2023 IN BL QUESTIONNAIRESunshineMar:
Since I’m overwhelmed with Sunshine’s questions ("Gah, I can't decide!"), I shall evade with some of my own creative categories (limited to BLs I’ve actually watched with MDL release date in 2023):
All-around favourite Thai BL: “Moonlight Chicken” (unless one counts “My School President” as 2023)
All-around favourite Korean BL: tie between “Eighth Sense” (drama) and “Our Dating Sim” (fluffy)
All-around favourite Japanese BL: tough choice because there were a number of really excellent BLs, but I’ll go with “My Beautiful Man: Eternal” (but largely based on the trilogy as a whole, so that’s not really fair – otherwise it would probably be “Kimi to Nara Koi wo Shite Mite mo”)
All-around favourite Taiwanese BL: “Stay By My Side” (I haven’t yet watched “Kiseki: Dear To Me”, so I can’t compare)
Best BL which is arguably a bromance: “Stay With Me” (Who would have expected a BL this good from Mainland China?)
Best BL with no official international release: “Kimi ni wa Todokanai” (Thank you, Bilibili!)
Most trashy and lurid BL of 2023 which I’m ashamed to admit that I liked: “Playboyy”
Most raw and graphic yet dramatically purposeful and non-trashy sex scene in a BL: “Bokura no Micro na Shuumatsu”
Best and funniest BL still airing as of 31/12: “Cooking Crush” (My first Off/Gun BL … gosh these guys are good!)
Best non-BL with a meaningful gay side theme: “Beni Sasu Life” (No spoilers!)
Cutest little kid in a BL: Tane in “Bokura no Shokutaku” / "Bokura no Kyujitsu" (Astonishingly good 7yo actor)
Best Korean BL which I loved but many others hated: “Love Mate”
Best BL which made me embarrassingly teary: “Moonlight Chicken” (Li Ming + Heart storyline) (Warning in case you ever take me on a date to a movie theatre: I get teary easily. Yes, I'm really a guy.)
Best food-themed BL: “Zenra Meshi” (even though not so great as a BL love story, very interesting food porn + my beloved Yutaro)
Most disappointing BL which had a good story concept and could have been really good but was just terribly executed: “Luminous Solution”
Worst BL which was so bad I didn’t watch it, so technically I can’t list it here: “Crazy Handsome Rich"
Almost worst BL except that Bigboom is such a cutie, so I have to be kind: "Future"
Almost worst BL which was awful in the first episodes but then got much better, especially in the last two episodes which were actually pretty good: “Middleman’s Love”
Worst acting performance in a BL: I hate to sound catty … but it has to be Gun Napat in “Luminous Solution” (OK, his character in “Love By Chance” was cute, but this guy really can’t act)
Cutest and sweetest totally new CP: Newyear + Jur from “Firstly Like You” (= excerpts from “Hit Bite Love”)
Best fluffy and insubstantial TikTok micro-series starring my beloved Tutor and Yim: “Our Winter”
Best BL short with virtually no spoken lines: “Childhood”
Honourable mention for best BL not on MDL: “My Goofy Deskmate” (Vietnam – fluffy vignette-type mini-episodes, but with such good, funny, engaging characters)

