Mood Indigo was presented as a series, but it feels like a film, and it certainly does NOT feel like a BOYS LOVE drama. So, here it is right where it belongs, at #10 on my Best Gay-Themed Feature Films list.

  • Homo phobia

    13. Homo phobia

    Korean Movie - 2017

    9.5

This movie will offend the easily-offended and bore the boring. This film is not for them.

Kim Yeong Taek, the ML, gives a performance that is remarkable in every way. Funny, soulful, tender, sexy, sensitive, jerk-ish, conflicted, sad, happy, hopeful, angry, crazy, you name it, this guy plays it and well. He also wears tight blue jeans as few can do. :P

All four supporting male actors are excellent. The college guy and the sergeant nearly steal the show. Then there is the sergeant's girlfriend who shows up in the latter half and almost steals the show from them. However, KYT's characterization and acting are more than strong enough to withstand the competition

If you have a sense of humor, don't mind being challenged, enjoy good acting, aren't a prude, are open to quirky flicks that take some time to appreciate/understand; and can relax and let something you didn't get or like at first grow on you, then this is for YOU.

This might have received a 10/10 rating from me except for the last 20 minutes, which are a disaster. To that point, this film features stellar plot/script/direction/acting/cinematography. But the director decided to blow all that up with an incoherent, drawn-out ending. As an added insult, the older main characters bear zero resemblance to their younger selves.

The ending is not as horrendously soul-murdering as the last ten minutes of the Thai film "The Love of Siam," however. Whereas that one is misleading/deceptive and aggressively, deliberately cruel, the ending of YNEH is merely lame. I putters out with a barely audible "poof."

In rating and remembering YNEH, I pretend it ends with 20 minutes left on its running time. But the fact that it forces me to play that mind game with myself takes two stars off, from 10/10 to 8/10.
