There’s no proper explanation for that in the drama, so I’m confused too. I’m also not happy with the whole situation  he didn’t kill him with his own hands just to protect the Xie family’s reputation, yet people are still cursing the Xie family. So in the end, he didn’t really achieve anything. That’s how I see it.

But yes, the romance part of the drama was really beautiful  two lonely souls finding each other.

People care about reputation. Cao Cao too, ML too. But, maybe he could clear Xie family's name after being the emperor. With power, re-opening the case would be possible. Maybe there's just not enough time to put that into the drama or the scripwriter think it's not that important since the political part is sub-plot.

Agree, the romance part and all the things leading to it are very well-done.

That’s exactly my point  both things could have been done: the king’s murder and proving his family’s innocence. But he didn’t do either. And I don’t think time was the issue; sometimes, even a bit of narration can make it work. Even the way the king died wasn’t mentioned, but it’s clear that the ML wasn’t the one who did it.  It’s true that they didn’t consider the political aspect important, which is why they left it as it was. Because of that, the story felt incomplete to me somehow.
