Hey everyone đź‘‹
Quick question for the Thai BL fans here: have you ever watched a Korean BL webtoon or an old-school Japanese yaoi and felt like something was... different? Not better or worse, just a completely different vibe?
I've been wondering about that for years, so I finally dug into it properly — why Japanese BL feels more ambiguous and slow, why Korean BL tends to hit darker and more dramatic, why Taiwanese BL is often way more politically direct, and why Thailand ended up becoming the genre's global powerhouse in less than a decade.
Turns out it's not random. Each country's BL grew out of a completely different relationship with LGBT visibility, censorship, and fandom culture — and once you see the pattern, you can't unsee it in every show you watch.
I put it all together in a book called From Yaoi to Y-Series: A Fan's Guide to the Evolution and Rise of Asian Boys Love — Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. It traces the whole journey from 1970s manga to GMMTV's global takeover, with a full chapter comparing what makes each country's BL distinct.
If you're into Thai BL specifically, I also wrote two companion guides — one on the culture behind the dramas, one on the Thai language you hear in every episode but never fully catch in the subtitles.
Curious which country's BL hits different for you — and why. 👇
