@ChunMoRionnag @Simi_Tutu Thank you sooo much for the recs!!Sruthipriya mahesh:
I can totally see now why p43425 calls him the drama encylopedia, haha... what a list!
He is our "Wiki-ChunMo".
By the way, I love all ten of the BLs you list for Magnoliee at the bottom of p. 657. I can't say whether they'll all be to Magnoliee's tastes, but these are all definitely to my own tastes.
mj_babec358:
He won't be a big problem and won't do anything too serious, and as you probably already guessed, he will have a story and a backstory that makes you love him at least a bit more, so yeah, he gets a lot better!!
It's a Happy Ending!
It is cute but definitely not easy for emotional people like me. Because we have death, betrayal, homophobia, low-key SA, and bullying in the series, but yeah...
RE: JAZZ - TYSM! Yeah, I get it about the emotional stuff. I'm really liking it even with the difficult underlying emotional issues, partly cuz it's also got plenty of lighter moments too. And the bully got kissed. That's when I knew there must be more to the story. And I felt less worry. Do Yoon is a cutie too. My eyes are on him whenever he's on, and his bluish hair. I love it.
Yet another reason to avoid the comments under dramas. Instead, read the reviews on MDLChun Mo Rionnag:
Ditto this. I never read MDL comments, and even the MDL reviews are of mixed usefulness because of: (1) reviews from the first episode or two before dropping (why aren't these purged after the series finishes release?), and (2) reviews that focus too much on what's wrong and all the "warnings" and "triggers" (which rarely trigger me, or are sometimes things I even like) rather than what's good about the BL. I'm usually most interested in whether it's enjoyable, whether the protagonists are engaging, and whether it's a nice love story.
I see this series got a rating slightly lower than Middleman's Love. Hehe. Sounds like both were bombs, going by popular opinion.American Fan:
("this series" = "Playboyy") I actually enjoyed both, even though both were very flawed, and I myself gave them below-average ratings. But that's not what I want to say ...
In the case of "Middleman's Love", the first two episodes were indeed awful, but it got much better, especially Episodes 7 (for Gus/Tong fans) and 8 (for Tutor/Yim fans) of the uncut version (!). Unless somebody watched the uncut version to the end, their MDL rating doesn't mean much to me - and I suspected that this applies to a minority of the MDL ratings. So point #1: MDL ratings may be skewed by people that rate the first episode or two, then drop the series.
I've also seen MDL ratings (e.g. for "Hit Bite Love") which I suspect have a lot to do with moral disapproval (very young actors in a steamy BL with taboo themes). Not that "Hit Bite Love" isn't very flawed, but I think that this is an added factor in its terrible average MDL rating. This could, to some extent, also be the case with "Playboyy". So point #2: MDL ratings may be skewed by factors like moral disapproval or "triggers" that usually aren't relevant to me. (PS: Not sayin' I don't have morals, but they're my own, not someone else's.)

Same, Doyoon is definitely my favorite character😍
The difficulty is what made the whole thing even better for me tbh!!
@RiqueXinw I actually started Playboyy a few weeks back and stopped after the first 10 mins but it’s still on my PTW list
After seeing ur rant maybe I should just not watch it at all?
Simi_Tutu:
Would anyone be interested in bringing back this Challenge from 2 years ago? It looks like it could be fun
Ooh yes that would be really fun!
Day 1: Love In The Air
Day 2: omg there’s too many to choose but maybe… Star In My Mind

Opinions on "Playboyy" vary widely. BL Watcher, who tends to be a tough grader, gave it a surprisingly positive review ("B minus"). While I frequently disagree with BL Watcher, especially on overall ratings, his reviews are serious, thoughtful and often quite insightful. Once I read the text of his "Playboyy" review, I was able to better understand the rationale for the rating, even if I still didn't entirely agree.
My own opinion: Deeply flawed but still entertaining, and not only because of its lurid appeal. There's also an engaging element of mystery, even if the ending was strange. I don't regret watching it.

