POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT: I am starting to add comments in my lists in lieu of reviews/notes so beware of the potential spoilers. I will try to keep them to a minimum because I get it.  

But that doesn't necessarily mean no love rivals, it just means those rivals were either never really competition or they left the race very early on. The ML/FL only had eyes for each other.  May also only have a slight romance.
