I've always been a kdrama lover, but my roommate got me hooked on cdramas. I'll give some of the dramas I've watched and my notes on them to hopefully aide in recommending. (Also I'm putting spoilers just because I talk vaguely about some of the endings.)
The Double: 10/10 ABSOLUTELY LOVED. Probably my favorite so far. Love the revenge trope and what I call the "baddie-enabling" ML. Also there is nothing hotter than a brooding general covered in blood for his wifey.
Love Game in Eastern Fantasy: 9.5/10 I'm not a huge fan of isekai because it can feel cheesy and repetitive, but let me tell you I WAS SOBBING by the last three episodes. The way they ended it was perfect, in my opinion. It got a bit slow in the middle, but I think that was a bit of the point. I also love Esther Yu, anything she's in is gonna be iconic.
Love in the Clouds: 9/10 My most recent completion. SO GOOD. Was not expecting those plot twists, and the whole production felt really high budget. Twenty-Seven was ADORABLE and definitely stole the show. I wanted to squish him every time he came on screen.
Falling Into Your Smile: 9/10 My favorite contemporary drama I've watched. Loved the gamer concept, and I actually liked the gameplay cutscenes. And the chemistry, PEAK. High rewatch value for sure. Ming is my favorite character; having Merxat as a ML in more stuff is a need, not a want.
Legend of the Female General: 8.5/10 Loved the chemistry and the concept. Thought some of it was unrealistic, like there was no way nobody realized that He Ru Fei went from being tiny to like six foot. Fight choreography was great, and the cast was exceptional.
Some others I've watched and what I rated them (I'm a conservative rater):
Love Between Fairy and Devil: 8/10
Wait, My Youth: 9/10
Meteor Garden: 7.5/10
Perfect Match: 7/10
Exclusive Fairytale: 8.5/10
Love Like The Galaxy: mid-watch, 10/10 so far
Eternal Love is imo still the best xianxia romance drama ever. You should try it.
Go Ahead is a 10/10 modern drama focusing on family-like interaction with some romance added in the second half of the drama.
Love O2O is a must-watch. Fluffy romance between two online game husband and wife meet irl (but the male lead already knew female lead's identity).
Story of Kunning Palace is a costume drama with rebirth, redemption, and revenge plot.
You Are My Glory has the same web novel author and the same dreamy male lead as Love O2O, about unrequited love came true.
- Love of the Divine Tree - xianxia, ride or die couple
- When Destiny Brings the Demon - xianxia with a side of isekai, excellent chemistry, complex and interesting characters
- The Blossoming Love - xianxia, ride or die couple, unexpected twists
- Blossom - fantastic chemistry, good plot
- Jun Jiu Ling - swapped identity/revenge plot and general ML like The Double, intelligent FL and ML who respects that and worships the ground she walks upon
- Fated Hearts - general FL with amnesia like Legend of the Female General, enemies to lovers that makes sense, on fire chemistry
- Hidden Love - modern, sweet story, lovely chemistry and characters
All of these are more recent dramas I loved and rated a 10. I hope you find something you enjoy!
- Prisoner of Beauty — A gripping historical with political tension, slow-burn devotion, and that dark, calculated romance vibe similar to The Double. My fave of this year — I’m obsessed. Great communication between the leads, so satisfying to watch.
Blossom — Beautiful visuals, emotional depth, and a smart rebirth-and-fate storyline that stays engaging throughout.
Le Coup de Foudre — A tender, grounded modern romance with natural chemistry and a nostalgic, intimate feel. One of the softest, most genuine romances I’ve seen.
Reset — A tight, clever time-loop thriller that’s addictive, emotional, and brilliantly written.
These are all dramas I genuinely loved, and I think they match your taste for strong storytelling, great chemistry, and plots with real emotional payoff.
Based on your two 10s so far being The Double and Love Like the Galaxy, I'd say your next drama should be The Untamed. Like LLTG, it has abundant wire fu and an ML with secrets and layers. And like The Double, it has more than one character acting with hidden motives in pursuit of a secret long term goal. The Untamed satisfied my liking for romance with classy innuendo and what superficially seems to be a story of brotherhood among martial arts adepts. I haven't watched any dramas that fit squarely into the BL genre, probably because most of the BL dramas I've come across have lower budgets. And I'm a sucker for high end cinematography and pricey fight scenes. In these areas, as well as in writing quality, The Untamed succeeds.
In other news, since you like Falling Into Your Smile, I second Love O2O, and also will put a word in for both Go Go Squid! dramas. Yay neurospicy gamers!

I'm actually reading MDZS before I watch The Untamed! I'll get to it hopefully early 2026 when I finish all 5 volumes.
You liked Love Between Fairy and Devil. Ashes of Love is a sweeter and lighter look at deities. Like the other side of the coin.
You liked The Double (I loved it, too!). Blossom features two equally loving couples who have to outsmart court intrigues and conspiracies. Highly recommend. I gave it 9 stars, and I'm a very conservative rater. For another drama heavy on court intrigues and conspiracies, try Joy of Life. It's low on romance, but high on intelligence and personal growth. There are two seasons with a third promised. The Prisoner of Beauty was the antithesis of The Double, but equally good. Instead of a couple working together against their enemies, they had to work around one another, as they were sworn enemies forced into marriage to keep the peace between warring factions. I absolutely loved the quiet, thoughtful way the wife handled the situation. Well worth your time.
You liked Falling Into Your Smile. Hikaru no Go revolves around the board game Go. I was surprised at how well the show captured and kept my attention. It's totally different from anything else I've watched. It's a supernatural coming-of-age tale with competition at its core. Another contemporary romance/drama I'd recommend is Lighter & Princess. I don't generally care for contemporary romances, but this one hit right.
The Romance of Tiger and Rose plunks a screenwriter in the midst of her story. She has foreknowledge of what is to come and realizes the role she's playing is plotted to be killed off shortly. She has to scramble to change the outcome. Zhao Lu Si plays the lead, and I generally enjoy her dramas.
For something offbeat and not to everyone's taste, try the fantasy vampire drama Snowfall. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I've enjoyed vampire lore since my early days. Censorship meant no fangs or apparent blood sucking, and the storyline lacked greatly, also. However, it was one of my first Chinese Republican Era dramas, and I was mesmerized by the elegance and beauty of the fashion, cars, and interiors. The aesthetic made the show. The FL was charming, sweet, brave, and such a nice change from the silly, ineffectual girls that are often portrayed in Chinese dramas. The actress did an amazing job; I can't imagine anyone playing the role better. So, if you enjoy something different with a beautiful style and can overlook a disappointing storyline, give it a try. Nice OST, too.
For dramas I enjoyed but rated lower, try:
Blossoms in Adversity (very sweet relationship built on mutual respect and trust); Hidden Love (a sweet and charming modern romance); Legend of Fu Yao (it's overly long, but the intelligent characters made it worth watching); Reset (a time loop adventure; it's easy for a repetitive sequence to become boring, but this never did); The Day of Becoming You (a body swap drama); The Love You Give Me (an adorable child actor; the misunderstandings went on too long, but the cast was warm and relatable); The Spirealm (dangers in a virtual reality world; warning: the ending is ambiguous, but the drama compensated me for being thrilling, frightening, and inventive; note: there is a horror tag); and The Starry Love (a wuxia romcom); Who Rules the World (Zhao Lu Si is teamed up with Yang Yang).
