brilliant!!

WOW. JUST WOW! Thank you so much for your input about the soundtrack! I'll be honest that I'm not well versed about music, so reading your input about the sound choices are so interesting. It really made me realize how much of a genius the show really is. Everything included in the scene is intentional, and so many layers could be unpacked.

 Car park:

Omg... you're right, trains are so integral to the story. Now that I realized it, the scene where Taiga reunites with Manami on EP 9 (where he was lying down on a slide after not being able to meet Manami in her apartment), the way he slid down almost sounded like the train's wheels rolling on the railroad tracks. If I could connect it with your interpretation, could it be interpreted as Taiga being like a "train," taking various tracks along the way but it all ends with him taking a path leading straight to Manami as he did on EP 9? Oh, to have a brain as great as that of the show's writer. I feel so much envy.

(Also, just to connect to that scene, the childlike attitudes of Taiga and Manami were extensively analyzed here on MDL. So I found it interesting that when they met again in EP 9, they were holding things that were once unattainable in their childhood. Manami was holding an ice cream, which was a type of food that her parents forbade her from buying when she was a child. Taiga was holding a train, which was a part of the childhood dream that he never got to achieve. So in a way, I saw that scene as them finally being able to reach out to their love towards one another, which they once thought to be unattainable.)

I agree with you. The actor is so handsome (respectfully) 😂 and he still has that veil of mystery to him still, which is why I'm looking forward for any revelations that are yet to unfold.

The way I interpret it, the word "fight!" is similarly used in Japan as it is in Korea (said as "fighting!"). It's meant to cheer someone on. So for me, it was Manami's way of cheering Taiga on as he moves forward with his life, and was meant to show how Manami would continue to support him and his happiness even when they are apart.

Which, if I could loop in another user's interpretation back in the first episode, could be connected with how she convinced him to learn how to write. When Manami was convincing him to learn how to write his own name back in EP 1, she told him that he should at least try to learn how to write his own name, and added "kore kara mo tame ni mo," which translates to "for your sake moving forward." Which is an odd choice, since it's more typical to say "for your future" (although this is what Netflix has used to translate this scene, probably since it's more easily understood).  For me, it seems like Manami was convincing Taiga to use this opportunity to learn as the starting point to have a better future, as his life continues.

And now that Taiga is taking more active steps for his life, the way Manami said "fight!" just seemed like she was saying "I'm here to cheer for you as you move forward."

Sorry if the reply is lengthy, I loved reading your interpretation!

Always enjoyed reading your analysis ❤ I haven't seen episode nine yet but after reading this I'll definitely look at it with more insight and depth.

On Kawahara: If there's one consistent thing about Kawahara's character it's that he's someone who always tries to get to the bottom of things. Like when Manami cancelled a date, he goes his way to stalk her ( which is very wrong),  when he found out about her going to the host club, he talked to Momoko to ask why.  When Manami's father was so eager for them to get married soon, he dug deeper for the reason.  And when he found out Taiga didn't reveal the truth , he went to him to understand why.  So I always thought,  "Though he's someone whose clumsy in both his actions and words, he's also one who tries to understand the reason behind everything."   I just want to mention this since I love how the writer  gave Kawahara's character some layer.

So episode nine did confirm my suspicion that he won't push through with the wedding which  I think is very in tune with this character, also because honestly I don't believe that he has the guts to do so after realizing very clearly how Taiga and Manami loves each other.

 Noriko:
That when he asked Taiga why he did that, his answer has made it very clear.

I agree with you so much! Despite everything, Kawahara had always sought after the truth. Which may be contradictory since he did lie about not having an affair partner back in the first episode, but it may be connected with what Momoko had said to him before: liars sniff out other liars. Which is why after he admitted about his affair to Manami, one thing I noticed about him is that his favorite phrase seemed to be "can I be honest?"

At first, his "investigative" attitude (a fancier way of describing his stalker tendencies) was sooo annoying and I hated every second of it. But with every information that he was able to gather, the more he saw the bigger picture. In fact, I might even say that out of all the characters (yes, including Manami and Taiga), he was the first person to see the entirety of the situation. He was the first to really know and understand the depth of Taiga and Manami's connection, since both Manami and Taiga had told him things that they never had the courage to say to each other. In other words: he was the only person who was able to hear both sides of the story. And instead of acting like a total antagonist, he showed growth.

