Does anyone know how to get into historical bls. I really want to try historical dramas but it never works out. I've not watched any historical dramas ever.

dora:

So far Deep In and Payback are my two favorite shows this year, along with Fake Fact Lips. Hopefully no endings will ruin my love for the currently airing shows.

I feel like there are so many good shows right now that even some of the best ones are getting lost in the shuffle. Shout out to The Prosecutor’s Proposal and The Edge of Horizon. Regarding Don’t Be Too Emotional, I am waiting to see what direction it goes in. Same with Winter Sun, which is still worth watching just because the visuals and music are so beautiful, and the couples have great chemistry.

I'm happy you're enjoying so many titles that I'll be binge-watching once they finish airing : Deep In, Payback, The Prosecutor's Proposal, and The Edge of Horizon. I'll check out the Deep In OST I'm curious about it. The leads in Payback are cute.

I've enjoyed some historical BLs. Not sure which ones you've tried watching:

  • Century of Love Starts historical then switches to modern as the 100-year mark draws to a close. It becomes more urgent for San to find the reincarnation of Wat. Sensei Tao has made various calculations that lead to Vee, but San is far from accepting that outcome.

  • I Feel You Linger in the Air: Uncut Version Probably one of the biggest surprises of 2023 for me. Great production and the leads' chemistry, from lingering touches and looks, are on point. You'll want to watch it just for the olive oil. A Season 2 was hinted at but nothing more has been mentioned.

  • Khemjira One of the best BLs 2025. The inclusion of so much Thai culture and tradition made this so much more intriguing to me. The reincarnation plot, usually not my favorite, played a central part with some twists and turns. It doesn't hurt that we had 4 cute guys in the show.

  • Love in the Moonlight I hadn't heard anything about this BL and just started watching when it was released. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the production, the plot and the acting. It was definitely one I looked forward to each week.  Not only did they address homophobia but also social inequity. TW: Violent murders

  • Meet You at the Blossom A rare collaboration for China, Taiwan and Thailand to bring this Danmei to fruition, where we got a proper historical costume BL and not a censored bromance. TW: DubCon, Abuse by parent figure

  • Memoir of Rati An absolute gem of a show. I loved every moment of this drama, which touched on class issues as well as homophobia. The second couple, Mek and Dech (Aou and Boom), completely captured my heart as they battled classism, mainly from Dech's father. In Dech's grandfather, we find an ally who recognizes Mek's intelligence and determination, allowing him to take the foreign language exam. Dech treats Mek as his equal from the beginning of their friendship, which slowly grows into a wanting "this forever with you."

Great and Inn shine in their roles as Rati and Thee. Their chemistry is undeniable, and their characters' attraction is palpable, becoming very difficult for them to hide in a time period where it's dangerous to be homosexual. Even Thee's nobility cannot shield him from consequences when his grandmother, Princess Nareerat, finds out about them.

  • Nobleman Ryu's Wedding Historical gender bender

  • The Edge of Horizon Currently on air

  • The Untamed A classic. Although this was a Censored Adaptation Of Same-sex Original Work, they had done a fabulous job letting us know how much the MLs cared for and loved each other. I loved the scene where drunk Lan Zhan gives chickens to Wei Ying, a common Chinese betrothal ritual. Exceptional chemistry between the leads.

  • To Sir, with Love Set in 1930s and 1940s, Romance, Fantasy, Drama (I would say melodramatic, esp. for Song’s first and second wives). Thian has been groomed to take over the family business, but he has a secret that is costing lives. I love the relationship between brothers Yang and Thian.

  • Word of Honor Don't stop at episode 36. Watch the short epilogue/episode 37, Word of Honor - Epilogue.  Censored Adaptation Of Same-sex Original Work

  • Wuliang Short film, Wuxia, labeled as bromance; my take is BL.

Thank you for this list. I definitely have options. I've only tried century of love. I was looking for a guide to how to start historical BLs, not a list of historical BLs.

I think I'll be too busy for a full drama update post so I'll just post as it happens this week.

ChermChey: Final episode today! I'll just say I'm smitten with TutorYim okay. No substance, but mindless enjoyable, entertainment.

Love Destiny ep 1: Transmigration!! I'm here for this! Great first episode. Ep 2 will be the one that will tell me if this will be good or not. Depends on how they handle Great in his new environment.

Your Sunmer, My Storm ep 1: @p43425 Thank you for reminding me of this drama, MDL has it for release on 07/11 so after realizing the international release was later I forgot. 😅 I absolutely love the family in this. The sister: 'Get to know him. You'll like him too.' Yeah, I bet he will. You're going to have to call your boyfriend brother-in-law 🤭

Knot ep 3: I like the foreshadowing at the shooting range on how deadly a pure omega can be.

The Table: Final today, but it's memebers first so I won't watch it until probably Sunday.

Side note: I'm also having fun watching Mr. Kill.

First episode of Deep In, when Zhang Zhun takes a shower in his hotel room, and here comes the same music that was used during one of the first NC scenes in My Stubborn. I lost all my concentration, not even sure I'll finish the episode.

I have a friend who is a BL fan, and she wants to try watching dramas that are different from her usual preference. She's currently watching Payback which I think is a little too intense for her (since she is more into cute stuff), so I'm trying to find other dramas to recommend to her. I've already recommended Khemjira and she said she might check it out, but that's honestly the only one I could think of. Do you guys know what else I could recommend?

Her usual preference would be shows like: Your Sky, Duang With You, We Are, Fourever You, and Perfect 10 Liners.

She would probably like the Your Summer, My Storm on viki, in her preference. For a finished drama Semantic Error.

Outside her preference is harder because I don't really know what could be tamer than Payback as I consider that pretty tame in my own preference. Maybe Love Upon A Time? Still sweet but has a plot outside of the BL.

You have a good memory ! If I remember correctly, the same thing happened to you recently with a song that played during an NC scene in The Boy Next World.

How about KinnPorsche, Goddess Bless You From Death, Jack & Joker, and Revenged Love ? Cute isn't the word that comes to mind when I think of them. And maybe just a little cute : Never Let Me Go and Century of Love.

I kind of remember the music when the NC scene was good and it matches well together (or I watched the NC scene so many times that I know the song by heart). In reality I may have a max of 5 NC scenes that I can associate to a song, but it seems these songs were reused everywhere. And yes the song in the last NC scenes of The Boy Next World (Thai version) is played at the end of ep2 of Don't Be too Emotional.

Oh I remember now it's when he answers the call !