Oh ok
I’ll keep it on my PTW list in case I come around to watching it sometime ig
Hmm. I've watched the first two episodes of "Love Is Like A Cat" - and (please don't shoot me!) so far I'm disappointed: with the story, with Mew Suppasit, and also with the way they handle the language issue.
Supposedly Uno (Mew) understands Korean perfectly but speaks almost none, and a whole bunch of Korean characters understand everything he says in Thai but answer entirely in Korean? Sorry, not plausible. I won't deduct for this because I don't want to be nit-picky if this ultimately becomes a good story, but this could have been handled much better, perhaps by Mew making a bit of effort to learn more lines in Korean. (Maybe this will change in future episides, but I doubt it.) That being said, dubbing (lip sync by a Korean voice actor) would have been even worse.
I'm excited by the growth in cross-border BLs, but I hope that future series (e.g. "Wuju Bakery") do a better job of handling the language issue.
The development trajectory of BL love stories can vary enormously. There are those that start with a bang (in the case of "Love By Chance" quite literally), and there are those that are all chase until the culmination near the end ("2together" comes to mind - thank goodness for "Still 2together" or there would have been hardly any actual relationship.) And as to love-at-first-sight beginnings, "Oxygen" is one of my faves.p43425:
There are also those that start with a relationship (e.g. "Cutie Pie"), or childhood friendships that are already quite intimate (e.g. "Don't Say No", "My Only 12%").
But an actual confession at or near the beginning? Hmm, trying to think ... "Takara-kun to Amagi-kun" comes to mind (such a cute confession, I melt just thinking about it). I'm sure others will come to mind as I think about this ...
Thank you so much p43425 for your answer and detailed descriptions. I could read it about for hours. :-) I love reading about tropes and themes and example dramas which stand for a certain trope etc.
I search for something next / parallel to watch, so maybe I will try "Oxygen" or "Love by Chance or "Takara..." if I find them somewhere to stream/ watch. ^^
My memory is working against me but these are the ones with both leads showing love and affection early on that I can remember :RiqueXinw:
Oxygen
Secret Crush on You
Until we meet again
Ai Long Nhai
Dark Blue and Moonlight (I am not sure about this one but I remember them having early intimate moments; some else may remember it better than me)
That is all I can remember right now.
Thank you so much RiqueXinw, too for your list! I love it. :D There is so much selection and so less time. :-)
Ah yes, "Until We Meet Again" is yet another category: The BLs that begin with a "red thread" connection.p43425:
What does a "red thread" connection mean? :-) I know "red flag" / "green flag". Does it have a similar meaning to "red flag" ?
@MagnolieeOnyxTheHedgehog:
Hey about the red outfit scene in Semantic Error, do u mean
Yeeessss. :D Exactly that one! :-) :-) :-) I loooove it! I think I will definately re-watch this sometime. I had to laugh so much and had a great time watching, sigh.
maybe I will try "Oxygen" or "Love by Chance or "Takara..." if I find them somewhere to stream/ watchMagnoliee:
I watched all three of these on Viki (50 € /year - very much worth it!).
What does a "red thread" connection mean?Magnoliee:
"Red threads" (nothing to do with "red flag") are used for various things in Asian cultures. In "Until We Meet Again" it has to do with reincarnation. If you watch the series, you'll learn all about it. (Warning: There is some very heavy tragedy, but actually the series is mostly sweet and feel-good. It's one of my all-time favourite BLs, even though I don't normally like heavy and tragic.)
@Magnoliee I am glad you like them :)Sruthipriya mahesh:
I am also most excited for "My Bias is Showing?!"
Great! :-) I hope I won't miss it!
Ohh, episode 1 actually got released yesterday!Sruthipriya mahesh:
Thanks for the information. Maybe I should take a look at it. To be honest I prefer it when all episodes are already there because otherwise I get a little impatient. :D
Ohh and thank you so much Sruthipriya mahesh for all your recommendations, I will read the synopis' of them. :-) I appreciate it!

point #2: MDL ratings may be skewed by factors like moral disapproval or "triggers"p43425:
These are good points and not ones I would have necessarily picked up on. In the case of Middleman's Love I'm guilty of the first point. I could barely get through the first 3 EPs and because of my disappointment after the long anticipated wait for this series only to watch what I saw as a hot mess, I gave it a low rating. I don't regret it.
With a series like Playboyy, I already know I have a low tolerance for graphic scenes (whether it's sex, violence, gore, bullying at it's worst - more extreme situations) so I won't start it in the first place, As an average human with many flaws, I'm sure morals, prejudices, or triggers might certainly influence my rating, consciously or not.
Thanks for sharing and giving me a fresh perspective behind the numbers. :-)
I'm usually most interested in whether it's enjoyable, whether the protagonists are engaging, and whether it's a nice love story.p43425:
Yes to this. The key to how enjoyable it is varies on what, if any, conditions or criteria the viewer might need for the series to fulfill that level of enjoyment. Of course it's different for each viewer.
He is our "Wiki-ChunMo".p43425:
That's cute :-)
"Red threads" (nothing to do with "red flag") are used for various things in Asian cultures. In "Until We Meet Again" it has to do with reincarnation.p43425:
Ahh okay, I see. :-) Thanks for your explanation. So it is something like a destiny and soulmate and connection across time (and space) - if I understood it right? So for example you can say that there is a red thread in "The Sign", too? I guess? :-)
I find this really interesting. Maybe it is another favorite trope/topic for me. Awww *being excited
I like the thought that things and encounters in life happen for a reason and/ or have a meaning.