And I agree with what you said about the writer giving Kawahara's character depth. I've said it a while ago, but the writer is honestly such a genius 😂 Kawahara was such a hated character and everyone just wanted him out of each episode. But EP 9 showed [spoiler again] that Manami and Taiga wouldn't have easily moved forward if Kawahara didn't intervene. He became an integral part of their story. The show never had any filler characters. All of them had a role. 😭

[If I may add, although this is another big spoiler: Kawahara did say in EP 9 that he did it because he also wanted to be loved like that. Aww. I can't believe I now sympathize with him.]

I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts if you would be interested in sharing them! Hope you enjoy the episode <3

Noriko: (I can't quote long replies apparently haha)

What FebFriday said about Kawahara was true, I hadn't thought of it that way, wanting to get to the bottom of things.  He's an interesting character for sure (and the director said he wanted to work w that actor).  The way K stalks them, it's clear he's jealous, but then he slugged Taiga, almost to his own surprise. It didn't seem out of character until later.  It's almost like he was attracted to Taiga in some way and was threatened by the butt-grab.  Or maybe just insulted, idk.

But later, to me, it's clear he admires Taiga, following him into the club, looking around w fascination, asking Taiga why Taiga didn't report his violence.   Kawahara is suddenly seeing a whole "glam" life that is diametrically opposed to dull banker land.  Taiga has everything Kawahara lacks (aside from money and prestige): personality, vibrance, confidence, swagger.  Taiga may be illiterate, but as a person, he has mad charisma and did I mention how really really really ridiculously good looking Taiga/Raul the man is? Kawahara is fascinated.

As they enter the club, Taiga sees Kawahara lagging behind, and one sub said "Hurry up" and the other said "Walk more confidently if you want to be a host."  I feel as though the correct word Taiga used is "confident," bc Kawahara lacks confidence in spades.  Everything he does is tentative, fists curled, hunched over, stuttering, eyes flickering.  Even when he rather heroically advises Minami to speak w her dad, he acts unsure, unsettled, walking around her bedroom befuddled, taking his time to get to the point, taking it all in.

And when T asks if he can make M happy?  "Probably."  Even then he's tentative.

This is why I believe he finally began to let go of Minami: Yes, he realizes Minami doesn't love him, and as Noriko points out, he says, he "wanted to be loved" like Taiga and Minami.  But honestly ("may I be honest?" lol)...I think it has to do w Monoko (the actress's name is Minami and she's actually a broadcaster haha)....I believe things began to change when Kawahara first spoke to Monoko.  Monoko lectured him right off the bat: no niceties, no pleasantries, just told him straight off to dump the married lover and confess all to Minami.  And after that,  Kawahara continually seeks out Monomo, asking her relationship advice.

It is my belief that, just as Minami finds herself subconsciously attracted to Taiga on a physical level without even realizing it until many episodes later, so too is Kawahara attracted to this petite, bossy, opinionated friend of his fiancée.  Monoko throws out orders, doesn't mince words, and he listens intently and immediately obeys her.

Minami doesn't even care enough about Kawahara to bother to ever ask him if he indeed DID slug Taiga.  And I almost think this is why he goes after her so intently: he wants her to react to him.  Of course , he also "wants to be loved," and it's clear she doesn't.  But he doesn't really ever even want her, his married lover is all he's needed and a purely physical relationship in a hotel room ordering room service curry was working out just fine for him. (Honestly, someone on the production team must have ordered curry in their own forbidden relationship, curry is just so random. And that hotel wasn't cheap.  Kawahara was spending a fair amount meeting up w Mrs. Married Lady.)

But it drives Kawahara crazy that Minami doesn't really want him either.  (Have you ever been "dumped" by someone that you didn't even like that much anyhow?  You're insulted. "I'm not interested in you but you found someone else?  How dare you?!" haha)

But at the same time that Kawahara is flogging a dead horse, hearing Minami rave about this poor illiterate student of hers whom she's canceling their dates to tutor, here is Monomo w her bossy ways, pushing him, jabbing her phone in his face, deriding him, telling him to leave and don't come back....unsure, tentative, insecure Kawahara laps it up. He dumped the married GF bc of Monomo.  He 'fessed up to Minami bc Monomo told him to.  He tried to act hard to get bc Monomo said to act hard to get.

Kawahara, who is only looking to get married bc it 'looks' better, and bc his father made the introduction, needs someone to tell him what to do, with his relationship and his life.  I believe that from the start, he's deep down attracted to Monomo, and the more he sees her, the more he realizes he actually is attracted to her more than Minami, even if it takes him until ep 9 to realize that.

