LinAn is the third in importance in the novel and Huai Qing is the second, as the first in importance there is another one who here in the drama does not appear at the moment and in the cast list the name does not appear. But from what I read the producer has chosen LinAn as the absolute female protagonist.

Seeing this now after watching the drama, feels like validation to some of my thoughts regarding Xu Qi An and some of the female characters in the drama, especially now that I know that the original source material is harem style.

I knew nothing about the novel when I was watching the drama, but I kept thinking how much more I preferred a few other female characters with Xu Qi An instead of Princess Lin An. For instance, Grand Princess Huai Qing with Xu Qi An, I find to be a better match than him and Princess Lin An. With their intelligence and skills, I can't help but think of how they would make a power couple. Princess Lin An's character frustrated me a lot of the times before they started making her a more sympathetic character, and even then I wasn't completely sold on the idea of her and Xu Qi An. And it also seemed that once Princess Lin An came into the picture, Xu Qi An's character would regress in ways I wasn't a fan of.

I also liked the idea of Xu Qi An and Chu Caiwei as they were just so comfortable around each other, and she is the one he met first and had been around the longest.

Also, I feel that him and Mu Nan Zhi would be an especially poignant pairing especially given her past experiences. Someone like Xu Qi An would be exactly who she would need, and I found she brought out a side of him that I liked. And keeping in mind what the leader of the Realm Sect had told Xu Qi An about if he were to form a bond with the lady with the Bondi (?) beads, I can't help but to hope that the drama keeps the harem aspect of the novel because I would really like to see these pairings become reality in the drama. I only started watching C-Dramas a little over 4 years ago, but I have yet to see a drama featuring the leads that was a true harem, and the harem aspect of it is respected with each character treated with respect and attention. That would be intriguing to witness in this drama as it appears that there would be a sequel.

Perhaps the screenwriter didn't want to create redundant characters. And at the drama, this most charming and unusual woman, the only one in this world, will not be Shen Shu's daughter, but his beloved. After Archat activated Shen Shu's memory, he remembered the Overlord. He remembers her even in this state!

As for me, not bad idea: she is Shen Shu's beloved, her mother is Lord Dao's beloved, which was killed, defending daemonfolk.

Nanzi and Linan are both somewhat similar in circumstances and both are not fighters so maybe they might have mixed both of them.

I am somehow biased towards Mu Nazi in the novel. Maybe its because of the ML. His affection transferred over!

Both of them aren't fighters but, Mu Nian Zhi has someting within her that wanted by Royal Blood. She was also the one who bought the pearl bracelet. Actually ever since the beginning of the story, there is a hint that she could be the most important character in the future. Though, XQ's journey is far from halfway, they're path might still be crossed again as they're destined to from the start to ruin the Emperor's plan by killing his brother. Mu Nian Zhi greatly contributed in that, since she's the required sacrifice by the evil duke. XQ has not much romantic interest with Lin An. It's Lin An who loves XQ. Though XQ also has a feeling for her previously, but it does not mean he loves her. He might've forget the feelings for her because XQ is not much a lovey dude the first place. He is just an easygoing guy. Besides, they both doesn't encounter life - death situation together unlike what happened with him and Mu Nianzhi.

I think, the female lead in season 2 is not Lin An and Huai Qing, but rather the last girl Mu Nian Zhi. As both of them possess the same power. I also think, she is the missing character you said that is in the novel but in Drama does not appear yet, since she appeared in later episodes of the drama and her background is still mysterious aside from being a duchess. I guess she would be the FL in the next season.

This character's name is not even in the list of characters in the drama. She is the girl Shen Shu remembered when he regained some memories. She is indeed a very interesting and important character.

Shen Shu not a girl at all. He is a Demon Hand owner. 

There is an episode in the drama(ep. 32, from 38:00) where Du Ku the Archat returned some of memories to Shen Shu. And then Shen Shu remembered the girl. He called her "The Mistress". I am talking about that girl.

Moreover, this girl is the mysterious Mistress to whom the white fox Fu Xiang sends her spying reports.

Let me remind you: this is a Novel spoiler tred. The content of a novel is about three times more  than that of a drama. And there are many more characters. I guess, it whould take three seasons to tell the audience the whole story. 

Xu Qi An has had more than two romantic lines.  

He became more and  more older and experienced, and the girls he met became more and more beautiful, smart and powerful.

Ah sorry. I thought you say, Shen Shu is the girl  😂. So. the girl you referring is Mu Nian Zhi. Sorry got confused  😂
