Mr. Fanboy ep9
You Maniac ep9
Rough week! What happened to the curse of ep11?! I feel like we got the curse of ep9! Well, almost. In both shows the couples clearly love each other, but difficult life events are causing them to push their partners away.
You Maniac
Dean is so scared he’ll repeat the mistakes his father made that he breaks up with Moth. Luckily Moth realizes Dean is just scared and grieving, so he returns for the cremation ceremony. I pretty much sobbed from the fight/break-up straight through to the end. So even if I complained that You Maniac didn’t deliver on its original premise, it is still giving us interesting characters dealing with significant life issues. I am clearly still totally invested. It’s just a different story than I expected, and not as exciting week-to-week as I had hoped. But WilliamEst are still delivering strong performances, and I’m here for it.
Mr. Fanboy
Ok, the plot is seriously plotting. Wtf happened and who’s behind it?! I wasn’t surprised the video got leaked, but did Nine do it? He’s so manipulative it’s hard to know. But he certainly didn’t want his show cancelled or his boyfriend to break up with him, even if he was just using the boyfriend. And poor Wan! He was trying to withstand all the hate, but when he was doxxed and his sister got attacked, he just couldn’t take it anymore! I was crying with Wan when he broke down asking to be released from his contract. And then when he shifted to “happy couples” with Third, I kept wondering how he could feel so happy, even temporarily, with everything that was going on. But it turns out he just wanted one last day with Third before he disappeared. Wow, Save really upped his acting game! I was crying with him again when he asked for the break-up. I hope it’s not noble idiocy of Wan thinking he can fix everything on his own by running away. He’s allowed to reach his limit and back out because he’s exhausted and scared. That I understand. So I’m waiting for what’s next. I am so hoping Nunez’s character helps Nine get what’s coming to him, because Nine seems worse than ever. Poor Third, though. He’s so honest and loving and just trying to help Wan, and this is what he gets! Once again, the NC scene showed real emotion and connection between Third and Wan, but it ended up being so bittersweet.
I feel like I’ve been put through the ringer today!
The Missing Piece
I actually finished this first thing today. I really loved it. I know the ending left a few questions unanswered, but overall I thought the show was beautiful. I’m a sucker for rich, overprotective, and emotionally restrained, and I also love the “trauma-healing” trope, so this show was made for me. Add questions about the past and how things turned out the way they did, plus intense but unspoken love, and I was hooked. I saw a meme of the main characters saying “have you ever fallen in love with a couple?” I thought the meme was a bit silly at the time, since I fall in love with couples all the time, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this wasn’t referring just to loving the MLs/main characters, it was about how special they were as a couple and how much their journey together touched us. I know it didn’t hit this hard for everyone, but it definitely did for me. The love story was truly touching and the actors really expressed so much throughout. Also the theme song really added emotional depth. Despite some story flaws, I gave this show a 9.0. It probably deserved an 8.5, but I loved this couple and their journey enough to bump up the rating.
