I get what you mean but as a person who reads many reviews before starting a title is essential cause the first thing I see before even reading the title is the rating.
Thank you for giving your view.
When you say "the first thing I see before even reading the title is the rating", you refer to the rating displayed on the title page, right? As far as I know, the ratings in reviews don't actually count towards the average rating displayed on the title page, so it's only relevant for the specific review, if at all. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
I still think it's not a good idea to force reviewers to give a star rating. Honest people like me would not post their thoughts, which might have helped others who don't look as much at ratings as you do. Especially with films and dramas which have a very low number of reviews or sometimes none at all, I'd like to write something for those.
In the worst case, a reviewer would just choose an arbitrary number, just to be able to post their thoughts. What do you think, would that rating still be reliable?
Also, reading other people's thoughts on how they rate, it's obviously a very subjective thing. Some don't ever rate below 5.5 while for others, 7.5 is high praise. So, what does a 6.5 mean? Is the drama of average quality, bad or quite good? Numbers alone don't mean a lot.
If it's a voluntary possibilitiy, then reviewers could still give ratings in their reviews if they wanted to and leave it if they didn't, mabe even just rate some categories.
Personally, I would probably choose to give a rating most of the time, but if I had the option to not do it, I could write reviews for those where I am not able to decide on a number -- how can I assign a single numerical value to the many different, sometimes contradictory, rational thoughts and emotions?

Then the reader would get to choose whether they want to read a positive or negative and how much.
I would love an option to sort reviews by rating, like a lot of other sites do. Reviews without a rating could just be pushed to the end then, regardless of whether it's sorted lowest to highest rating or vice versa.

POFActory:
As for the detailed rating, I personally like it since it helps me decide the right rating that I should give even if I'm not going to write a review.
You could always make up your own categories, give a rating for each and calculate the average rating yourself.
