MDZS was my first step into the bl novel world (I'd already been reading manga/webtoon) and I really have to agree, while I do love watching the dramas when they come up on my list... nothing beats reading (maybe it's because I'm a bookworm hahaha).

Same here when it comes to rading bl novels I just wish I can discuss all the (200) novels I had read with someone. I just cant stop talking about it.

Anyone here who likes to read bl novels and mangas? Cause I read a lot of them more than watching dramas.

I do read a lot of manhuas /manhwas and Chinese danmeis for novels! I usually have phases where I switch between binge watching bl dramas or binge reading novels lol

I used to read yaoi manga back then when I was in high school, nowadays I like to watch more stuff than to read. But I do read loads of webtoons/manhwas ( not especially bl related). :) It's something of having the visuals/music/videography combined that makes it better than reading, but sometimes the manga/novel from which it was adapted to is way better than the drama. More detailed and wholesome sometimes. Not blaming the poor rookie actors but some are not really cut for this type of gig.

I'm not sure if this counts but M/M romance novels are gaining popularity.  If you are a member of Kindle Unlimited, you can find so many novels for free on there.  Keep in mind, the standard American romance novel contains detailed sex scenes so if that's not your thing, maybe steer clear.  But yeah, if those count then I'm definitely an avid reader LOL

I haven't read yet american bls mostly chinese but if their are any good american bl novels I'd like to try reading them.

But then one thing that never happens in BLs compared to ur average straight couple romanceu is that they never meet parents?

I've come across a few BLs where they came out to their parents and introduced their partners to them.  Sometimes, it's early on in the series but most of the time, it's later on after they've been obsessing over what the parents might think.  Most often, I get more emotional watching these scenes than any of the lovey-dovey stuff the couples themselves do.  Off the top of my head, some that stand out are He's Coming to Me, Plus and Minus, TharnType and maybe a little in Until We Meet Again.  From what I've seen, the most popular usage of this storyline is to bring about the ever-changing views and acceptance of same sex relationships, starting with the people closest to the couple: ie, the parents and immediate family.

I guess I should ask what defines BL.. I mean, I know it stands for boys-love but can it also mean basically any love story where the main leads are both male?  Also, is it more of an Asian distinction or can Western novels also fall under that umbrella?

As for "good american novels," I guess it depends on the person's preference and opinion but from what I've seen, there are a lot of similar tropes that occur across the board.  I guess relationships are pretty universal in that respect. LOL.

Before I got into Asian shows, I was reading about 300 books a year. Some recommendations for M/M novels:

  • London Calling Series (3 books; 3rd book is not yet released) by Alexis Hall
  • Big Bad Wolf Series (5 books) by Charlie Adhara [explicit]
  • Rules of Possession (3 books) by S.E. Harmon [explicit and one of the MCs could be described as toxic]
  • Enlightenment Series (5 books) by Joanna Chambers [historical; explicit]

i had a big phase for webtoons and i would read a lot of bl, then i got more into television so fell off it. now though i am reading more manga, but mainly the ones from drama that i've watched. the only actually book ive read for a while is the one for the untamed (i've been reading it for over a year...)

No one told me SF9 Zuho would be a lead star in a BL called "Starstruck"!

I can't wait for it to air! Let me tell you that I will be the first to watch it immediately.

I thought this group would be dangerous for constantly making me add more shows to my watchlist but now it looks like I also have to worry about novels as well lol.  I will be looking those up for sure, thanks for the recommendation!

Listen, as a bi person myself I know how hard that is to do even to a random stranger or friend. Parents will always be part of our lives even if we are close to them or not. That is the most nerve wrecking thing I've ever experienced, and still not came out to my parents, only to my sister ( and she was hella awkward about it, heh..). This sounds interesting, so I would want to check out more of those. Wondering if there is a tag on here for it or something. I've noticed Plus and Minus on viki I think. I got so many good suggestions from you all here all. Thank you, you are all amazing and hoping you are allies too not only BLs fans. :)
