I think when we start to analyse series in such a technically and criticizing way we lose touch of the "magic" and feelings we had watching our first series and what made us become in love with the genre. I'm similar. I think in terms of how well they achieved what they set out to do ("lower" ambitions done well will rate higher for me than a bigger ambition which bit off more than they could really handle in the allotted episodes) and how much I enjoyed spending time in their world. Storyline and message are important to that. Red flag behaviours from MC characters who don't grow out of it knock the score right down for me.

I am not say that production and writing quality is not important but for me it should not manifest into such staunch criticism that we forget to just enjoy the series.
You make a very good point. I hadn't thought of it that way, but yeah, it would certainly be hard to enjoy a series if I had to think about all that as well.

The right fit is a great way to look at it. Very true! I was thinking the other day how would I rate some of my first dramas if I were to watch them now. I've never re-watched a drama, but I'm considering it. I would be curious how they might "fit" me now. :-)

I always ask persons who loved it what about it in terms of the friends to lovers trope that made them love it. For me I loved and appreciated the messages and the story-line of it but the romance part just never hooked me. I did not feel the chemistry on a romantic level. I felt that their friendship was established in a way that I could not look past it and that made their couple scenes cringey for me. Another thing is that the amount of times Seewi said "Cake" annoyed the hell out of me.
(re "My Only 12%") I totally understand what you're saying. Earth can indeed be quite cringe, but somehow it worked for me here: That's the character he plays, and somehow he didn't grate on me like in other roles he's played (Tar in "Love By Chance", Intouch in "Until We Meet Again"). For me personally, Santa and Earth really worked.
Yes, so many BLs follow the same tropes of (childhood)-friends-to-lovers, enemies-to-lovers, love-at-first-sight, boss-subordinate, etc. - but on the other hand, if it's a good love story that I feel invested in, I'm fine with that. What I particularly liked here is the intimacy (emotional and physical) and powerful bond between the two boys going back to their earliest childhood; I've not seen any other BL that quite compares to this.
I also recognise that this series is probably too slow for many. For me, not. I appreciated the well-structured and well-written story, the slice-of-life authencity, and the development of the characters and of their struggles with their feelings and jealousies.

I've started rewatching dramas (mostly 10s through 8s, but with some others as well if I feel like it) and while I won't change the scores on mdl, I do feel like I will feel a little different especially with some of the older ones that may not have any of the themes I've enjoyed the past few years.

I also enjoy re-watching things - usually just to enjoy something I really liked (comfort), but sometimes I also see it in a different way, or pick up on more details. It's rare that my basic opinion changes, but in one recent example it did: "Kieta Hatsukoi" ("My Love Mix-Up"). The first time I watched it I was disappointed, mainly because I was expecting a more serious and traditional BL between the two idols (especially Michieda). When I more recently re-watched it, I really liked it so much more because I had the right expectations - and I even upped my rating to ten stars. It's really rare that I change a rating, but it can happen!

Accurate description. This movie is not so much a love story as the story of a boy struggling with his sexuality, a subject painfully familiar to many of us in our younger lives. Ironic title in that some of the boys are definitely not sweet. It's really good - and particularly notable as Chimon Wachirawit's first lead role at the age of 16. It's on the "Leaving Gagaoolala soon" list, so if you're interested, hurry.
