I’m looking for historical/wuxia/republican C-dramas with STRONG romantic chemistry and emotional intensity 😭

I don’t just want a “sweet” romance — I want the kind where:

  • the ML falls first and harder

  • there’s yearning, obsession, jealousy, emotional suffering

  • the heroine isn’t emotionally easy to win over

  • the romance feels earned

  • the tension lasts for a long time

  • the ML is protective, devoted, and slightly emotionally unwell over her 😭

I love romances with:

  • lingering eye contact

  • suppressed feelings

  • painful longing

  • chasing/pursuit

  • emotional sacrifice

  • a man who looks completely ruined by love

Please recommend dramas with:
✔ strong chemistry
✔ emotional damage
✔ mature romantic tension
✔ satisfying emotional payoff
✔ HAPPY ending please 😭

Some dramas that gave me this feeling:

  • Story of Kunning Palace

  • Prisoner of Beauty

  • Ashes of Love

  • Love Like the Galaxy

  • The Double

I’ve also realized I don’t enjoy romances where the FL falls too easily or where the chemistry feels too soft/fluffy from the start. I prefer slow-burn romances where the emotional walls, tension, and longing make the payoff feel worth it.

Open to historical, wuxia, xianxia, or republican dramas 🙏

Under the Moonlight fits perfectly (opinions vary on chemistry but I thought it was excellent).

I’ve seen Love and Redemption actually, but I ended up dropping it because I started feeling like the FL was a little too attached/all over the ML too early for my taste 🫢 I tend to enjoy romances where the emotional walls and tension last longer before the payoff. Did you feel that way too at the beginning, or does the dynamic genuinely improve later on? 👀 I’m wondering if I dropped it too soon. I haven’t watched Love in Between, Lost Track of Time, or The Legends yet though, so I’ll definitely check those out. Thanks for the recs 🤍

I thought the opposite actually...ML suffers and sacrifices for ages and FL can't feel emotions/love and doubts everything he does until toward the end of the drama, so it was a very, very slowburn for me. But I am very much a fastburn fan so what seems slow to me probably isn't slow at all to most people, haha. I hope you find something you enjoy among the rest, though!
