Wuxia (武俠), meaning "martial heroes," is a Chinese genre of fiction, film, and television focusing on wandering martial artists in ancient China who adhere to a strict code of chivalry (xia), fighting for justice and protecting the weak. These stories feature stylized martial arts, gravity-defying stunts, and often revolve around the jianghu, a subculture of warriors, outlaws, and masters.
Wuxia vs. Xianxia
Wuxia is low fantasy focused on human martial arts, whereas Xianxia (immortal heroes) is high fantasy featuring magic, gods, demons, and immortal cultivation.
