Age cap on C-dramas

Seriously, we are going to lose a lot of good actors.

This is just a rumor (and it would be incredibly foolish and stupid). What matters is still "being young, handsome, and talented." Mature youth has such a special flavor (and Liu Xue Yi is a mature young man, but he exudes innocence too), and these idiots keep spouting such nonsense.

 mparthur:

What's the title of the drama below?

"The princess gambit"

I hope it is a rumour.  TBH, young actors are rubbish too.

 eliteles1:

I also ignore "minor flaws in the dramas" because these directors were wise enough to choose Liu Xue Yi. (How can this "male god," the most handsome I've ever seen, and so talented, be left without a drama??? And some complain and stop watching the drama for "minor reasons." As if he had a choice, but (all) the dramas with him are interesting. Yes, it could be better, it could (but never complain about one of his dramas to the point of leaving the drama). Every drama is a victory.

He should consider opening his own production company.

what does his name, Liu Xue Yi, mean?

Liu is the surname of the Han Dynasty Imperial family
Xue - snow
Yi -great?

Hahaha

I'm talking about the one they call old because he's 35 (he's young, but mature). He's young, that's what I mean. (For them, actors only need to be those who look like teenagers. Which is a shame).

Xue (I know it's snow) In Chinese, "Yi" (义/義) can have several meanings, but generally refers to justice, righteousness, morality, or duty. It can also mean intention, idea, or meaning depending on the context. In the context of Chinese philosophy, Yi is one of the five essential Confucian virtues, representing moral rectitude and equity. (source: internet). Liu = In Chinese, "Liu" (刘) is a very common surname, one of the most popular in China. It doesn't have an intrinsic meaning like "king" or "warrior," but it is a family name with significant historical and cultural roots. The character 刘 (Liu) is used for both surnames and given names, but it is most commonly used as a surname. (source: internet)

Just finished this and I know a lot of you have negative opinions about this drama but I loved it. Let’s just say that I loved it because of LXY and he delivered, as always. Every character he’s portrayed, he does it brilliantly. He has the best chemistry with any leads. He can be talking to a bookshelf and I will be watching with my mouth wide open. Lol. I do admit though that there were quite a few scenes that could have been better, but who am I to say as I am not a director, nor a writer. All the main leads did their jobs to the best of their abilities. The only thing I would have to say is that I hope that the FL picks up some acting tips from her lead-costar. Other than that,
I suggest you take the time and watch it for yourself instead of taking other people’s word for it. Cheers.

Episode 27.  SJY's facial expression whn he heard MWX thanked him for saving him.  That brief moment really defines LXY as a skilled actor.   It's very hard to convey such message by a facial expression.  He basically felt as if he wanted to embrace his cousin brother and tell him who he was but was unable to do so.  Th inner struggle really hit the audience.

The FL killed the drama, TBH.

Nice name.  At least, my interpretation is correct.

The Liu character has the word, Wen, which could be interpreted as cultured?

What's his nickname given by his fan?  The Chinese girls like giving pet names to their favourite actors.

I can only think of something that sounds silly such as Mighty Snow.  Hahaha.  Or, the Great Snow.

I beg to differ from most of you. I watch this drama primarily to see how they write the villains. Princess's Gambit gave me more satisfaction than other popular dramas. In The Double, Princess Wan Ning is just murdered, Shen Yu Rong commits suicide, and the evil mother goes mad. Even in Blossom, the Empress is just demoted and exiled, the prince is imprisoned, and the evil uncle of FL dies "righteously" to protect his patron. Those are not fair ends.

In PG, we get a full spectrum of villain types: an impulsive short-headed prince (Wugou), a calculative yet loyal one (Huaijin), an evil and corrupt father (Meng family head), a kind-hearted but turned cold and pragmatic daughter (Meng Zhenzhen), a smart and elegant but unhinged prince (Wuyin), and a powerful, cold blood, and vengeful queen (Empress Lv). What makes them compelling is that we generally understand how they became villains. Some were driven by greed, power, and corrupted personalities, while others turned dark out of a desire to protect the people/ family they love.

