Good angsty dramas

I usually try to stay away from melodramas, but there are some exceptions. This list is for dramas filled with anguish, heartbreaks, tears, misunderstandings, self-sacrifice, love triangles and pining that I kinda enjoyed.

Arranged according to my personal enjoyment. Although, if I was not invested in/or enjoying the angst in a drama, I would have been unable to finish it.

Do I even need to explain? I think every fan of the drama agrees that this was one angst-filled road for Wei Ying...

Thank you, Lan Zhan, for being there for him.

He was always looking forward, believing that she would always follow.

He would always be her priority, but she would never be his.

A surprisingly dark drama, with amazing acting and storyline. I found the drama to be quite bittersweet (although there was a happy ending). The audience might disagree, but I found the relationship very unequal emotionally. I wanted him to give more than he did. The whole relationship rested on the FL's shoulders.

  • Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo

    Korean Drama - 2016, 20 episodes

This one does not need any explanation. I think every watcher used at least two boxes of tissues to wipe away the snot after ugly crying...

  • Love and Destiny

    5. Love and Destiny

    Chinese Drama - 2019, 60 episodes

Her wish was to become his equal, his safe haven, and greatest supporter.

A melancholic, calm drama with exceptional character development and love story. You could see how the FL's early infatuation/admiration gradually developed into a deep, strong love. The ML was like an unbreakable wall, sheltering her from the worst storm. Although, his sometimes overbearingly deep love could make him so protective that he forgot to treat her as his equal.

In the end, the FL showed exactly why she was the ML's one and only. Both of them would always choose the world, even if it meant loosing each other.

  • Eternal Love

    6. Eternal Love

    Chinese Drama - 2017, 58 episodes

This is kind of like a... realistic romance? Or as realistic as you can call a romance occurring in the Immortal Realm, and takes three lifetimes to bear fruit.

It's about two individuals perfectly suited for each other meeting and falling in love, traversing a road filled with godly hardships and adversities. Although, I don't really understand how the ML fell in love with the FL in the Mortal Realm. I can only guess that he found her clumsy and clueless self endearing. Perhaps the idea was to show the audience that he fell in love with her flaws.

Only when she ascended back to a goddess did I discover their suitability for each other.

Oh, the mortal FL also goes through hell and back.

(It took me 5 tries to watch this over halfway through. I hope I'm able to finish it this time.)

He would always choose the world, but she only lived for him.

A sad, mature romance, with great acting, chemistry and storyline . However, due to poor editing I cannot give a higher score than 8. Especially in the latter half the editing made the plot inconsistent, some scenes lost their logic and too many plotholes came forth.

But, I still enjoyed it and recommend everyone to give it a try.

  • Moonlight Mystique

    9. Moonlight Mystique

    Chinese Drama - 2025, 40 episodes

    8.5

In the darkest of night, when the moon is tired, the stars will shine the brightest.

A brutal road of sacrifice, so many people died, but the moon and stars refused to be dimmed. This drama probably had the most intelligent and selfless FL ever. When everything was dark she shined the most, just like the stars during a new moon.

On the other hand, the ML was like the moon, lighting up the path for the world. However, struggling alone for so long made him tired, causing his light to flicker and vane, but it would always light up the path and shine hope to the future when needed. Just like the full moon.

The FL and ML was each others greatest strength and hope. When either of them was tired, they would always support each other until they found the strength to shine again.

  • Eternal Love of Dream

    10. Eternal Love of Dream

    Chinese Drama - 2020, 56 episodes

    7.5

She brought the color into his world and made his stagnated days move again.

That was a brutal road of unrequited love. I didn't know if I should applaud the persistence and perseverance of the FL, or if I should disapprove her lack of dignity and pride when chasing the ML. However, we were rewarded in the end, as this drama showcases a textbook example of "she fell first, but he fell harder".

Although, I had hoped that she would have matured more throughout her numerous trials, but she stayed quite childish till the end...
