I’ve been noticing an interesting shift in C-dramas lately, and I’m curious to know if anyone else sees it too.
First, we had this wave of the “bad boy” type of male lead—and when I say bad boy, I don’t mean they’re actually bad guys 😂. I mean the portrayal: the attitude, confidence, rebellious energy, styling, and that slightly dangerous vibe. Think Speed and Love or Never-Ending Summer.
But now I feel like we’re moving into another trend: more sensual, mature vibes. And surprisingly, some of them are being done really well. We’re seeing more mature relationships, stronger chemistry, intimacy, attraction, and adult themes presented in a way that feels different from what we were used to seeing in C-dramas.
Dramas like The Early Spring, Leading Start, My Queen My Rules, and Purple Dahlia are giving me that feeling.
And it makes me wonder about something we always hear: “Chinese censorship.” Obviously censorship and broadcasting regulations are real, but seeing how much the tone of these dramas seems to be evolving makes me think censorship can't be the explanation for everything. Maybe some of what we considered “censorship” was also related to industry trends, platforms, creative choices, target audiences, and what producers believed viewers wanted at the time.
What do you guys think? Are C-dramas actually becoming more mature and sensual, or are we just seeing a temporary trend? 👀