Best BL with no official international release: “Kimi ni wa Todokanai” (Thank you, Bilibili!)p43425:
Isn't it being on Netflix means it has an official international release?
Most trashy and lurid BL of 2023 which I’m ashamed to admit that I liked: “Playboyy”p43425:
haha feel the same, I actually like this series even though it's so trashy indeed
Most raw and graphic yet dramatically purposeful and non-trashy sex scene in a BL: “Bokura no Micro na Shuumatsu”p43425:
Agree! I was actually surprised by it (mostly after seeing Seto Toshiki in Senpai, Danjite Koidewa! which was quite bad imo).
I don't do well with keeping track of a plot week by week (let alone multiple ones) and watching things everyone else was talking about was more of a failure than a success so there's a lot of 2023 I haven't seen. From what I did:
1. What was your favorite BL/s? Bokura no Shokutaku, Moonlight Chicken
2. What was your least favorite BL/s? Jun & Jun, Kiseki: Dear to Me
3. What was your favorite main couple/s of the year? Minoru & Yutaka, Jim & Wen. Friends helping each other work through grief and difficulties so their relationship starts off on a good foundation.
Minoru & Yutaka co-parenting Tane was such a good dynamic too.
4. What was your least favorite main couple/s of the year? Jun & Jun, Top & Mew (their plot was ALL over the place and poorly written IMO)
5. What was your favorite side couple/s? Li Ming & Heart
6. What was your least favorite side couple/s? Ai Di and that guy who dicked him around but we were all supposed to forgive after he forcibly dragged Ai Di back into the mafia
7. What was your favorite character/s? Tane, Minoru, Wen
8. What was your least favorite character/s? Jun, Jun and the dick we were supposed to forgive in Kiseki
9. What was your favorite kiss or kisses this year? Ray sneaking a post-sex kiss onto Sand's cheek after he crashed the camping trip. Simple and it said so much.
10. What was your favorite love scene/s this year? GL - My Fairy Ghost; BL the way Bokura no Shokutaku turned secret hand touches into all the feels. Who needs obviously fake sex scenes, set it up right and they can just hold hands ;)
11. Which had your favorite story/screenwriting? Moonlight Chicken for story (some of the screenwriting could have been tighter); Bokura no Shokutaku
12. Which had the best cinematography for you? Moonlight Chicken, especially the Chinatown scenes. IFYLiTA
13. Which had the best music? Our Skyy: The Eclipse was a bin fire character-wise (how did the director and screenwriter FORGET Akk & Ay that quickly?) but the OST is good (Khaotung-First Your World, My World).
Moonlight Chicken's use of music really works for me.
14. Which made you cry the most? Moonlight Chicken & He's Coming For Me
15. Which made you laugh the most? He's Coming to Me
16. Name a memorable scene from this year? The midnight walk through Chinatown in Pattaya City in the 1st episode of Moonlight Chicken.
But also the genius of P'Aof in introducing MarkPakin/Fourth/Khaotung in a rapid fire crescendo, and then when First finally appears it's like 10 seconds of him looking pained at the VERY end of an episode. boom Boom BOOM ----- minor nuclear explosion :)
But also the big argument scenes from Alan; Li Ming & Heart waking up in the morning and choosing cuteness; ok I'll stop now :)
17. Name a “WTF” moment that stood out to you? A lot of Kiseki: Dear to Me - it's a long list: older mafia underling gives some token resistance re starting something with the barely legal kid he calls Kiddo, showing he understands how dodgy that is and then dives right in; not even bothering to think about the risks his criminal family will bring to said Kiddo; (fake) amnesia, (not fake) short term memory loss, time jump for prison cause the kid was coerced by the mafia to take the blame for a murder he didn't commit, another young man who gets free from the mafia but is carried back in literally kicking and screaming but it's all fantastic because the man who dicked him around for years finally decided to kiss him. Like seriously? This is a love story?
18. Name a show/s that seemingly everyone loved that you just couldn’t get into? Kiseki: Dear to Me. It's never been clearer that I'll always be an outsider here.
19. Name a show/s that you thought would be bad but it ended up surprisingly being good and vice versa? Went in with low expectations of Only Friends despite the quality of the cast and liked more of it than I expected. Those plots though, veering from trashy to wholesome to downright sappy. Five couples plus everyone else and much of the 2nd half felt like they were just making shit up to get to 12 episodes. How was that even possible?
20. Name a hidden gem or underrated show/s that you loved? There are some short (less than an hour) GLs that are excellent. BL - Bokura no Shokutaku
Isn't it being on Netflix means it has an official international release?Mitzi Miao:
Oh, thanks - I totally missed that. It's even now on Netflix in my country. Wow, I'm so happy! (I herewith amend my award category to "Best BL with no official international release at the time I watched it".)

We all have different tastes and opinions - that's totally normal and fine! One of the things I especially like about this group is that we're all generally respectful of this.

When I found out it'll be on Netflix I just waited to watch it there. I wish there will be more BLs on Netflix.

Right, that's most important. I see people being really rude and mean in series' pages. Either they come to mock those who enjoy a series they think is bad or look down at people who dislike a series they do. I don't understand why anyone has to bring others into their critique or opinion about a series.

Yeah, that is one of the things I love most about this club. I can say some of the most unpopular things and not get attacked for it. I like that persons are more interested in the reasoning behind my opinion. Now that is a healthy club.
