This is where all information is from
Mental health issues can affect everyone but unfortunately individuals part of LGBTQIA+ is more likely to face them, me included. This is due to social isolation, discrimination, violence, and rejection among other reasons.
Mental health
1 in 2 had experienced depression
3 in 5 had experienced anxiety
LGBTQIA+ individuals are 1.5 x more likely to develop depression or anxiety
1 in 8 aged 18-24 had attempted suicide
1 in 2 transgender individuals had suicidal thoughts
4 in 5 transgender individuals have experienced suicidal ideation
2 in 3 transgender individuals have experienced depression
2 in 5 students have a mental health disorder
1 in 2 LGBTQIA+ young individuals self harm
1 in 2 have insufficient opportunities to connect with other people
LGBTQ+ young people who attended schools where students were very accepting of LGBTQ+ people attempted suicide at less than half the rate of those in schools where students were not accepting. This is one of the most powerful evidence points for the role that school bullying prevention, inclusive education, and supportive environments play in protecting LGBTQ+ young lives.
I feel disgusted at how high these statistics are when they shouldn't be. A great way to lower these statistics is information, information age appropriate at all ages and access to this information.
Due to government laws all schools in the UK has to teach sex education which included healthy relations, red flags in relationships, periods and pregnancy, healthy sex (including consent using this video using Tea. I loved that video ) and not once was LGBTQIA+ was explained fully only what LGBT letters stood for. That's it. A place where you are supposed to be able to get reliable information but get nothing. Now imagine in that classroom, you are trying to process where you fit in with no external help and you're part of LGBTQIA+.
