Yes, I agree.  Even if it isn't exactly what I want to see, I think it is a good career move too.  A lot of his fans seem to think this is ... better produced? than last year's movie, with more known director and writer.  But I'm betting part of the reason why he got this role is last year's movie, where investors and producers could see he could fill theater seats and had the acting chops.  It's all steps in his career.

Yes!  For the right, good, big production, a solid supporting role would be fine.  Though I'm sure some fans would try to make it a billing issue.  :(

Costume dramas tend to be idol-style romance focus. There are more mediocre scripts/productions than good ones so you'll need to be selective. I don't know how many options/opportunities with movies/dramas he has despite his recent successes. It's awfully crowded and competitive and idol-land is a young person game.

This is true.  There's so many where it's clear the production company is just using it's own actors.  And I'm starting to reach the conclusion that despite his skills and success, Tan Jian Ci doesn't have quite the resources that actors at other agencies have.  But he does seem to have more choice and a career strategy, so I guess it works out.