And honestly, I think Monomo is open to it....she is lonely (bringing men back to her apt? as she said to Minami) and Karahawa is actually rather handsome (right?)....I believe that Monomo is flattered by his attention, sighing with annoyance and rolling her eyes at his request to meet him in episode 9, but nonetheless, she high-tails it to the bar and to me, they're clearly flirting (unless my Spanish is bad and I'm misreading). I wonder if they will end up together and the four of them will be friends for life, raising families together w cute lil mini Taiga and Kawaharas running around haha.

Noriko, I think you're right about Taiga lying on those rollers, similar to train tracks. And my Spanish sub said of the word "fighting"--se puede.  "You can do it!"

And on Discord, someone posted a photo of two children in the park at the end of ep 9, sharing a treat, just as moments later, so too did our leads.  That writer and director--wow--what other Easter eggs are there?  I am scouring the internet looking for clues that I missed, everything is so layered and so many people are noticing things I did not.'

Speaking of sound....when Taiga traces his fingers along her message on the roof---the sound STOPS.  Just incredible.  I would never have thought of that.  The writer and director and whoever else is on the production team....I'm in awe.

The writer and director said in interviews that they want the leads to be normal and maybe even a bit clumsy (notice how Minami is always tripping haha).  And Raul is THE MOST AMAZING DANCER and yet so far, he has not shown off his moves, he doesn't lose his balance either on the sea wall or crossing the little pond....he's really tamping it down...I want to see him let loose and show off his amazing physicality,  but I suppose that's not really fitting for his character.

And yes, you Noriko are correct, he holds the toy train and she holds the ice cream, good catch!  And thank you for the "for your sake moving forward" correction.  It's so helpful for those of us who rely solely on subs.

One other thing about Kawahara: he says to Taiga, "When you hit someone you hurt yourself," or something like that.  I feel like that line has more meaning also and I'm wondering what it is.  Like, maybe he's thinking if he does good (advising the two leads to get together) maybe good will come back to him?  IDK but I immediatetly thought the comment was deeper than it seemed....curious what others think.

 Car park:

I noticed this too! He is the most honest with Momoko (and he had said this to her when Momoko was complaining about him seeking her advice all the time lol) mainly because Momoko is a very straightforward character. She never minces her words, she never lies, and she never wastes time hiding secrets.

If I could be honest... their actors have such good chemistry, but there's a voice in my heart saying that Momoko deserves a better man (I still need more time to get-over Kawahara's stalking tendencies, although my heart has definitely softened for him now). I would be content if they end up being besties 😂 I guess right now, Momoko is Kawahara's number one "dachi".  But I agree with you, I do wish that they'd end up being Taiga and Manami's lifelong friends. That would be so cute! Momoko gives such a cool aunt energy, and Kawahara looks like an uncle who would spoil his friends' kids because he seems to like giving stuff a lot (I only noticed this now, but almost never forgets to bring an omiyage when visiting people such as Momoko, Manami, and even Taiga. That goodness must've always been in him).

 Car park:
Noriko, I think you're right about Taiga lying on those rollers, similar to train tracks. And my Spanish sub said of the word "fighting"--se puede.  "You can do it!"

Yes, that's another possible interpretation! "Fight" has quite a lot of meanings depending on the context. <3

Wait I never noticed this? I'm cryinggg 😭 That is too cute! Maybe it goes to show that not only did adult Manami and Taiga find security and peace, but so did little Manami and little Taiga. Hold up, I might actually get emotional. I love them both so much.

 Car park:

That's also a very powerful line back in EP 8! If I remember correctly, Kawahara said it at the club scene when he first went to Taiga to ask him as to why Taiga never reported him to the police. The way I interpret it, that was the start of Kawahara realizing that he was doing more harm than good.

At that point, he was getting hints that Manami had feelings for Taiga, and yet Taiga's feelings are still unconfirmed to him. With this, he did all that he could to ensure that Taiga and Manami won't meet anymore. He snitched on Manami to her dad. He followed them to Miura Beach. He even punched Taiga on Miura Beach as well. However, when he heard Taiga's explanation and how Taiga only wanted to protect him and Manami, he was exposed to Taiga's kindness; a kindness that he didn't expect. With this, I interpret the statement "when you hit someone you also hurt yourself" to be Kawahara's regret over trying to tear both Manami and Taiga apart. He must've realized the true extent of their connection, and how they had genuine feelings for each other. Maybe, even just a little, Kawahara must've felt sad when he realized what he did, especially since he also wanted to be loved sincerely (which he said on EP 9).  Maybe that's the reason why he wanted to hold on to Manami so badly, because Kawahara knew that Manami had the tendency to give her all for love; Kawahara probably thought that Manami could give him that love, especially since he never got to receive it from his ex who was married to someone else. And so, to make up for that regret, Kawahara showed his support to the main couple. <3
