Okay, I’ll admit something first — I usually avoid dramas that are super hyped. (It’s a thing. The more I hear about it, the more I avoid it… anyone else?? 😅)
But recently, I decided to randomly check out Love Between a Fairy and the Devil — my first xianxia drama — and... wait... it’s actually so good???

I wasn't expecting to enjoy it this much. The world-building, the pacing, the OST, Dylan Wang as the ML — all solid. But what really caught me off guard was Esther Yu.

Before watching, I’d seen clips of her floating around on TikTok and even joined in on some discussions where people found her voice a bit too cute or "over the top." So I kind of went in expecting to be mildly annoyed, not gonna lie 😅.

BUT — while watching the actual drama? It just worked. Her voice, while undeniably high-pitched, felt in character. It made sense for her playful and innocent side, and then when her character matured or turned serious? She delivered. I even found myself wondering, "Wait… since when can Esther Yu pull off cold, composed, and powerful so well??"

And when I stumbled upon the anime version of the story, I realized she must’ve studied the role really deeply. There were moments where her performance even matched or elevated the anime counterpart.

So now I’m sitting here like —
Did I underestimate her? 👀
Is she actually one of the most suited actresses for fantasy/xianxia roles?
Or was this just the perfect role at the perfect time?

What do you guys think? Has anyone else had a moment where you doubted an actor but ended up eating your words? 😅
And for those who’ve seen more of Esther’s work — is this her usual acting style, or did she really level up for this one?
