Synopsis:
The girl waits for the boy she loves, but when he finally returns, he comes with his wife. He doesn’t value the promise he made to her or the sacrifices she made for him. Later, when the girl marries the ML, the boy realizes his mistake and feels regret.

My Take:
It’s an old concept, but it’s presented in a fast-paced and mature way without unnecessary dragging or frustrating scenes. The female lead doesn’t take long to separate herself from the past and accept marriage with the ML. She doesn’t get stuck in lost love or revenge. Instead, she lets go of her past with dignity.

She’s not portrayed as a “strong” or overly smart woman, but she’s optimistic someone who accepts reality, lets things go, and cherishes what she has. The ML never allows the FL to be bullied. They make a good couple with mutual understanding.

The second male lead is foolish, but not toxic or stubborn. This is the first drama where I didn’t feel angry at the ex he was as likable as the ML and FL. Even after facing heartbreak, the 2nd ML doesn’t spiral into self-destruction or die. Instead, he values his life and finds new meaning in it, which makes the ending really satisfying.

The second male lead has psychological issues. Somewhere deep down, he believes that if his relationship with the female lead ever turns into love, it will eventually end just like his parents’ relationship did. Because of that, he has developed the mindset that staying “just friends” is safer.

Another reason is that he sees the female lead more like a healing object someone who gives him comfort and stability someone he doesn’t want to lose. So, he doesn’t truly love her. What he feels is more like obsession, the fear that something he considered “his” has gone to someone else.

There are psychological issues on the female lead’s mother’s side as well. She either wants to protect her daughter excessively or is projecting her own unresolved psychological problems onto her. She keeps the FL like a frog in a well, limiting her world. Even though the FL wants to fly freely, explore the world, and make new friends, her mother’s overprotectiveness and emotional instability prevent her from doing so. She imposes her own fears and way of thinking onto her daughter.

I’ve seen this male lead in standard dramas before, and I really like the way he performs. The couple has great chemistry and a healthy relationship overall. The drama is nicely done beautifully made and enjoyable to watch.

two things I didn't see in VD before: 

1. Characters speak a (weird) mix of Cantonese and Mandarin, e.g. the main characters speak Mandarin, characters address them/start talking to them  in Cantonese but switch midway in conversation. Why is that? What do you think? I cannot imagine that being broadly practiced in real life. What audience is it supposed to appeal to? HongKongers? Mainland Chinese? Location (is supposed to be, I cannot verify): Hong Kong 

2. there are (funny) making off scenes at the end
