Quadrille  French ballroom dance for four couples which was very popular at the court of Napoleon I and which found its way into Britain in the early 19th century. The term also refers to the position of corps de ballet dancers within the hierarchy of the Paris Opera (first and second quadrilles, two of the lowest ranks in the company).
