Rikku:
Really nice to see a family show on National television giving space to representation.
I'm hopeful that the next generations will be more open and inclusive.
Strictly's taken its time to get here but they're doing alright. Started with same sex dances between the pros, moved onto two women dancing together in the competition, then two openly gay men, Johannes Radebe and John Whaite, who were given a lot of time to talk about representation, growing up gay and how important it would have been to have that. They also spoke about a more vulnerable side of masculinity, and danced it eloquently. Worth looking up their clips on youtube.
Last night's was the second dance Nikita (the blond man in the hoodie) has done with a male pro. The first was a sizzling contemporary rumba with Carlos Gu. Nikita is currently dancing with a male actor, Layton Williams, the fifth same sex pair in the competition. (Names so you can look them up. Don't want to clog the thread up with links but I'm happy to go into DMs if anyone wants some.)
Will link to the group dance (Johannes and Kai) which came early in the year John and Johannes danced. There were still Covid restrictions and everything was extra emotional. Everyone loves JoJo and it's a gorgeous romantic Viennese waltz. And then halfway through - and two years on I'm still unable to even think about this without crying, let alone speak - all of the other pro dancers move into same sex pairs. It's such a profound and beautiful moment of affirmation and celebration, dancers declaring their full support in the language they do best.
Strictly's not just encouraging the kids to be open and inclusive; they're getting more of the older generations on board too. There is hope.