It is also a good thing to see how they end up working together as their interests intersect. Their alliance feels inevitable. We know what they want, how they are thinking and feeling, and how they are scheming. Also, how all of them met their demise is so satisfying. Wugou is the victim of his stupidity (after repeated reminders by Huaijin), Huaijin is the victim of blind loyalty to a wrong master, the Meng family head is forced to kill himself in prison, like what he did to Huaijin, and Wuyin is dead out of love he craves. Meng Zhenzhen got a pardon due to her last merit, and it resonates with her genuine care for fellow women and children in her family. And, Empress Lv is died in agony.

For me, the villains’ stories form a complete circle, delivering clear moral consequences. There’s a satisfaction in seeing them punished in the very ways they once wronged others. They reap what they sowed.

The last one. We also got a taste of a "pseudo" villain, the treacherous chancellor with gray morality, capable of ruthless actions. He’s far from the conventional, always-righteous hero. Raised in a scholarly household, trained in martial arts, and having a career in politics (as Qi's emperor political pawn), his personality transformed as he grappled with the realities of his world. What a complex and layered main character.

Loved your perspective & I totally agree that a villain without depth or main leads who don’t undergo a growth arc shaped by moral dilemma, water down the show. In that sense, this drama managed to flesh out strong characters & weave intriguing plots connecting them. The costumes, cinematography & the OST are brilliant & can be an example worth following for future dramas. But the editing could have been a LOT better. The narrative felt like a ‘buffering live soccer match’ where we see the start & the goal scoring moment but can’t feel excited as we missed the juicy part of ‘assists, defence & offence’.

The novel readers could connect the dots & resonate with the characters but in the drama we were robbed of that joy in more than one instance due to lacklustre editing & screenplay. Especially the 3rd Prince arc with the FL’s memory loss. This could’ve been an angst filled love & hate intertwined battle of wits scenario, testing loyalties but they let it crumble down to a plain old ‘ML turns soft & FL an indifferent damsel in distress’ plot. Many characters were left unexplored like Concubine Lan, SZY’s concubines, the Qin family/ 2nd Prince, Qian Mo Chen. & so on. They amplified the 3rd Prince arc & the poisoning plot so much that it overshadowed the tense 1st half & left little room for other characters to shine.

Yes. I agree. The editing should have been better.

Absolutely agreed! It’s rare in C dramas that villains are written in such a satisfying way and that their character traits/stories become their downfall. What a wasted potential though as I found the rest of the story lacking and not well written. Also the romance was unsatisfying imo, and it was not LXY‘s fault. He definitely delivered.

I didn't understand this message I just received: Mainly in this part (official sources) of photos.
This is the first time I've heard this: official photo sources??? If it's only official sources that are posted here for every drama (there will be almost no photos at all, because the "official photos" are very few and often uninteresting (which wouldn't attract viewership to the drama).
I can agree with the other points, but this point?????? ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

Hello!

I'd like to ask you to make sure that the photos you upload to galleries are from official sources and directly related to the title. Unofficial pictures, user-taken screenshots, unrelated magazine-shoots or fan-taken pictures from the set are not allowed. You should also make sure you're not uploading duplicates; you've uploaded a lot of those. I have needed to delete over a 1000 photos from you by now, and the count keeps increasing. Please try and upload only relevant photo material.

Thank you!

LXY is so handsome: a pair of dimples on his both cheeks and a dimple on his chin! OMG. Would love to see his parents if he takes after the mom or the dad.

One issue with LXY in C-costume dramas is the wig. He looks odd with the wig he wears as well as the makeup. He looks so thin and pale with his makeup and the wig doesn't help in this drama.

I'd like to see him in a better wig. That's my next wish in his next drama, Against the Current.

    Hahaha.

LXY is an underrated actor.

The first time I saw his acting in Destined, OMG!  He stole the show from the ML and other actors.
I kept saying this villain was so handsome. I continued watching the drama because of LXY.

Since then, I have been searching and watching his dramas.

I simply can't wait for his next drama, Against the Current.
