TCJ in real life doesn't scream ethereal aloof god. He is a very cute adorable funny pretty boy in real life. So I can understand the casting concern but the shows production team and his acting is next level. 

I am glad for him. I think YY would be a wooden block and even though XL was my favorite in the book, I was expecting a really terrible wooden background type XL. I was pleasantly surprised to see how TCJ captured both his aloofness and passion so well.

The height thing is part of it. Also, he's slighter and more compact in frame and his face is considered handsome but unconventional for Chinese beauty standards.

Yang Yang is basically China's ken doll, his looks are considered pretty much perfect and the ultimate standard. Xiao Zhan has probably the most powerful and devoted fandom that has probably ever existed in Chinese actor-idol history.
