Always Meet Again
This is where we DON'T glaze over the fact that this series had A LOT of holes in its plot. Let me go over them as a way of addressing my disappointment as a writer. This is in no way intended to discourage anyone from watching Always Meet Again. If you are here and you have yet to finish (or start) the series, I recommend stopping yourself from reading more.
Time travel
I have always been so fascinated when writers dare to touch on this theme or use it as a plot device. It is challenging, for sure, and it shows in how AMA (and many other series/movies/novels) struggled to incorporate it effectively. Time is indeed an illusion. Transcending time isn't exactly possible, but Sci-Fi stories have played on different ways to make it seem so. As someone who loves the arts, I am fond of the idea that Jang Hye Seong got a chance to go back in time by illustrating Lee Woo Jin in his sketchbook. I find it romantic, but a question is bugging me: did their first meeting happen the way it did in the pilot episode? We occasionally see fragments of their original past when it's apparent to Hye Seong that something changed. But, seeing as the story did mostly follow his perspective, I would assume he didn't have the time to even reminisce about that particularly significant memory as he tries to make sense of seeing his first love again in the flesh. The pilot episode was definitely messy, but that's most time-travel series for me. I often have to remind myself that everything does not have to make sense.
Now, jumping into Episode 4, when Hye Seong ripped a page from his sketchbook, light mysteriously blinded us all, and then *woosh* he was back to the present. But he isn't at school anymore. Why? Did the writers think, "Ah, let's transport him to the columbarium so he can visit Woo Jin, and everything else will just follow"? And by everything else, they mean BIG AHH LORE DROP. I was devastated just as Hye Seong was after he found out the truth behind Woo Jin's death. That was quite the turning point for the plot to shift from passively reminiscing about memories to actively changing them. I love the consistency in terms of the story, allowing Hye Seong to go back once again by sketching. How ridiculously depressing would it have been if that didn't work? I also like how evidence of the timeline changing appeared back at Hye Seong's place, so we can happily rule out that he was just lucid dreaming. Speaking of, I'm feeling drowsy now, so I will have to end this here to give myself the chance to also dream of whatever. I may or may not come back anytime soon, but hey, at least I don't just disappear into thin air *wink*,
