Lili_loves_LYN:
You state that he is “well and truly dead” but in the novel he actually does come back to life, reunites with LSS and their daughter, and then becomes the Demon King. Since you referenced the novel in your piece, why would you say he was “well and truly dead?”
I don't recall referencing any part of the novel in my original post - if there are similarities it would've been because the novel is the source? But the drama has really uplifted and changed the whole thing.
The Devil God (魔神, whether the original evil one, 2nd generation red-head or Tantai Jin the kind Devil God) is already a God (魔=devil + 神 = god) by virtue of his identity. This is different from the demon king (yao = 妖 or mo = 魔) concept you may see in so many other xianxia dramas.
Therefore, Tantai Jin is already a god when he overpowers the original devil god. Except that at this point everyone including LSS thinks it's the original evil Devil God inside him, when in fact it's the kind and self-sacrificing Tantai Jin pretending to be evil to push along his plan of killing himself with LSS' help = stop the world from getting destroyed.
When LSS becomes a god herself (costume change), she sees through Tantai Jin's motive, and knows he is actually a kind god behind all the pretenses (therefore all in white).
The ending can be interpreted as an open ending, depending on what conclusion you prefer, but based on earlier logic presented in the drama, Tantai Jin cannot be resurrected in full. It's like how part of Mingye's soul remained in the reverse scale for ten thousand years, but there's no way to resurrect him as a physical god / human.
TL;DR =A devil can also be a god at the same time (in CYJM's universe at least), Tantai Jin became a God before LSS.
Note: All my analysis is based on the 40 episodes and not taking into any extra "behind-the-scenes" or "fanservice audio".

Also - just want to add that the "18 episodes being cut" is simply a rumour that's spread far too wide - the original plan was 58 episodes at 45 minutes each - now it's 40 episodes at 55 minutes each. At most, they cut 3-4 episodes of content. I read the original script when it was first floated online, and the major cut portions include:
- Nian Baiyu developing a love line with the young disciple sister (daughter of Chief of the Moon Tribe, Jing Lan'an)
- Reworked the logic behind Di Mian's release
- Cut portions from Tantai Jin and Susu's travel back to Kingdom of Jing to defeat the nightmare demon and meet Ye Qingyu - one of Tantai Jin's costumes never appeared in the drama
- Cut portions from Cang Jiumin's cultivation journey
